Did You Go To Prom?

I sold a lot of candy bars to pay for graduation dues, senior trip and prom so I thought I might as well go. Didn't really have the unforgettable experience but it was nice to see my friends all dressed up.

When I was leaving highschool age, US style proms were becoming popular in the UK. I didn't go. I missed a ton of school beforehand and it felt weird. Coupled with the fact I hated the place and every single person there.

I did. It is not the super amazing experience that some people say. Now the after prom party was where the fun was at.
My man. Prom is a nice excuse to see classmates dappered up outside of school but the after parties are where memories are made and destroyed.

Yeah sat around with my friends while we waited for it to be over so we could go on a class trip to play stuff like paint ball and run obstacle corsues. Though I'm sure the majority of my class were anticipating going out and partying in the woods somewhere, which seemed to be the number 1 extraculicar activity in my class.

Didn't go. I only attended high school there for two years and didn't really connect with anyone (this was out in the countryside so pretty much everyone was life-long friends and I felt like the new city guy no one knew outside of a handful of classmates).

No and I find it weird when people think there's some regret to be had in not going to a dance with awkward high schoolers that is relatively expensive for a person at those age. We just went to college parties for free instead.

Yup. Senior prom only. Seeing all your friends dressed up, eating awesome fancy food, dancing, riding in a limo...

Fingered my girlfriend in the limo, whilst conversing with other friends, and assuming none of them noticed.

Got a nice BJ at like 6 AM after the after party.

Rested the next day (Saturday).

Went to Cedar Point on Sunday.

Skipped school Monday and went to the zoo (it was the senior skip day).

Great weekend.

All 4 years I was in high school. My freshman and sophomore years I was invited by older girls.

I had fun but for different reasons each time.

Yes. Prom itself was fun but the memory of being asked is what I remember most fondly:

There was this really cute Japanese girl in my English class, and she was always falling asleep. I felt kinda bad for her because I'm a native English speaker and I could barely stay awake while we read through Shakespeare, so what hope did she have? Anyway, I was taking Japanese at the time so I spoke a little to her, which seemed to make her happy. My friends and I would sometimes call her over to sit by us and chat a little; she had a pretty thick accent but her English was good. Fast-forward near prom time, I was just coming out of art class when she walked up to me and asked, in her Japanese accent, "Will you go to prom with me?" I still smile when I think about it because it was the cutest thing. Of course I said yes.

She looked stunningly pretty on prom day. I was able to introduce myself to her dad in Japanese, which seemed to impress him. The dance itself was... a high school dance, no more or less fun than the rest. I really wanted to kiss her on the drive home, but she was super innocent so I was scared to make a move, worrying I'd ruin her night or something (I was a terrible overthinker). In hindsight she obviously had a thing for me and a kiss probably would have made her night (and mine). Oh well.

I never went to any formal or semi-formal dances at my school. Prom was no exception when it came up senior year.

I went to the amusement park with friends, then we came back to our part of the city to binge watched movies while eating pizza and wings. Good time.

It's really pretty crazy when people view it(or anything that goes on in High School rather) as some one in a lifetime opportunity. Just like- your life has barely even begun yet

Didn't bother with prom. My class didn't do much fundraising, so prom tickets were about $125. Considering the only thing prom had over homecoming was a chocolate fountain, I didn't see the need to spend that much.

Junior year was cancelled due a storm so after dinner we all just want back to the house we met at and hung out. When it was rescheduled my friends and I had a LAN party instead. Senior year I skipped.

Bitter much?

What?

Pretty much. The idea of it being 'life changing' seems mostly wrapped around the whole losing of virginity. But most I know lost it before prom, or after prom, but very few at prom. The only other characteristic of prom is dancing fancy for a night, but now that I'm older and can afford to do it whenever I want it just seems like a weird charade.

Yup, both Junior and Senior proms. They were alright. The Senior breakfast and picnic were a lot more fun though.

Well in my case it actually was a once in a lifetime opportunity, since my date moved back to Japan like the day after we graduated.

