Ozark - Official Trailer (Netflix original series starring Jason Bateman)

Finished it last night and I loved the show overall! My favourite Netflix show in a long while (with Dear White People).
I still contend that it has the flavours of Breaking Bad and Fargo but still entirely unique in it's execution and framing. Martin and Ruth characters where breakout performances imo.

Really looking forward to a potential Season 2, the finale was done well and sets things up nicely.

Another neat thing I love is the O at the beginning of each episode, with the 4 icons that are different every time. Like a "preview" or "clues" to what awaits in the next hour. So cool. Never seen that done before, or maybe it has, or maybe not.

This was definitely a nice touch,
By Ep 4 I was pausing at that moment to really see what the image was and get more clues as to how the episode would go.

Ep 10 spoilers
Cartel dude just getting killed like that was incredibly fucking surprising, I figured he'd be the big bad for the entire show with the conclusion after X number of seasons being Bateman taking him out.

He should have lived. They went for shock value and lost a good actor and character imo.

3 Episodes in. As someone who grew up in southern Missouri I can really appreciate it on that merit alone. Pretty rare to see that part of the US be the focus, which helps give it its own flavor.

It's petty good so far, strong Breaking Bad parallels obviously as many point out, so anyone who liked that show should give it a try.

Yeah, that finale was something.
Shame to have lost Del but the whole scene was excellent and worth it.

Hopefully whoever comes in next season from that side has the same swag.

Ruth is the best obv.

Glad to hear the ending is good. The show is ok but lacks needed suspense, imo.

Without spoiling anything - can someone who has watched the whole series just give a yes or no to:

Do the mexicans come and sort out the redneck gang causing problems for Marty?

(I'm on episode 6)

Thanks :)

5 Episodes in.

The show is good, pretty gripping.
It feels like Breaking Bad, with a darker tone, but less depth.

Still very enjoyable, so far.
A bit predictable perhaps, but nothing that would make me stop watching.

I was actually kinda disappointed it went this way, although I should've guessed since the character is sidelined for like 80% of the show. I just really liked the actor who played him.

I hear you but at the same time, I can appreciate the turn. It opens up a lot of opportunities given how the cartel respond and who they send as a replacement. One thing to consider, Marty had a long standing business relationship with Del, so whoever they send, won't have that cushion of engagement.

Just finished watching it. Pretty good show and some damn good musical choices.
Did anyone else get freaked out over the baptism scene? My mom was freaking out saying she couldn't watch the show anymore until Mason pulled the baby up.

Peter Mullan is an amazing actor so I think there's a lot of potential with him, just depends how s2 goes if there is a s2.

Just finished the season. Loved it.

The characters were good, Jonah was the one who I disliked the most.

Ruth was a standout for me - the actress and character.

The end episode was good and I didn't see
the mob boss death coming

Next season should be good with
Ruth's dad getting out of prison, the casino and funeral parlour laundering ventures, and the FBI guys trying to get their revenge

I liked it. Especially Ruth. I'm interested to see where it goes from here.

Well, I'm pretty sure Mason intended to kill his baby and decided against it. An actual baptism wouldn't have taken that long as the subject only has to be underwater for a second. And for babies they don't even do that, for obvious reasons. It seemed to me he changed his mind, and then decided to turn it into a baptism.

Bateman's kids were just shitty full stop. The worst element of the show. Everything they did made me want to pull my hair out.

The hillbilly kids were great fun though. Ruth is definitely one of the best characters in the show.

loved the first 3 episodes. First episode was crazy but it continued strong imo (I can see how some would think its slow I guess). Bateman and Linney were a given because im a big fan of both, but I really like the redneck girl (or all the redneck family really). Super itnerested to see where it goes.

Does it look like there could be more? Do we know if there WILL be more?

Wait that was Peter Mullan?!?! I thought it was just an American actor that looked quite a bit like him and was also good.

I'm on episode 4 right now, I really like the dialogue in the show, it feels like nearly every exchange has purpose and it's almost like a verbal duel each time. It feels kind of snappy but not in an Aaron Sorkin kind of way. I don't know where this trend of hateable female characters originated from, but it is kind of something I'm a little cold on. Both Henry's wife and his daughter treat him like garbage yet his son seems pretty cool with him. I'm really taking my time with this one

Great start with a bit of a dip towards the middle. I hope it picks up again for the finale.

