Cabin in The Woods - April 13th - Best horror film in years?

Damn. Fran kranz is killing me in this.

Ok, I have a question.
does each country have a different subset of monsters? I recognized a few of them, but others seemed foreign to me, like the masked people. I'm kinda confused as to how that aspect works.

The Masked People were a play on torture porn.

The way they are elegantly lighting people on fire while the monitors around them show mass carnage, that's played for laughs.

They weren't torture porn, that was the zombies and also the doctor. The masked people were a direct homage to The Strangers.

I've seen this movie about 12 times now. It gets better every time.

My favorite characters.

Fucking agreed. So many LOL moments with them in the office.

im really curious what the dead ape is supposed to represent in argentina.

Is it an ape? I thought it had horns or something - been a while since I saw it.

Can't wait for next Tuesday though! Got the BluRay set preordered on Amazon since it dropped from like $35 to $19 the other day. Woop! Still pissed that there's no combo pack but if they ever rerelease it I'll gladly double dip.

Its furry like an ape. But it did have horns. I know there's no sequels planned, but I would love to see a side story series of the other failures that we didn't see play out.

They do have a sequel planned. Weather or not they ever make it, though, is another story.

Really? Is there a link for this?

I don't think there's anything about it online but they talk about it in two different sections of the Art Of book.

Basically, the Intern is the only one who survived, and he rules over all the unleashed monsters and gods. The sequel would cover how he would go about rebuilding the world.

I don't have the book on me right now, I think it's in my car, so I don't have the exact quotes. But that's the gist of what they talk about.

Edit: A quick Google search shows he's been talking about being open to doing a sequel as recently as August 18th, but none of the interviews go into the detail that the book does. The movie was a financial success from what I remember (made just shy of $66 Mil world-wide) and it got STELLAR reviews, but at the same time Joss is now Mr Marvel Cinematic Universe so who knows when the hell he'd ever get the chance to make CitW 2.

He was untouched, wasn't he? I don't think joss is attached to anything up until avengers 2, right? So he could probably crank out something before shooting begins.
does the book describe how they captured the various creatures? I would imagine with some being volatile(the boomer) and others just being fucking ridiculous, that would be fucking ridiculous.

I don't "get" this movie. I think it would have benefitted more if it was a serious horror film. I love the conspiracy/experiment stuff, but then they had to fuck it all up.

The CGI also looked like crap.

Sorry.

What don't you get exactly? Is there an aspect of the movie that you got caught on?

The definition of "what the fuck did I just watch?"

I didn't find it spectacular though. Other than the scenes with Richard Jenkins and evil guy from Billy Madison, I didn't find it funny. None of it was suspenseful either. It was entertaining, though, but I think it would be a stretch to call this a horror movie.

I watched it and enjoyed it. Not great, but not bad either, 7/10 IMO. One thing that bugged me though.

In the end, IMO it didn't really seem like the guy believed that the human race should be killed off and that these gods should take over again. Basically it seemed like his intent was to defend himself to the end until he couldn't escape death anymore. And that's what happened when the old gods came out to slaughter all of man kind. Maybe the ending just kind of irks me because these guys wouldn't sacrifice themselves to save the human race even though they couldn't save themselves anyways. But that's how I took it.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
tucker and dale absolutely rulez.

one of my favorites. i loved every second of that.

i recently rewatched cabin in the woods and liked it way more this time around. going in with a more complete idea of the movie benefits the viewer - you can really pick up on all the little fun tidbits in the first half.

I just saw it and loved it. Re your comment above I took it as:

A good take on american ideals in general. Willing to struggle against injustice for the right to life even if it only is for another 5 minutes. Also a subtle America fuck ya in the sense that the individuals right to life (liberty pursuit of happiness) trumps fascist assholes willing to kill you off "for the greater good". The characters I didn't see as not being willing to sacrifice ... They just weren't willing to sacrifice for a cruel and uncaring government that was willing to murder its own citizens.

I mean that in a good way I suppose. I love how crazy this movie was and how it was thinly veined in a campy B rated horror trope.

The movie itself as far as movies go wasn't really that great. But where it excelled was originality. My wife for example, HATES horror.. but I made her sit through this. About half way through it clicked with her that this was something new and as it unwound further she was glued lol. The campyness of it all was so awesome as a movie goer, I just feel like I'm never treated to pure entertainment like this anymore.