Went my junior year and senior year.

And then about five years later went with a couple of high school age friends.

The one after high school was much more fun. I knew who I was by then, or at least had a better understanding of who I was. Something I had no clue about in High School. For one thing I actually danced.

In high school I did for one dance. Told my date I loved her, and she said "love you like a brother" awkwardness ensued. Second one was me being nice to a friend. She hadn't gotten a date, but had gotten a dress. She died a few years ago actually. She was never healthy. She'd had heart problems since birth.

I don't think many were drunk at my first two. That last one though? Those teens liked to party. It definitely wasn't just the norm booze and pot either.

Nope. Went out with friends instead and we all had a blast together.

We decided to quickly drop by the prom afterparty for the hell of it, and...didn't look like we missed much. Isn't this supposed to be the "good part" of prom? Some people looked downright miserable.

Yep. My wife and I arrived late while everyone was eating and we couldn't find our seats so we just left and ate McDonald's and went back.

No. My parents went out of town that weekend and I hosted a poker game. We drank beer, smoked cigars, and played cards all night. A couple guys stopped by after the dance and joined us when their "dates" bailed on them.

I went 3 years but skipped senior year cause I didn't care anymore. In my school we were allowed to go starting freshman year.

I mean yeah. You'll have plenty of opportunities to have this kind of fun and lose your virginity in your life(if that didn't happen in high school.)

I dunno. I just feel like Prom being like "the event" is kind of shitty. Theres gotta be more fun things to do as a class to cap off high school

How many proms are there in the US?

We have only one*, when you're close to finishing HS and that's it.

*One formal and one next week in the clubs.

Went to senior prom. Went stag, was bored out of my mind; and being I wasn't part of any group renting out cabins in the Poconos and wasn't invited to any after-parties, I just went home afterwards.

I didn't go to Junior prom, but I went to Senior with my then-girlfriend. It was on the Hornblower, went out and sailed loops around San Diego harbor, which was really cool. We graduated in 007 so the theme was James Bond, there was a casino running in one of the lower decks of the ship. I don't think I'd call it life changing, but it was definitely a memorable, fun night!

Yes. I was rejected first by this christian girl who previously became distant because it turned out she didn't like my rant about global warming fucking up our planet.
Later I asked a friend from an entirely different school but in a relatively pathetic way while our moms bumped into each other and I had nothing to lose by asking her right then and there.
She went on to attend Yale as an undergrad and went to law school at Cornell, and I continued to be a total loser. She didn't deserve me as a date needless to say. Good times.

we only have one as well.

edit: *reads thread* well I stand corrected.

Idk, I didn't even finish HS, got a GED and went straight to college instead.

I went to both. My crowd in high school were the "cool kids" in band (or so I've been told, years later) so we went to the prom ironically to chill and people watch. It was alright, people are nuts

Yes, twice. I feel it was a waste of money and wish I didn't give into pressure to go (Especially the second time). Doubly hurt since I mostly got pressured into going by my family, and they later berated me for being bad with my money and spending so much on it. It was a miserable night, sober dancing with awful food, and a girl who was not a good fit for me.

I went but I wasn’t planning to. I was only at that high school for a little over a year due to moving so I didn’t really think prom would be in the cards for me. I eventually got asked a few weeks before to go by a girl in my programming class, and I didn’t really have a reason to refuse. Prom itself was okay, after prom was much better.

I thought about it, but I was broke. I started to work things out, and the lead teacher in charge of the seniors thought about sponsoring my ticket, but instead thought "wait, he didn't raise any money for the class, fuck him." So I didn't go. Like I have money for a car and gas to run around for miles living in the middle of nowhere, great

We don't have proms in the Netherlands. High schools do have an end-of-the-school-year party but the biggest difference (from the US model) is that you don't ask someone out for it.
Everyone goes there 'solo' like you'd go to a regular party.

So yeah I went all 6 years. Got fucking wasted the last 4 years. Good times. Remember getting kicked out of the ladies room by a teacher while I was kissing a girl there.
