God damn.

Reading the reply posted by Mack about the issue, what gets me is how these guys justify it to themselves.

I mean, when I'm drawing, I feel bad about using perfectly acceptable and reasonable time-saving tricks such as mirroring an element of /my own/ under penciling just to keep a figure balanced and such. I feel bad "tracing" over my own damn art instead of being better at drawing every possible thing on the page fresh!

Just in the interest of analyzing for curiosity's sake, I do wonder if guys like Mack are a bit too reliant on certain legitimate mnemonic tactics taut in some art courses / by some instructors. For instance, one technique I've seen used is for adapting to a particular style: you trace approximately over an existing piece of art in a given style, then next to your traced piece, draw a freehand drawing of the same basic object but without the tracing guide. Then you repeat the process using a different drawing by the same source artist / in the same source style. The idea is that it's your second, freehand drawing in each repetition that's important. You're supposed to be taking away an understanding of how to draw in the style, not simply ending with tracing something.

But a lot of these disturbingly professional-level artists seem to use that or something close to it as a cheat sheet more than they should...

This sucks. David Mack is actually a tremendously talented artist - better than Adam Hughes, thank you very much - and is a first-class nice dude to boot. I hate to see him do something like that, not a guy I'd have ever figured would jump the shark that way.

In his defence he's got mild schizophrenia which he doesn't treat with medication, so maybe he was a little out of it for a while and needed to get something done in a hurry. Doesn't make it excusable, but I do recognize that the guy's not operating under normal circumstances.

I thought this was a fairly common practice?

This is essentially stealing someone else's panel work. A lot of comic artists nowadays are uncompromising ripoff artists, it's kind of a shame, when Jim Lee left Marvel after his stint with X-Men, the other Marvel artists were literally copying Jim Lee's own work to the point of almost photocopying his pencilling, and Jim Lee was basically letting that shit happen, it's crazy.

Apply that same argument to anything else. Go, on, try it.

Animation: So it doesn't matter when animation footage is reused from different films, tv shows/episodes, or even in the same film? Yeah, it tells the story, but it's a cheap way out.
Scripts: Reusing bits of existing scripts would be like watching different parts of reruns sewn together.
Music: This is already done. Apparently, they justify it by calling it "sampling." Bah!
Literature: Try it here and you'll get smacked down for plagiarism.

I don't see why comic book art gets a free ride here. It's not paying homage to someone's art, it's stealing it.
In animation that does happen. Southpark was notorious for using the same walk cycles and assets for close to 3 seasons. No one cared, I wonder why.
Scripts: Copying a script happens a lot. How many sitcoms do you watch. What do think a remake is?
Music: bah? :lol okay buddy
Lit: heh i'll give you that, but I highly doubt it ever happens.

Artists have done this for as long as i can remember, on both DC and marvel. This is an issue between Mack and Maleev and Hughes i guess ( his shit is so generic you could have pulled them out of a "How to draw comics" book)

homages :lol :lol

shit, I actually dig Mack's stile. I can understand a panel or two, but aping a whole issue is really bullshit

EDIT: OMG, Mack is definitely not new to this crap
