Messi is the GOAT

Heshinsi

"playing" dumb? unpossible
You got eliminated from the World Cup after telling all of South America you are their king?

Messi is the GOAT, with the individual numbers and trophies to back it up. Hopefully the mess of a team that is Argentina can help him lift a World Cup so that the salt becomes endless.

Could you ever imagine Ronaldo acting like a little pretentious baby and quitting on his national team? Fuck Messi. His whole country had to beg him to come back after he ran off like a cry baby.

I have now heard it all. Also, he had Batistuta and Montella on fire that season.

Totti played in a good squad once in his career. And he won the league. The best player with the best squad tend to win the league, However, he also kept Roma at the top with a lot of shit players in the team for a further 15 years,

Do people really expect Ronaldo or Messi to have won the league/CL playing next to Mancini, Taddei, and Vucinic?

Messi is the greatest of all time. Club football is played at a higher level than international football. Messi can do everything CR7 can do and more. He's as complete as you can get. Dribbling, creativity, being an outlet for possession in tight areas, and of course scoring. These days Ronaldo only provides the scoring, while his creativity has become muted (assists are only 1 factor in creativity). Maradona didn't have the scoring, but was a better creator by a little. Who gives a fuck about Pele really. Guy even counts his goals against the adult league 5v5s.

Beware of the Ronaldo and Madrid fans. They enjoy being wrong because they think of Ronaldo as some sort of mom or something. They're just momma's boys.

GOAT would probably OG Ronaldo if he didn't get injured though.

No, but does Totti winning a single scudetto when paired with good players is somehow more of an accomplishment than winning 3 champions leagues? Not at all. You guys have jumped the shark with Totti.

You hand picked champions league elimination games in which he didn’t score. How about the elimination games against Arsenal, Milan, Bayern, or the finals?

It is as stupid as picking the games in which Ronaldinho never scored and making stats around them.
Your argument was that Messi always comes up big in elimination games.

I gave you all the games in which Barcelona were against the ropes, in champions league, needing a comeback and Messi was no where to be found pretty much debunking your theory that Messi always comes up big in those types of matches.

Messis only critique probably is that in big time elimination games he disappears yes of course he's come up big in plenty of other matches but I also gave you a fairly large sample size of games in which he's done Jack shit and arguably on a much more competitive platform that is champions league compared to international play.

Lol...if believing this makes you happy...hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha bet you started watching football when Barca started winning

unless the argument will always end in you are shit unless you win the World Cup.

Until Messi wins a world cup that is exactly what the argument will be. He blew it last time, and regardless of his overall performance he will always have the failures of the national team hanging over his head until they win the world cup.

Totti isn't part of this discussion because of his love for the shirt.
If he loved money, and therefore went to a giant club like Real or Barça, instead of staying at Roma, no doubt he'd be looked at with other eyes.

Messi is the greatest of all time. Even most players and managers say this. Winning a word cup will be the cherry on top of his great career.

He is the greatest of this era. Most players and managers say that Ronnie is the best with Pelè and Maradona , not Messi.

Which of the two are going to the World Cup in Russia?

You guys are so easily baited

He does answer in those matches dude. Of course not in every one he will save us, but at least in half the times we needed him the most, he single handedly carried Barcelona to victory. The Champions League of 2012 is all him for example.

This is a disgraceful and all too common opinion.

Iniesta is a top 5 all time and the most underrated plauer ever thanks to Messi.

What are you talking about? In the last 3 champions leagues Barcelona won Messi played a key role all the way. He score in the playoffs against Arsenal, Madrid, Bayern, and finals against Manchester United. Our ability to win the CL depends on Messi.

Iniesta is broken so often. When Messi picked up an injury in 2012 Bayern wiped us 7-0.

Don't bother, if you're not scoring it means you sucked. That's why Messi didn't do well against Juve in the final.

That's why Ronaldo's penalty which was the 4th goal in a 4-1 win without time remaining made Ronaldo's performance > Messi's Juve performance.

Iniesta is the most underrated player ever? First it was talks about Totti and now Iniesta, this thread, phew.

Iniesta gets standing ovations everywhere he goes, is spoken about as one of the best midfielders ever and has cemented his legacy at Barcelona. Please.

Messi vs. Manchester City last season was also bad because he didn't score. /s

Wait. I forgot one more part. If you coach your team from the sidelines during the final, you contributed much more than any goalscorer. Don't forget to write that down as part of today's lecture notes.

