German Federal Elections 2017 |OT| Electing the new leader of the free world

So did Germany escape the right wing lunancy and continue being the most sane country in the world?

The right wing party got close to 13% in the election. They will be irrelevant as no other party wants to cooperate with them. But still, having Nazis in the Bundestag is bad enough.

Worlds better than the UK and the US though.

Seehofer: Hold my beer

Seehofer is head of the CSU, the main partner of CDU, the Merkel party. He wants a right wing push alongside with other CSU heads. Only thing we can hope for is their notorious lack of spine

Tbh the CDU/CSU should have done this months ago. Way before this election.

A more conservative CDU and a more left-leaning SPD is something positive imo.

I want a party with a comparatively hard-line position on immigration for example that's not full of right-wing extremists like the AfD.

Now CDU/CSU politicians are suggesting Schaeuble as Bundestagspraesident. I can't quite see the other parties being happy with that.

Technically yes, but it's more complicated.

This is a situation in both France and Germany.

Basically, the long-standing traditional parties in both countries have lost substantial support in respective federal elections. For example, both socialist parties (social democratic), the PS in France (Parti socialiste), and SPD in Germany (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands) lost substantial support. In both cases, these two parties suffered the largest loss of support in their history, and in SPD case it has existed since 1870s.

Merkel's party CDU lost substantial support as well.

Meanwhile both far-right parties in France and Germany gained support instead of losing support. So in another sense far-right parties in both countries gained more, grew stronger in their support.

Nonetheless, not enough to win an election. In Germany the far-right party emerged as the third largest party after this election, with CDU still being the first, and SPD the second, despite loss in support.

So what this means is that the far-right is still kept at bay in France and Germany, two very important countries for continental stability, but their presence is there, and we need to stop them from growing, because there is trouble on the horizon in Europe in the next 5-10 years if we don't get a handle on it now. Fortunately in Germany all of the other parties are sane and will never seek a coalition with a party like AfD who are pretty much isolated. The far-right at the moment is simply driven by one factor mainly, their hatred for Muslims, both at party-level and from support (single-issue voters).

I'm looking forward to play spot the difference, while all my foreign friends will be increasingly scared.

Hopefully the Greens can counterbalance the FDP on EU reforms in the coalition. Forces are aligned for real change in Europe if Germany is willing to act.

Whats going on with Frauke Petry? I didnt had time to check news since Sunday.

She first announced that she wouldn't join the AFD group in parliament. AFD 'colleagues' then pushed her to leave the party as soon as possible, what she eagerly did. Together with her slimy husband Pretzell. Dissing the AFD as 'unorganized', hihi.

Now she seems to look for other renegades to form a group in the Bundestag.

So that makes it just a normal day for the AFD wankers.

Mrs. Petry just had a change of heart. She will grow her hair, stick some flowers in it and help getting stranded whales back into the water.

Version B: she'll pull a Lafontaine and create a new fraction called "Die Rechte".

Barely related question:
Austrian elections are around the corner, happening on October 15th.
Anyone gonna make a thread for that, or is it not important enough?
Because boy do I have a lot of angry statements to make about that garbage fire.

My sister sure is glad she's bailing later this year. I'm glad she and her family are "just" Piefkes so they only have to deal with small amounts of insults by locals.

I'm having a hard time believing we will see a Jamaica-coalition.

How are the CSU and Greens going to find common ground on the immigration policy (Obergrenze/Familiennachzug) for example?

I think the only solution for this problem would be some kind of national plebiscite - and all parties have to adhere to the result of the vote.

This actually surprises me, never heard anyone voice that sentiment before, and I know many German people and work with mostly minorities.

Edit: For the record, I was talking about the parties, the campaigning, being disappointing and shitty.
You make it sound like we're a country of dangerous racists. Like minorities aren't safe.
Makes me a bit defensive.

Heard on NPR that a solid chunk of AfD vote were protest voters against Merkel/the status quo? You dumb fucks.

One of the best slogans I've read during the campaign basically translated as "Voting for the AfD simply because you do not agree with the policies of the current government is like drinking out of the toilet bowl at the club because you do not like the beer they serve at the bar."

That analogy hits the nail on the head perfectly imho. Of course, it also applies to the corresponding segment among those who voted for Trump, UKIP, Brexit, Le Pen, etc.

Nah, you're fine. Probably has something to do with that viennese superiority complex, but that's another story.

And yeah, the electoral campaign is one big shit show.
My sister thought the whole Van der Bellen vs. Hofer thing was as extreme as it gets...
I really don't envy you over this mess.

why you call them dumb fucks? it's the best and smartest thing you can do to provide positive change.
you also have to thank the dumb fucks who let the NSDPA come to power.
otherwise we wouldn't live in todays world

without bad there is no good and progression.
that's a basic principle that will never change.

Are you arguing that the election of the Nazis was a net positive? Let me guess which party you voted for.

We had the same said about the Brexit vote in the UK. And Corbyn's rise in the recent UK snap election. The 'it was protest votes, they didn't really want it' etc. Believe what you will.

First of all:
Voting for a party that is specialized on pointing out problems without providing realistic or implementable answers is dumb. It's not "the best and smartest thing", unless your goal is chaos.

Next:
We should thank the people who allowed the NSDAP to come to power? Because it eventually lead to a future which is good, it's good that it happened?
Would you tell a rape survivor who happens to be happy now "Hey, be happy it happened, since you ended up being happy in this timeline?"
Do you think the many happy American children of Jews fleeing from WWII should appreciate the Holocaust that threatened their families, thus making them move?
It's dumb as fuck. Jesus Christ. I hope there is some mistranslation happening, you can't possibly be serious.

PLEASE tell me I'm misunderstanding you.
But I don't think so. "Without bad, there is no good". Sure. Feel free to thank god for racists, rapists and warmongers.
I was about to go to sleep and now I'm wide awake and angry at the concept you put forth. Thanks for that.

You seem like a confused person, unless you forgot the /s.

Dann muss sich die AfD wohl ne neue Farbe besorgen. Irgendwas passendes, wie magenta, violett oder beige?

Both should get some shade of braun.

Unbelievable con job from some AfD members. "Lets get voted in and then form a totally different, less nazi-ish, party"

Well, let's look at the domain data. ;)

Edit: Letzte Aktualisierung im Juli? Did they plan this since summer?

Considering this just turned out to be another oh-so-funny prank by Boehmermann, kinda

This is only true for the Twitter account, "Die Blauen" still is something that Petry has made up, though not a party, she claims.
