The Great War - PBS

9CAPeHC.jpg

Drawing on the latest scholarship, including unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters, 'The Great War' tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The series explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native-American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten.

'The Great War' also explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through three-and-a-half years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, thereby transforming the United States into a dominant player on the international stage; and how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in American history. It is also a story of little-known heroism and sacrifice (including the deadliest battle in American history) that would leave more than 53,000 men dead on the battlefield and more than 60,000 dead from disease. American fatalities would come at a critical time in the war, but they would be dwarfed by a cataclysm of violence that would ultimately claim 15 million lives.

The Son - AMC/Sundance TV

Based on the New York Times best seller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel, 'The Son' is a sweeping family saga that spans 150 years and three generations of the McCullough family. The series tells the story of Eli McCullough’s transformation from good-natured innocence to calculated violence, as he loses everything on the wild frontier, setting him on the path to building a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege. 'The Son' deftly explores how Eli’s ruthlessness and quest for power triggers consequences that span generations, as the McCulloughs rise to become one of the richest families reigning in Texas.

Twin Peaks - Showtime

One of the most groundbreaking and influential television series of all time, the new Showtime series picks up twenty-five years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town were stunned when their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. It's that time of year again where I try not to get too attached to any of the new network shows because nearly all of 'em get cancelled after the first season anyway.

Any early buzz for any of the new shows? Big Little Lies has an insane cast for a TV show, so that's probably gonna be big.

Dan

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
This might be optimistic, since I'm beginning grad school in a week. I suspect even more shows are going to get waitlisted or dropped for me this year than last, and the situation won't improve.

The Affair
Big Little Lies
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
The Expanse
Fresh Off the Boat
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Taboo
The Young Pope

The undated shows:
The Americans
Archer
Bates Motel
Better Call Saul
Hap and Leonard
The Leftovers
Master of None
Playing House
Review
Rick & Morty
The Son (pending reviews)

Bubble shows:
Girls (do I really care to hate-watch the final season?)
House of Cards
Love

Dropped:
Black-ish
Homeland (and Showtime as soon as The Affair ends)
Humans
Sherlock
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (since I never bothered with S2)

The Wall - NBC

Yes, that's what the world needs, more Chris Hardwick.

Which site do people use for TV show reviews? There's that much on that I found TV.com to be useful at telling me which shows were good. But now I'm finding they seem to report news more than reviews so I'm probably missing some good TV.

Here's a thread with a bunch of different sites/critics' 'Best of the Year' lists

you should be able to find a critic/site that aligns with your taste by looking at what's in their top 10~

I might watch American Gods live. I might give Powerless and Training Day a shot for the talent involved. Riverdale because CW. Anything else will be at most dvd purchases.

For returning shows I will take the 100, the originals, izombie, reign and maybe scandal if the reviews are good.

Bless you, Ratsky. There are so many shows that would have fallen under my radar if not for these threads.

Divided States of America
Taboo
Emerald City, I gotta watch the first episode. I just gotta.
The Mick
Crashing, not a huge fan of Holmes' material but I'll give this a chance
Abstract: The Art of Design
Legion, not expecting much
24: Legacy, I'm a 24 nut. Not even gonna lie about watching part, probably in for the whole ride regardless of quality
Powerless, again another I'm watching to see if it's a disaster or not
Riverdale, Stupid. Sexy. Teenagers. I'm so in. The new Archie run and Afterlife with Archie turned me into a big fan
Making History, I remember digging the trailer for this
American Gods, love the novel and Bryan Fuller is the showrunner. Sold.
The Handmaid's Tale
Marvel's Iron Fist, I might be burnt out on Netflix Marvel. Despite being a huge Iron Fist fan, I'm really not pumped for this one.

Too ambitious as always. I'll probably watch two episodes of most of these and then drop them.

Not too much new for me this Spring.

I'll try out the new FX stuff: Taboo & Legion, the new HBO stuff: Young Pope, Crashing, Big Little Lies, 24 Legacy from the broadcast networks, Iron Fist from Netflix, maybe Riverdale if it reviews strongly, plus stuff like Twin Peaks or American Gods whenever they finally air.

As for returning shows I'm looking forward to a lot: Hap and Leonard, Homeland, Billions, The Magicians, The Expanse, iZombie, the final season of Bones, final season of Orphan Black, Sherlock, Baskets, plus a bunch of other things I forgot/was too lazy to type.

"Not too much." Lists ten new shows.

What a time to be alive.

Jesus, there are a lot of recycled concepts in there.

Also, who the hell gave John Lithglow a knife? You never give Arthur a knife!
Also, as someone who stopped watching The Blacklist after season one or two, apparently Tom is still alive. And the original show not cancelled. Huh.
Also, nothing sounds remotely compelling. :(

The only worthwhile new thing I saw was Ghosts in the Hood, because that frankly sounds amazing, going after that typical "white people shit".

Already watching / resuming:
Colony S2 (back for another round of "nazis from space, also some family spy stuff", hopefully they'll include more outside the zones this season)

Will Entertain for one or two episodes before judging (in the cancellations thread):

Ghosts in the Hood (please be what I hope it is)
Taboo (mostly because Quarry)
American Gods (Fuller, yes, but that picture looks awful)
Powerless (to see how awful it is)
Abstract: the Art of Design (yay!)
Common Sense (very maybe)
Time After Time (only if the hook works, which is unlikely)
Madiba (maybe, but it could be good for perspective)
Training Day (because Paxton, even if it's probably not good)

Great job on the thread. Not a ton of new shows really catching my eye. Will see what people end up thinking is good. Will probably try these at least:

New Shows
American Gods: Probably most excited for this of the new ones.
The Good Fight: The promo and info on this has me excited, but the fact it is on CBS's streaming service kind of kills my hype.
Taboo
The Young Pope
Training Day
Big Little Lies
Crashing

A lot of returning stuff I'll be watching again. Won't list them all. Most excited for iZombie, Black Sails, The Good Place, Kimmy Schmidt, and Rick and Morty.

It's currently scheduled for May.

Ah bummer :\

I'll give Legion a chance because the ads seems a little intriguing but doubt I'll stick with it.

Hate Thy Neighbor could be good as well, Viceland is probably my most watched non-sports network at this point lol

Vanillalite

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Magicians
Voltron
Rebels
Lemoney Snicket

That's it for "Spring" TV. I'm in for GoTs, Veep, and SB when HBO drops them in actual Spring along with Star Trek.

Very nice OP.

I'm pretty much onboard for the superhero shows, Better Call Saul, Survivor, and The Walking Dead, so for sure Iron Fist. Planet Earth 2 is really good too.

The rest is wait for the reviews. For me there is always a bunch I try for an episode or two but never stick with it. I'd rather watch hockey and baseball.

Good OP.
But first time I can say I was really depressed looking at the shows. There isn't a single one that looks good as a newcomer. That is just a nightmare of a list.

Training day...could be good. Just because who is involved but damn.

I can't tell if it is what you are looking for, but I use the TVShow Time app on my phone. Basically you add whatever shows you watch or are going to watch. One page has what/when stuff is coming on or back if it is further off. And the other basically has a list of shows with all the episodes you still need to watch. Like along with new stuff, I am watching Buffy and I just keep track of it on there too, so it can be old backlog type shows too. Pretty nice-looking app. It does have some social stuff, but I don't use it. The app might be worth a look to see if it is what you are looking for. Sounds like maybe you are looking for a more general guide with all shows coming on though, can't really tell.

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
