Gawker still needed to purged from the internet regardless.

Aren't these pretty much wordpress sites with shitty themes now? I mean, what are you really buying? The domain names I guess.

More important reminder that this doesn't excuse Gawker's incessant breach of journalistic standards and actively trying to ruin people's lives in pursuit of selling clicks for $0.000001/ea.

Hogan having an extramarital affair or being racist does not give a company the right to publish unauthorized sex videos of him for money. Peter Thiel being a libertarian does not give a company the right to out him as gay for money. Being the CFO of Conde Nast or Timothy Geitner's brother does not give a company the right to out that person and then gay shame him into paying an illegal extortion. All of this $0.000001/ea.

If Gawker had some positive impact on journalism, news, or anything else, I might feel different. When people make the false equivalency of "Well, what if Thiel funded a lawsuit against the New York Times!" it's a hollow argument. Gawker provides nothing but trash, misleading articles, and actively works to uninform the public. Reading Gawker makes you more dumb. People who regularly read Gawker are less informed about the world than people who don't. Further, the New York Times works to further journalistic and editorial standards, while Gawker's raison d'tre is to undermine journalistic and editorial standards and ruin people's lives all in the pursuit of $0.000001/click.

Gawker's single biggest contribution to society, and the one that made them the most money, was about an iPhone that someone stole and then Gawker paid a high price for. Gawker is a self-glorifying pawn shop fencing stolen goods, that gay shames people, sells unauthorized sex tapes, and outs homosexuals for money.

Not sure if the software really matters, thousands of high profile, high value websites are powered by WordPress... Univision is buying the brand, its user base, and its advertising reach.

it is not being purged from anywhere so???

You really think they would want to keep the current writers there? It may not be right away, but they are as good as gone. Some people already left the sinking ship because of what has happened. In the end it won't be the same Gawker as you obviously somehow like.

please note that i never said otherwise! please also note that it is unfair to assume everyone working for gawker media is doing so purely for financial gain

releasing the video itself is perhaps over the top, but making known its existence is completely fair game. the man is an absolute piece of shit irl and should not be regarded as otherwise

Peter Thiel being a libertarian does not give a company the right to out him as gay for money.

he's a republican with libertarian leanings; the point being that his party's political platform is completely at odds with his sexual identity

side note: i find it kind of funny that he is "proud to be gay" yet was offended by being identified as gay to the point that he bankrolled another person's lawsuit

Being the CFO of Conde Nast or Timothy Geitner's brother does not give a company the right to out that person and then gay shame him into paying an illegal extortion.

this was admittedly shitty. that being said, a large portion of gawker's staff objected to the article and contributed to it being taken down

If Gawker had some positive impact on journalism, news, or anything else, I might feel different.

how are you quantifying this?

When people make the false equivalency of "Well, what if Thiel funded a lawsuit against the New York Times!" it's a hollow argument.

that is not false equivalency

you seem like an intelligent person. that being said -- and i hope you don't take offense -- this chunk of your post is steaming garbage; it's just your own bias and preconceived notions of what gawker is and represents delivered stream of conscious

Yeah, why do you think they are buying the sites? There's some ambiguity regarding Gawker.com itself and whether it will ultimately end up being part of the acquisition, but the rest of the sites should remain intact.

Releasing the video is the reason they got into trouble. Merely saying that a sex tape exists is not anywhere close to what they did. They published revenge porn, which is disgusting. Had it been some poor young starlet (say Jennifer Lawrence?) instead of a racist, over the hill old wrestler people would have viewed that shit in an entirely different light. If they wanted to write about what a terrible person Hogan is, have at it, but if you really think that was their intention with releasing the sex tape (as opposed to just looking for cheap clicks) you are incredibly naive. Hogan being a piece of shit does not strip him of his rights. And if you want to be upset about anything in this situation, be upset that the legal system is so broken that the only way someone can get any semblance of "justice" is by being bankrolled by a billionaire. Had Thiel not stepped in, Gawker would have tied Hogan (or anyone else they could wrong) in enough legal bullshit to get them to eventually drop the case. Gawker are bullies and they ran into a bigger bully. Cry me a river.

We still need a source on this. I'm in the mood for an overwrought wreck.

In the meantime while I'm ok with gawker going down after researching their... rather unsavory exploits, I'm not ok with it going down in a way that strengthens that Hogan creep. It's like if as if Ganon was killed by Vaati. I just can't shake this bitter taste.

i think it was a little of column a and a little of column b

Column a being a sleazy company who tried to get by on hit pieces and column b trying to rely on stalling the case through the court system by outspending the accuser until a billionare who had the funds to see the case through and get them properly set in their own self imposed outcome?

I hope Deadspin survives.

It sounds like this is just Gawker.com, and may be related to Hogan's seizure of AJ Daulerio's indemnification clause.

Basically, Univision structured things such that they never actually get Gawker.com in the sale, only the rest of the sites.

So when all is said and done, Gawker.com may still belong to Gawker Media.
