Book contracts pay half up front (the "advance"); it's considered poor form to get that money back and the author typically keeps it if the book is cancelled for any reason (technically, the author is supposed to pay back any advance money that isn't matched by book sales, but they don't enforce that, either).

Eh, I think the right was looking for an excuse to distance themselves from him. He was a bit too gay, after all. But since society has come to terms with homosexuality and is generally okay with it, they really couldn't use that against him. Defending the rape of children? Oh they can use that.
Trump's admission of sexual assault was acceptable because he didn't explicitly admit one of his many victims was a child.

That's not what happened here, though. He said the things that are just now getting him in trouble a year ago.
He wasn't hurt in a debate or any of his recent media appearances, he was hurt by someone digging into his past and airing that dirty laundry in a way that he couldn't respond to or wiggle out of. That's what the "don't give him a platform" people have been advocating this whole time.
Maher had nothing to do with this, conservatives who didn't like Milo speaking at CPAC did (and it certainly wasn't because they give a shit about Muslims or trans people).
