Haha how has this thread been semi derailed with that independent film example the full quote is

“It’s not The Dark Knight,” he says. “One of the special things about what we’re going to try and create is that you’re going to see the biggest independent film ever. It’s not going to be an epic thing; it’s going to be a film surrounded by these incredible things, but that follows this boy and his life. Peter Parker is a favorite of many because everyone can relate to him, and we’re going to try to make everyone relate to our Peter Parker. And John Hughes is a perfect example of what we’re going to try and do.

It makes sense in that context and the feel he says they want to try and create.

Any superhero movie that doesn't end with thousands of faceless minions destroying a major metropolitan area in a cg orgy qualifies as having that indie vibe now.

A Kraven and Chameleon combo would be a good threat for rookie Spider-man.
Then they can establish Kraven so "Kravens last Hunt" will be more impactful when it happens.

I still can't see him as Peter Parker or Spider-Man. I don't really give a shit if he can do back flips.

If they're going to make another highschool spider-man movie, just can it.

The fuck?

We have yet to actually get a proper high school Spider-Man movie. Peter has been like a senior graduating out of high school in all the other movies they've done, this will be a very welcome change of pace. One of the notes from the Sony leaks was actually a Marvel Guy going over the ASM2 script saying "Why is he graduating already!?!?!"

Yeah, this movie should take place in school and show Peter's life with his class mates in high school. And how he struggles but is still a smart kid.

I think the best way to use Kraven would be to do what they did in Ultimate Spider-Man. He's a total joke that Spidey defeats with ease for a movie or two. Then when he comes back, the audience thinks he's a joke only to discover he isn't.

Just as long as he doesn't look up how batteries work on youtube.

Man, people are really stuck on this independent thing. It truly is a brain twister how he meant it.

I believe it. Disney/Marvel already gave us the gripping 1970's political thriller in Winter Solider. Now they're going indie with Spider-Man. Sundance is gonna go bonkers.

So basically Spider-Man's going to be in 6 minutes total of a 156 minute Spider-Man movie again?

Fucking hell

There's been like 2 or 3 in highschool. Even then, kid spiderman is worst spiderman.
OMD and the Stacy kids are a whole other ballgame.

You might be jumping to conclusions.

Not if Spider-Man 2 and 3 were any indication. I'm sick of these being Peter Parker movies. Why can't it be like the 60's comics where he starts the story as teenage Peter for like 3 pages then is Spider-Man for like the other 16. Then a one-page Peter wrap-up.

That's the good stuff.

I was thinking more along the lines of Watchmen's intro credit sequence.

Tonal wise, would something like the atmosphere and banter from Life is Strange be good? A coming of age high school movie with a young Spiderman?

Because of all the things about Spider-Man, Peter Parker's life and his frustrations are what made that character outlive the countless other disposable superheroes of the era. Spider-Man really isn't anything more than a quip machine without the weight of his real life.

Can we just get JK Simmons back as Jonah? That's all I ask...

Well, then they gotta tip the ratio a little more in Spidey's favor. The movie's called "Spider-Man," I want hella Spider-Man in it. "Independent movies" aren't a good sign. Heck, the last two were directed by the 500 Days of Summer guy-- pretty much the king of "independent" movies.

EDIT: Always onboard for more Simmons

If Sony can get away with completely rebooting the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale and still keeping Judi Dench as M...I think they could easily get away with bringing back JK Simmons.

what?

aren't the Star Wars films the biggest independent films of all time?

also didn't they try (and fail miserably) with the whole indie schtick with webb, who was brought on board with 500 days of summer as his entire resume

Agreed. On top of that, WB went through three different actors as Batman in their initial cycle of Batman sequels, but kept Michael Gough as Alfred and Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon for all of them.

Plus let's be honest, other than Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, JK Simmons as Jonah was one of the best casting coups in the Raimi trilogy.

They mean that the film will be more intimate and character-driven and less 'random villain attempts to destroy New York'.

They mean that the film will be an hour and a half of Peter Parker with Uncle Ben & Aunt May, love interest melodrama, bully at school and spider bites. 30 minutes of random villain who attempts to destroy New York.

The last Spider-Man movie I saw was 2, so unlike a lot of you the taint from some of the other movies hasn't affected me. I'm not a (movie) Spider-Man fan since 90% of the time he seems like he's just CGI, but if they do this one right, I'll get on the hype train.

My god, at least wait until they started filming before jumping to conclusion.

Spiderman used to be my favorite superhero, but there's been too many tries and they've run him straight into the ground IMHO. This has to feel insanely fresh and new to get my attention, and I can't even imagine what that would mean.