It wasn't a great horror flick, it wasn't a great comedy.. it was a great piece of art that took me for a ride that I wasn't sure existed. More movies like this please! haha

I think it's the opposite. To me the film doesn't have an original bone in its body. From the message, to the concept, to the jokes. It had all been done before, just arranged differently. It was a melting pot of much better ideas, that had been executed much better already. These ideas are important for new generations of movie-goers, but they should be delivered in a coherent and contextual way.

Cabin in the Woods is referential and current, to the point of it becoming cliche in itself (nostalgia-gasm 80s references LOL, so good). It really jumped the shark when I recognised the Cenobite, it was getting too specific with referencing these horror cliches. It ended up like a long Treehouse of Horror episode from a recent Simpsons season.

Which brings me to your second point, that I agree with. For all of the ingredients the makers have thrown in, the final product is really quite flat and bland.

As opposed to what alternative movies, exactly ?

I also like how you cut the end off that quote to suit your own agenda. Bravo

I would be interested to see the extended universe on this,
would the UK be Hammer Horror / Frankenstein / Dracula, our old god would be Lovercaftian I assume...

Also, why don't the monster in-fight? why did they ignore some of the "human" monsters?

And what was your hand in the production of the movie? I don't have an agenda buddy, I'm quoting what is relevant to my point and expressing an opinion. It was not a great piece of art to me, and a quote isn't sacrosant, I'm replying to a specific phrase and that's allowed. It really is no different to your use of bold.

So, to answer your question:

Truman Show/Series 7 do mass-entertainment satire better
Wes Craven's New Nightmare and first two Screams do post-modern horror cliche baiting better
Evil Dead 2 does cabin humour horror better, Sam Raimi does horror comedy better
Pretty much all horror movies do horror better

It's a mash-up that doesn't gel, wrapped in a blanket of winky-wink, nudgy-nudges without the charm to pull them off convincingly.

So I just saw it for the first time last night.

Was the kicker and the reason we weren't supposed to know anything going in that we were supposed to go in thinking it was a 100% serious horror movie?

Then all the weird shit happens and all the black humor and the fact that the movie manufactures itself to be a horror movie and set the characters up in in all these planned horrible situations within the movie just like normal horror films do on the production level?

I dunno, I just thought there was be something incredible like a plot twist or something that would blow my mind...not just that it was actually a play on the horror genre as opposed to an actual horror movie.

Am I on the right track but based on all the "you'll love it"s I expected the wrong thing?

New nightmare was a complete mess.

Ok lol.

New Nightmare was disjointed and uneven sure, but it was experimental and fresh and exciting. Its ideas far surpass any problems it had with presentation or script, it's full of energy. It laid the groundwork for future deconstructions that polished the formula. 15 years later, and we're still seeing same-old.

Not even close. It is the second best movie in the franchise.

Nightmares 1, 3 and New form a pretty amazing trilogy.

Are you guys being serious? You actually liked new nightmare? That was one of the most boring "horror" films I've ever seen.

It was a nice change to the format. It was better than all the nonsense the other franchises rolled out. It may not be your cup of tea, but it was a refreshing take on the series.

I saw the ads for this and even though I generally love Whedon's work I thought "Eh."

Then I heard about a big twist and saw hints of what it might be and thought "Yeah, yeah,
none of it is real and it's just some government agency fucking with them, big deal."

Finally decided to watch it and was like "Oh shit I got this one ALL wrong." Such a fun little flick. Funny and knowing and just full of nice little touches. A nice homage to the horror movie genre.

I liked the film the first time I saw it, but it just doesn't hold up well upon a second viewing. it was just boring when you know what happens.

Ok so the DVD and Blu-Ray have lenticular covers that turn each section of the cabin into a glass box with a
different creature in it.

Why the fucking fuck would they spoil that on the cover of the movie?

Just got my Bluray copy and yeah, that's a dumb move.
Equally disturbing is the "from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer" banner. Unnecessary.

Saw this recently- it gets so fucking daft, and I love it for that.
THAT UNICORN STABBED A DUDE.
Best final act, especially who shows up towards the end.

I need to rewatch it again without people who fucking hated it.
