how do u initiate the speed boost? Is it the same way as using the wisps? How do you do the double jump?
Speed boost: B button
Double jump: press A again in the air when there are no enemies around.

How can a Sonic game look this good? It has to be some kind of trick.

It has been confirmed both in a UK review and on the box that you can swap out the Sonic Bots for your Mii's. Crazy.

EDIT: NGamer has the first review up. Here's some snippets thanks to Blackarms at Sega.com

- "What if Sonic were to play Mario at his own game and gain a little ground? ...the result is Sonic Colours."

- "The Similarity to the Mario Galaxy Games is it's abundance of ideas. This is Sonic Team in an uncharacteristically creative and generous mood. It's one that suits them well. The addition of the power-altering wisps is what does it."

- "These aren't powerups, they're toys - single-use shots of pure fun that have the happy side effect of opening up new pathways in already pleasingly labyrinthine stages."

- "The lists of powers goes on and on, and backtracking to find new areas in which to use them is a big part of the fun."

- "Crucially, the Wisps don't sacrifice Sonic's speed; they simply reveal more runways for him to work on. And that's brilliant. Speed alone reduces gameplay to a simple progression of left to right, but moments of calm exploration add texture and a sense of adventure."

- "The environments are every bit as playful as the new wisp powers ... each of them is packed with stages large and small ... some are built with one idea stretched to the limit; others are constructed solely to test just how robust the new wisp powers are."

- "The result is a series of intricate and occasionally extremely tricky levels."

- "Again, we're reminded of Mario Galaxy, particularly when Sonic plummets off the bottom of the screen for the umpteenth time and we get exasperated at our own lack of skill rather than the unfairness of the game."

- "Better yet, every stage compels you to push harder, aim higher. Maintain that speed, keep your eyes open, cross any available digits and you'll see wonders."

- "The world is there to be reduced to a blur or discovered; to be sped through or explored to your satisfaction for an improved rank and more hidden medals. The choice is yours."

- "Find enough of those medals and you'll unlock Game World, a Sonic shaped satellite that houses Eggman's Sonic simulator."

- "As a multiplayer game Sonic Colours is less than perfect (the speedy action often results in a game of tug of war using the screen as a rope)."

- The ability to swap Sonic for your Miis means there's still throwaway fun to be had." (in multiplayer)

- "If the 2D sections reconfirm Sonic as a true platforming superstar and make a virtue of his speed, the 3D sections can be more problematic. Kinetic, beautiful, and dizzying. Perhaps it's because the sort of precision we demand just isn't compatible with speed. To be fair, Sonic Colours does a good job of making these sections work but the result is stages that can feel on rails or, worse, railed for safety. But while still not perfect, they are definitely the best of Sonic's career to date."

- "Much of the game plays out in 2D."

- "The storytelling here is *gasp* rather good. Humour is the strong point and even Tails manages to be less nauseating than usual."

- "For the most part Sonic Colours is big on spectacle, so it's odd that the bosses are so lightweight. What good ideas are here (sabotaging a huge battleship before taking on its clockwork captain) are repeated."

- "Only the Starlight Carnival Boss, an immense warship, really pushed our skills by constantly switching from 2D to 3D."

- "But these are minor niggles in an otherwise first rate package."

- "Sonic Colours' greatest achievement, then, is in handing back control to the player without losing that queasy feeling that you're about to go off the rails."

- "Sonic's ditched the J-Rock for a full on orchestra, with impressively catchy results."

Summary - "Colours Rockets Sonic closer to the stratospheric heights of past glories and hints at a great future. Welcome back old friend, it's been to long."

Score- 86%

In comparison, they gave Sonic Unleashed 58%.

This game has Mii support. Not for lame party game shit, they'll actually run through Sonic levels.

Day fun.

I just pre-ordered mine yesterday and I can't wait. That review makes me very confident that this will turn out great. Too bad it wasn't on the 360 or PS3 though!

They must be making some other Sonic game and all this footage we're getting is pre-rendered. That's the only explanation I can think of.

DS version looks a lot like the Sonic Rush games, though, so that's believable.

I think this game looks good because it is more or less a streamlined Sonic Unleashed with the 2D/3D gameplay and almost the same mechanics. Sonic Team kept getting worse because they started from scratch with nearly every game post Sonic Adventure 2. Even games in 'series'(Secret Rings/Black Knight, Shadow/Heroes) play out differently. With Sonic Colours they finally went back to an earlier idea(Unleashed) and they improved on it.

Sonic Team has always had two serious problems facing every Sonic game since Sonic Adventure.

1.) Lack of Polish.
2.) Terrible Gameplay Additions.

Sonic Adventure 1 was unpolished. Sonic Adventure 2 was dragged down by Robotnik/Tails/Knuckles/Rouge missions. Sonic Heroes had a little of both. Shadow the Hedgehog had a lot of both. etc etc etc

Sonic Colors looks polished, and while there are some new gameplay additions with the color powers, they actually look like they're implemented in a meaningful and inventive way.

There are like five or six acts per stage, holy shit. This game seems longer then just about any other Sonic game. I'm not even worried about spoiling myself, because I know I haven't seen a fraction of the content.

EDIT: Planet Wisp....O_O

Music sounds almost identical to Super Mario Galaxy. They should do a crossover.
Mmmm, not sure I'd agree. These are completely bullshit terms, but this soundtrack definitely feels like it has Sonic energy, while Galaxy has Mario energy. Different vibes.

The best way I can put it is that the Galaxy soundtrack doesn't feel like its pushing you constantly forward forward forward, and this one does. But they both completely rock.

Oh my god, Sweet Mountain makes me want a new Space Channel 5 so badly*. The stage music and the sleek minimalist "60's future" architecture are very evocative of it.

Actually, I want a new SC5 so badly at all times anyway. But a tiny bit more now!

the only part that sounds like Mario Galaxy, imho, is the "Act completed" orchestral thingie.

EDIT: And the World Map.

I wish you could still hear the awesome soundtrack during power up use. For some reason that bothered me while watching the vids.

What the fuck is going on here?

How does this look so good? What is the music so amazing? Why are the visuals better than anything on Wii that's not called Galaxy or Corruption? Why does it look fun? Hell, why does it look playable?

This is not the modern-day SEGA I know.

If you watch that video with Planet Wisp, notice how the music is relatively low-key initially so you can hear the grass rustling underneath Sonic's feet, and is timed just right so that when you exit from the grass and hit the main path the beat kicks in. It's the kind of attention to detail I thought Sonic had lost a long time ago.

I can't believe Im saying this about a Sonic game, but these new vids tap directly into the pleasure centers of my brain.

I also really like that distortion technique whenever Sonic breaks the sound barrier.

It's strange how this is going to be the best sonic game this year. You'd think Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would be the better game but in the end it seems the 3D game is going to win. This is what happens when sonic team is given time to flesh out these ideas instead of completely switching things up with every game.

Yeah, I was noticing that as well. Its a shame that they have screwed the soundtrack in one way: by having it cut out whenever you activate a power-up.

Also, I'm loving the game's dry sense of humor.
