Well everyone seems to hate Gawker for what they do, so there you go, America: you're about to get a version that's a toe-the-line, cookie-cutter, generic news site just like all the rest of Ziff-Davis' sites. Congratulations.
Whatever shall we do without our leaked videos of aged wrestlers fucking and gay businessmen being thrown out of the closet for "news"?

Thanks, Obama!

I just find it hilarious that this entire spiel that could shake up the game journalism industry is centered around fucking Hulk Hogan.

If the opposite of generic is abetting blackmail by outing non-public figures as gay for no reason, then by all means, bring in the cookie cutters.

Hard to believe people wanna tapdance on Kotaku's grave because they reported that sequels to video games were coming out before an official press release.

I don't think people are upset about Kotaku doing that, but it's a venture hardly worth saving. Knowing about various game details earlier than planned doesn't really help anything and it only has a market because we, like everyone else on the internet, are completely addicted to a constant stream of information about everything. So, it doesn't make for a good guilt-trip (the internet will provide an endless amount of useless information with or without Kotaku).

As much as I like Patrick and Jason, I feel like people are somehow looking at Kotaku through massive rose tinted glasses as though it were a bastion of gaming journalism, when in fact the majority of its content tends to be sponsored posts or farmed from reddit, neogaf, deviantart,

For every thought provoking article Patrick posts, for every Assassins Creed leak, there are countless other garbage articles.

As I said earlier this is really shitty news, but saw this on Twitter and, well

I remember this interview. Poor Bret Hart.
Kotaku will be fine even if its at Ziff. Hope everyone else lands on their feet quickly after this.

Nigga, Hogan slammed Andre in front of 380 million people in the Superoregano Dome brother. Hogan ruined Sting's 97 "I'm Goku arriving against Freeza" comeback. Nigga, Hogan turned the fans on The Great One.

Don't doubt him.

More "garbage articles" does not give you less thought provoking articles.

As long as he buries Kotaku, I am fine with it... I really dislike that site.

I get the feeling this was an opinion you thought was going to be more popular.

I'm absolutely certain they'll just move ownership and carry on as normal. Would be a loss - they've broken plenty of big stories.

Please. I'm not going to say everything the Gawker site did was great journalism, but between them, Kotaku, Deadspin, io9 and various other sites, they've had some solid reporting over the years. Even the gotcha articles have often served to expose hypocrisy and bad behavior by public figures, even where Peter Thiel is concerned when it comes to the other stuff about him they've reported. He's not some kind of moral crusader here: this was purely for his own selfish interests and bruised ego.

They went over the line a few times. That's a good reason for them to be punished. It's not a good reason for the entire company to be put in jeopardy.

Gawker's whole business model is built around going over the line, on meaningless privacy violation and irresponsible rumor mongering. They have gone over the the line HUNDREDS of times, it is not an isolated or rare occurrence.

This is hefty downplaying. Flouting a court order is not "going over the line a few times", it's breaking the law. It is quite an excellent reason to place the whole venture in jeopardy.

I am sure that Scoops and Schrier can both find somewhere to land on their feet if worst comes to worst. Two of the best journalists in the industry.

Exactly.

I don't mind Kotaku, and glad they will seemingly be sticking around for the most part in the same form. Used to be my main go to site back in the day when it was invite only to post, and Brian Ashcraft invited me. When they opened it up to anyone can post, Witzbold and I were the two final choices for main moderation.

I stopped visiting to post after I left for contract work that took me away from gaming for a few years, and when I came back it changed completely with account systems, Crecente & McWhertor had left, and it just was not the same as far as 'community'.

Gawker CEO on the other hand, he can get fucked. Imposing on people's privacy with the guise of 'journalism' is some bullshit self serving crusade.
I remember those days well. Crecente ran a tight ship there and then Spoony came along took over and Witzbold went insane and got banned.

Must say their current community at Polygon is not bad at all.