Super refreshing to have a well-written, rational main character who makes calm, logical decisions (for the most part) and is not afraid to talk about uncomfortable truths when the situation calls for it. Very down to earth, very human, very relatable.

Watched this show over the weekend.

Great premise and great execution. Glad we have a "drug" show where the married leads are both (mostly) rational people who communicate a lot and even share stuff with their kids. Would have been bored as hell with another Walter/Skylar relationship.

As a filthy European, I don't understand the difference between hillbilly and redneck.

Generally it's geographic: high country vs low country.

Hillbillies come from the "hills" of the Appalachian Mountains, making money mining, timbering, and mixing moonshine. Big on banjos, shitty teeth, inbreeding, and racism .

Rednecks come from lowland farming communities, hence the "red neck" from being out in the sun all day. Big on country western music, drinking shitty beer, and NASCAR, and racism.

The Snells in the show likely think of themselves as "Hillbillies" and don't trust lowlanders.

I'm actually glad you brought up Peter Mullan because after mulling over the show in its entirety during the past few days and I've come to realize something. I have seen and heard some comparisons to Breaking Bad here and there but I don't find that it's particularly apt once you move past surface similarities. For one, I find that Ozark's more subdued nature (I mean, it's really blue, for one) distinguishes it from the more manic BB, and outside of the focus on the unassuming family dynamic, I don't feel that much else really made me think of that other show. To actually get to my point though, Ozark reminded me more of another crime tv series which also happened to take place around a large body of water: Top of the Lake. Both shows even share a prominent actor! And he plays a villainous character in both! I'm talking about Peter Mullan, who plays Jacob Snell on Ozark and Matt in Lake. He's great in both, less slimy here and more sinister genteel patriarch but I recognized his brand of villainy the moment I heard his voice. Anyway, I really recommend Top of the Lake if you guys enjoyed Ozark. The criminal activities involved in either show aren't at all related, but there's something about the ambiance and pacing that's fairly similar.

Anyway I'm still thinking over how I feel about Ozark overall because while I don't quite love it, I like a lot about it.

Finished it, pretty enjoyable. The one part that threw me for a loop was
Ruth killing her own uncles to protect Marty.
What was her reason for doing that?

Because Marty showed her more respect and affection than her own father and uncles ever have. I appreciated that they didn't make it really obvious --
Marty giving her control of the stripper bar
was a big moment for her character, who is firmly established as someone who is ambitious and hungry for any sense of responsibility.

I have just finished this and Holy Fuck I hope Netflix writes a blank check to Bateman and let him do whatever the fuck he wants.

The whole thing was amazing, the people you're supposed to hate, you hate the most and the people you're supposed to like is flawed as fuck, the rednecks, specially Darlene, holy fuck I hate her guts, what an amazing actress and performance, Charlotte is an annoying teenager and Jonah a weird little brother, Wendy is AMAZING, holy fuck, after her cheating I thought there was no turning back, bu I love her character as well as Marty, Del Rio WOW.

Just throwing my thoughts, shame we have to wait a long time for season 2.

Also, give me more Buddy, the old fart is awesomesauce, I want to see him killing Hoffa, haha.

Actually now that I think back it all makes sense -

Marty gives her control of the bar and for the first time in her live gives her validation, while Russ hits her and her dad calls her a whore.

I think the reason it just struck me as so out of left field at the time was how she was effortlessly
lying to Wy and Three - even if she ended up hating Russ and Boyd,
would she really hurt Wyatt like that?

Just finished episode 6 last night, that ending was quite a cliffhanger. Can't wait to finish it. First new show to truly hold my interest in a looooooong time.

Just finished...really enjoyed the series! Glad I went in blind. Bateman and Linney gave great performances, but was pleasantly surprised by Ruth's actress and character.

I like them bucking the trend, with Wendy being in on things from the start...and them telling the kids so soon...just saves us, the audience, from a lot of unnecessary drama...there's plenty to go around already.

Felt a bit bad for Russ...and Petty is something else.

Definitely want to see more seasons of this show

I enjoyed the FBI character. Enjoy seeing a fed (usually the "cooler heads" in most crime show) just be unstable as fuck.

Ruth is great. The Langmore's are interesting. The FBI guy is a creep. Jason Bateman is phenomenal. His kids are solid.

Happy with the show so far.
