Google/YouTube buyout of Twitch now complete (VentureBeat Sources)

Ten days ago, after they've mostly given up on it. Those rules were in place for three years, and screwed over several people (I had friends it happened to, one of the reasons I was burned on it). They "relaxed" them at one point, but it took THREE YEARS for them to officially stand down on the matter.

Wider support would be one. With a Google buyout we'll certainly not ever see a Windows Phone or Windows 8/9 app for Twitch given Googles rabid hate of MS. On the other hand maybe a MS buyout would hurt Twitch on Sony platforms for instance.

That said MS seems more open about non Windows support than it has in a long time.

Microsoft and wider support just became a thing now but let's not pretend they wouldn't lock it down and charge insane fees for licensing. Google doesn't even hate Microsoft, Microsoft just tries to cut corners around their services instead of being like everyone else and work with them. Remember, Microsoft started this Google war when balmer felt the need to talk alot of crap about Google and Apple. Either way, Google is the neutral zone in which I don't see anything being affected negatively. I'm kind of glad there won't be any favorites and everyone pretty has to do the same deals. If Twitch doesn't already have an App on W8, I don't think that's Google fault before and after this deal. That's clearly a MS issue.

No more copyrighted music in streams, google+ comments, NSA everywhere.

You could load an entire video at the beginning instead of this awful awful buffer shit that happens now.

The only improvements I care about is HD, 60fps, and the little pictures that show you what's in the video at a certain time frame. Everything else has been worse.

Says you.
I think for Americans, Youtube is currently shitty for everyone unless you have Google Fiber, your ISPs and Carriers are one of the most scummiest on earth, they are all battling for Google to pay more for bandwidth.

As an European, I can say my Youtube videos load from start to end in a few seconds, I haven't seen a buffering message since 2008/2009.

It's kinda killing itself anyway. The bigger streams are becoming obnoxious, and tough to watch/listen to.

Obnoxious? You are watching the wrong streams then...

Also, it's not killing itself. They have pretty amazing numbers lately, with all those LoL, Dota 2 and other events/tournaments. Even the top streamers are pulling high numbers, compared to last year.

---

Anyways, I hope streamers (and viewers) don't get screwed over by Google, if this turns out to be true. Would be a damn shame.

I would say he's right about certain streamers.
Monopolies are real.

How is it a monopoly?

Screaming man children and people who expose massive ammount of cleave in the hopes of people "donating" to them really piss me off

I just want to watch video games

It will be interesting to see how they will change Twitch or even make significant changes at all. They might break away from the gaming focus of Twitch and make it more open to other mediums to have streams. Twitch is already a household name, so changing the name is very unlikely. What should improve are the quality of the streams as now Twitch is going to have Google behind them much like how Oculus has Facebook behind them.

Twitch a household name?

I guess you missed the fact that the bigger streams are growing more and more every day faster and faster. Twitch isn't going anywhere any time soon.

I think that Google has the potential to make Twitch much better. It is common to have lag on streams even on medium/low quality and during big events or tournaments the stream is nearly unwatchable.

Twitch is a great service with a lot of users but they cannot hope to scale their servers using only the money the get from the audience. So either they start charging money or sell to a bigger corporation. Google's cloud will do just fine.

As to Google screwing Twitch up... I don't see how they screwed up Youtube, apart from comments which were horrible anyway. On the contrary Youtube gets so much video per minute uploaded that once again you need good service and hardware to push. Google allowed Youtube to remain largely free with some ads here and there.

If the gamers moved to twitch to escape google, what makes google think they will stick around after the buyout? Unless they actually make twitch better and not mirror the procedures of youtube, its going to end up a pointless buyout.

Well it did make commenting and using YouTube in general more obnoxious.
well, I don't remember a time where commenting on Youtube (ald following an exchange) was anything but obnoxious, but beside that as an account system is better than what of most competition offers.
Starting precisely with Twitch and its tendency to forget your cookies every couple of days.

Maybe i'm overestimating the popularity of Twitch, but how are they half the value of Oculus, who still have all to demonstrate?
Opportunity of growth.
Twitch could as well be as its peak (probably not, but it's not out of the question), while Oculus VR is just warming up at the starting line and it could blow up in popularity in some spectacular way, with a bit of luck.

People will say that's a good thing because in general comments on Youtube were terrible. Of course, what they fail to mention is that comments are in general still terrible, and you now have to use an obnoxious G+ account in order to comment on smaller channels where comments are in general pretty good. I know the latter is annoying as hell since I tend to follow smaller channels instead of the more popular ones.

So fuck Google and their G+ shit.

It doesnt matter to me if they improve Twitch to make it the best service in the world. Whatever happened to economists warning of the dangers of monopolies. Its funny how governments and regulators listen to the economists in some areas and yet ignore them in others. Its going to be really bad but no one will know that it could be better, because its all we know. Fewer and fewer players are owning more and more of the media, they control the message and means of that message. There's no opportunity for any new competition anymore they all just get bought up.

