-Sony Corporation,the world's largest game console maker,announced its consolidated results for the first quarter ended June 30, 2011 (April 1, 2011 to June 30, 2011)

-Sony Corporation posted an operating income of $340 million;the company reported a net loss of $191 million

-For the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, Sony expects to sell 15 million PS3s, 6 million PSPs and 4 million PS2s

So, Sony shipped 1.8 million PS3s this quarter compared to 2.4 million last year. I don't know how Sony will hit anywhere near 15 milllion PS3s without a $100 price drop.

Sales drop plus an increase in their forecast. Price drop guaranteed. Probably $100 less than current MSRP.

Not really when you take into account the insanely huge PS2 library and cheaper games.
I still buy a lot of new PS2 games as you can get the from £5-10 a piece.

Not quite. If you take out the FY2006-2007 Ap-Jn and Jl-Sp quarters from the PS2 software shipments it's lower. Still damned closed though.

I had always thought net loss meant the company made no money, instead lost the specified amount. Im not sure. Sounds wrong, but they might have made no profit and lost that much

They are a lumbering giant of a company that makes too many products that people aren't interested in buying. The few products people might be interested in take too long to come to market and are too expensive by the time they get there.

They need to shed workforce, slim down, and focus on a few key areas. Otherwise they will go down in history as the GM of electronics.

Well Sony seems to think they will make money this FY, and they have revised down so there is no reason to believe their expectations are inaccurate. Their forecast is net profit of ~$800 million for the FY, for the record.

By looking at the numbers? Maybe the PS3 was outselling the 360 by more than the difference between its decline and the 360s increase.

edit: wrong info. Last year they forecasted an $800 million profit, but lost 3.2 billion dollars. I wouldn't trust their forecasts....

That was for the last fiscal year...

They are forecasting a 60 billion yen profit for this year, down from the 80 billion yen they predicted in May.