After the whole Kotaku vs Vanillaware juvenile developer article I have zero sympathy for them because they are actively trying to damage products I'm enjoying.

When they go over the line, is court ordered to take it down, taunts the justice system on twitter about how they don't give a fuck... I actually think it's a pretty good reason.

Ironically a Gawker Media sourced gif.

Oh man, now I vaguely remember my man Witz getting banned or hearing about it.

A little cool tidbit. I was one of the first people on the closed Kotaku to ever get reinstated from a ban. Crecente unbanned me from a ban ironically from Bashcraft, which Bash later emailed me saying that, "You Must Be Bulletproof" in the title, lol, and said that rarely if never happens.

I still have the emails from that time in 2007. As people can tell, I can be very sarcastic and abrasive a lot of the time... ironically my banning actually is 'spiritually' what spawned the 'best comment contests' they started running.

Need to jump back on Facebook eventually (taking a hiatus from personal Social Media) and post on Crecente's timeline with a blast from the past screencap, lol.

The OG Kotaku were some good times.

Where do you think people learn about games? How do you think I discover the indie games I constantly make threads about?

Some of it is direct from the developer, but other times, you have to do the digging yourself. Twitter, Reddit, GAF, Tumblr, TIGForums, etc. are all sources for information and new games.

So why is it a problem if an article is sourced from Twitter, Reddit, or what not?

My thoughts beyond the jokes:

There seems to be this massive differing opinion that "journalists" of Gawker Media and some of its outlets have versus that of regular people regarding what should or shouldn't be news. People's private lives are just that their private lives, it is nobody's business what other people do unless you are beholden to them (spouse, children, etc;). I would argue the President of the U.S. should be held in that regard to some extent because they are supposed to represent the people and our country itself. The thought that "we have this tape and people have the 'right' to know" baffles me. I don't care if Peter Theil is gay or whatever the hell Hogan does. It is between them and their loved ones.

We have come to live in a hyper connected society and it has all happened super fast. Laws haven't been able to even start to catch up partially because the people making the laws are out of touch with technology and don't understand 2% of it. There has been this loss of morals and good taste in our society that is really sad though. At the same time personal accountability has plummeted. Nobody will own their mistakes anymore.

The fact that in a deposition one of the people from Gawker said that child porn of a celebrity would be news is sickening. 4 years old would be his moral stopping point. I have no idea what the hell to even say to that, personally I wouldn't call it news I'd call it evidence. Evidence for the police to hunt down whomever did that horrible shit. Hulk Hogan was well within his right to sue Gawker and Thiel was well within his right to bankroll it. A jury of peers deemed Gawker to have overstepped and they will pay for it. Sadly some of the good journalists from that company and their families may be impacted because of terrible judgement from others in that same company.

Hope the good people working at those sites end up ok.

I still use kotaku, despite people shitting on them, despite how some of that shitting on is a bit warranted. Some good reporting and fun/helpful articles come out every now and then.

Now I do think people should look into Gawkers super shady history. Some of the articles they have done have actively hurt innocent people and have they have completely stomped on people's privacy despite taking a holier than thou stance on celebrity nude leaks like the fappening.

If anything happens, I really miss Patrick at Giant bomb, he and Dan are a delight as foils to each other and I think he, Austin and Vinny could have some good discussions.

I said this upthread, but I think there's a disconnect for some people between what "the Public Interest" means in actuality and what it means as a journalistic standard.
Just as "free speech" doesn't mean say what you want where you want without any repercussions.

He called Kamitani a 14 year old. That's not sober criticism.

It took custom art for him to rescind the slur.

Saying that you don't like a game's art style and find it juvenile is sharing an opinion. If you think that's somehow "damaging a product," no site should ever publish reviews, impressions, or editorials because there's a chance they might be negative.

Some of their writers have been on point in the past before.

Sucks that they have to suffer and potentially lose a job because some suit took a total nonsensical stance on a video that should have been private.