If you think the net result of Google buying YouTube has been negative year over year, you don't remember pre-Google YouTube. Yeah, you could get your anime, but 10 minutes at a time and only on your computer and only in standard def. Now, YouTube is on every platform with unlimited video size/length, streaming capabilities, is a continued free service for every user, and single handedly created an alternative measure of handling copyrighted material (CID tagging and attribution).

But no, Google+ was just as bad, I guess.

Gonna quote myself from the first page.

Why would Google suddenly say "NO STREAMING GAMES, COPYRIGHT COPYRIGHT COPYRIGHT" when they allow you to stream games on YouTube right now? They have systems like ContentID to cover their asses when copyright holders come after them, not because they're mean and want to spoil your fun. But guess what, most of those companies would have given Twitch a bunch of shit if they had a problem with the partner program or their games being streamed. Why would that suddenly be different under Google?

stop using common sense i wanna be mad at google

Well, twitch had a good run.
If I was an executive at a company, and there were comments like this when my company acquired another, I would take a serious look at how things are being run. People should be optimistic when your company buys another. I remember back when this was the case with Google. No longer.

Not sure what to think of this.

I mean, the immense success of Twitch is cool for the owners, obviously. But as a user I can only hope Google isn't going to completely change the concept or otherwise put tighter regulations on streaming.

Would you like to use your real name? No

Would you like to merge your Google Plus account that we'll force you to do in three months? No

Would you like to follow your Google Plus followers on Twitch? No

Would you like to use your real name now that you left Twitch and came back? No

We just made you another account with your real name that we'll automatically sign you into every time and ignore the fact that this is not your real account and not tell you. Would you like to set that as your primary account, even though we'll fuck up and keep switching you into it anyway? No

Would you like to participate into the chat? We need you to verify your Google Plus account. While you're there, would you like to use your real name instead of your Twitch username? No

RIP in peace, Twitch.

I'm talking about loading an entire video so you can skip to where you want without having to re-buffer/load which is what you have to do now. Basically youtube used to let you download the whole thing then watch it without problems now if I want to skip to a specific part it has to re-load, act glitchy sometimes I have to refresh, it's just annoying.

The comment section is now totally pointless as well, they got rid of the highest upvoted comments. And every other comment is now something like "saw this at work today, enjoy.'' meaning they posted it on google+ and it shows up on youtube comments. So half of them have nothing to do with the video it's just someone who posted it on their feed.

The extra features that actually improve things and give genuine new options have been good, but google continuously adds little annoying things that mar the experience. The amount of homepage/channel appearance changes, you can't see all comments unless you open a new link, the comments section itself, having youtube linked with google linked with gmail linked with g+ linked with everything universalized all over the internet so more data gimme more data always.

You can't post anywhere without it ending up somewhere else as well so the only option is to not use a user name. You can disable the google+ shit but not if you want to comment on videos. Then they ask for your phone number every time you login so they can have the data on there too it's like leave me the fuck alone already I said no.

I genuinely wish there was an alternative that just had the basic stuff, videos in HD, comments section, channels. I don't need anything else and that's essentially what twitch was/is. But nowadays there can be no other sites because now every youtube personality or channel people care about is on youtube and there's no reason for them to ever switch to something else because google owns or will soon own everything. That's how capitalism works, over time once you get past a certain point there's less competition, not more. Successful companies become more successful and monopolize. It's inevitable without government intervention.

YouTube was shit before Google acquired it.
I trust the Google. Hopefully they can tighten up stream lag and makemit stop crashing all the time.
Or maybe twitch will just be YouTube's video game section now. Who knows.
Exciting times.

Yeah, because YT wouldn't have been developed any further if Google hadn't bought them.

OH NO, WHAT A NIGHTMARE!
I no longer have an account on YouTube due to this. I was okay with an YouTube account. Then they forced google accounts, which I do not have and do not wish to have, even if it is a dummy account with fake information. So, I am no longer able to subscribe, comment, add favourites, or upload videos. I can't even watch "adult" videos because google believes that somehow, having one of their email accounts means you are an adult consenting to softcore porn.

You don't have gmail?

Not able to watch softcore porn has nothing to do with Gmail/yt with no sign in . This is a standard with everything but actual porn sites.

I am for one looking forward to being able to watch a stream without it buffering forever.

Youtube integration could be the worst thing to happen if they were to switch twitch over to youtube's architecture.

Delays on live youtube streams are way worse than Twitch, with at least 1-3 minute delay...

Google might have stopped the use of Google + for youtube comments but I still can't use them, I have to agree to pick between my real name or youtube name and BOTH options force a creation of google +, which I do not want.

I just hope google allow twitch to rock as they are without getting too involved.

Nothing you are saying strikes me as rational to any degree.