For the past 3-4 years the CL has been CR’s competition and it shows. Last year he carried the team to the win during the KO stages.
It's one thing to worship Messi, he's amazing, but it's cringy seeing the Messi fans shit over other players because of their bias.

Sad that they relegate their football to 1 player.

And that is what is wrong, being the best footballer is not the same as being the best winner.

Messi has taken a poor performing national side to back to back finals in tournaments they played. Argentina would not have made it out two group stages, or qualified for a world cup if it wasn't for Messi.

But people are gonna still say 'ah but he needs to win a WC' when Pele and Maradona won them when they were arguably easier.

Messi plays with a great club side, but a poor national side. However, Messi's qualities shine through in both. As they would in any side in the world. Doesn't mean he is always gonna win everything.

.

I'm not saying it's a correct argument, just that it is what everyone brings up when it comes to Messi. They will have to move the goal posts again if Argentina can get its act together this world cup.

He needs to win a World Cup to silence the doubters. Unless Messi does that next year, there will always be people who put him a notch below players like

Pele
Maradona
Beckenbauer
Zidane
OG Ronaldo

Being in a category with Eusebio, di Stefano, Platini, Cruyff, C. Ronaldo, etc. isn't bad though by any means.

I mean, he failed to help to win those finals. You just can't call him the GOAT and "forgive" him for not making the difference in a final, because if he is the GOAT, that's exactly what everyone expects from him.
Zidane is considered by many to be one of the greatest players of all time. Not just for the prizes he won. He also literally carried an average French side to the finals in 2006. It's hard to call anyone the GOAT in a team sport since you're dependant on each other's performances, but there is a case to be made for the players who elevate an average team to great heights. Natural born leaders on the pitch. Players like Johan Cruijff never won an international prize, but he is a player who helped shape modern football with his unparalleled vision. Zidane and Messi are perhaps the perfect embodiment of that. The best playmakers the game has ever seen.

I don't know how old are you, but in case you're a young fella, I inform you back in the day, both Maradona & Pele were as famous and revered as the GOAT just like today Messi & CR7 are.

The difference? they actually won the World Cup.

Hell, so far Messi has been unable to win the Copa América and some people call him the GOAT?

That's why some of us laugh at that statement, not because we "hate" Messi but because there have been other players in the past that have been as amazing as him (for their time) and at the same time, accomplished more, much more, cause winning a World Cup is something extremely extraordinary. In fact it's the ultimate goal for any football player.

Not only that but France would not even be in the WC if not for Zidane.

Dude went out of retirement (with Thuram) to bring us to the WC final.

He also had a weaker team then Messi today and a worthless coach, the two are not remotely comparable, Zidane was basically the acting coach in that period.

Cruyff is often regarded as Top5, don't think the "Not having a WC" stigma applies to him.

He's without a doubt amongst the greatest to play the game. Just isn't the GOAT IMO

Totti isn't part of this discussion because of his love for the shirt.

He could have followed Cassano, but look how that ended up.

I fail to see your point. Regardless of their position in the field, those guys were considered by everyone as the best, they were the key players in their national teams, and both of them achieved more than Messi & CR7.

Hence, to call either Messi or CR7 the GOAT is just ridiculous.

I give you since they are still in their prime, they have time to become the GOAT, but so far, nope.

Other than OG Ronaldo, the others are on another level to Cruyff regardless of influence IMO. Even the OG Mueller is an entire level. Was pretty much a goal per game God in NT and club on top of winning multiple INT trophies and the CL with Bayern thrice.

Messi as a single player is the goat.

But being the best single player doesnt give you world cups etc

Can we stop acting like he played with a bunch of scrubs in all WCs, it's fucking embarrassing. He also hasn't impressed despite his team as some try to imply during the latter rounds of these tournaments.

I'm always baffled how Gerd Mueller never gets mentioned (outside of Germany). The guy was a fucking machine, I'm not even sure there are that many players with a goal / appearences ratio over 1 in national teams (outside of players with like 3 goals / 2 matches), let alone ones with over 60 appearences.
I'm also wondering when Zidane will take over France, Beckenbauer is a bit alone in that list as WC champion coach.

On topic: I always find this debate funny, in how many of their respective fans can't accept that both are exceptional players. The discipline and sheer work CR7 puts in is crazy, and the genius of Messi shows every other match.
