Actor/comedian/rapper Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) has created a new FX series called Atlanta that he is describing as “Twin Peaks with rappers.”

Set to debut in September, Atlanta will be a 10-episode series that will revolve around around two cousins trying to come up in Atlanta‘s rap scene, but have completely opposite views on how to get to the top.

It’s the show I always wanted to see on television,” Glover, who makes music under the name Childish Gambino, said. “It’s easier to comment on what’s happening on TV. TV shows are like novels now, you have to invest in them.”

Isiah Whitlock Jr., who plays Glover’s father, said, “It’s about truth. It’s about life. Even though it is a show for rappers, there’s a lot of truth, a lot of life to it.”

The semi-autobiographical show is about Earnest “Earn” Marks (Glover), who returns home to the ATL for a second shot at a music career after his cousin’s music video goes viral.

Created by and starring Glover, the 10-episode Atlanta focuses on two cousins with opposing views, Earn (Glover) and Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), as they climb the ladder of the city’s hip-hop scene.

Rounding out the cast are Lakeith Lee Stanfield (Dope) as Alfred’s right-hand man Darius, plus Zazie Beetz (Applesauce) as Van, who is caught up in a complicated relationship with Earn.

Finally

seems like Donald has been working on this for like 4 years. He always talked about a show he was working on and it just never came, I assumed it was canned.

Like every FX show it will be fucking amazing and receive none of the recognition it deserves.

Reminds me of Atlanta pro teams. They are... scratch that. Doesn't apply.

Love Donald Glover, he is so talented. From writing, to stand-up comedy, to acting in TV shows, acting in movies, and rapping. He does it all.

This project has taken so long to get off the ground, so happy it's finally happening. His Childish Gambino short film stuff has been incredibly interesting, including his script for Because the Internet. I'm expecting great things from Atlanta as a result.

Will only watch if Young Thug makes a cameo.

But, seriously, the show's vibe is appealing despite not seeing a snippet of footage. I love the trailers' atmosphere, and I can only hope the full show lives up to it. Seriously, the live-action comedies FX and FXX have have been phenomenal. You're the Worst, Baskets, Always Sunny, and now (hopefully) this.

Seriously what's up with all these shows trying to do the Twin Peaks vibe the year before the real deal returns? Trying to pre-emptively eat that lunch or?

Anywho this looks decent, will check out.

Invoking Twin Peaks is like invoking Dark Souls. I just go "yeah okay sure." The premise of the show doesn't particularly sound Peaksy. But I guess maybe they're talking about the quirkiness of the characters? Who knows.

Hey, my friend worked on this show! I didn't realize it was gonna be an FX thing. For some reason I was thinking HBO.

"Twin Peaks with rappers" is not what I was expecting, but sure, why not?

Hiro Murai directed at least the pilot, which excites me most. He's done a host of cool music videos (a few for Childish Gambino, plus for Massive Attack, Flying Lotus, St. Vincent, etc), so I'm intrigued to see what he does here. The teasers feel very much in his style.

I'll give'r a shot.

Loved him on Community, and Derrick Comedy, so hopefully it's charming and weird.

Hmmm, by chance did he direct Sweatpants.

Heh, yep. Teasers definitely feel a bit like that.

The guy has superhuman talent and is totally weird.

It'll either be great or it'll be a disaster. Either way, I'll be watching it.

Ludwig Goransson is composing the score, so that should be great if there was any ever question.

None of the teasers are available for me to watch, so please tell me that the show is colour corrected the way this picture looks? It's gorgeous.

They're not region blocked on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AtlantaFX

I don't think we've seen any footage from the show itself, but the teasers are both color corrected like that.

Love Donald Glover (Community) and FX has a pretty great track record as far as basic cable goes so I'm in.

all these shows namedropping Twin Peaks too often. This looks nothing like that and doesn't seem to have Lynch's trademark style behind it either.

I dislike Gambino's music but the subject matter is interesting, will definitely check it out.

That third teaser was great. Music in the first two was great as well.

Still waiting to see where the Twin Peaks part comes in.

If its tonally similar to Twin Peaks but in an urban setting, id be so down for that. Hopefully its not just being tossed as a buzzword.

The teasers are great. I don't really know much about the hip-hop community beyond listening to some artists but I like the vibe.

Been to The Glennwood many times. Will be very interested not only for Glover but to see how it portrays my city.

Been a Childish Gambino fan since I was in middle school (when he went by mc dj), born and raised in the same part of Atlanta as him, and met him twice around the times of his live performances here. To say I'm excited for this show is an understatement.

Same here. Instantly recognized it being in East Atlanta Village. I'm usually around the corner at the Elder Tree though heh.
