An official statement from Viz in the wake of the weekend's developments:
Viz Media said:
Our goal at Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha is to provide the best experience possible for keeping up with the most current chapters of your favorite manga series. This unprecedented effort is an unique collaboration with the publisher of the original Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Shueisha. Furthermore, this experience will be improved and shaped by the readership of Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha. Without qualification, we treasure the support and feedback of our fans. It is only with their participation that this special collaboration between the creators, the Japanese and North American publishers, and the readership can move into the future. But our journey has just begun. We have a long way to go. By making this journey together, there is no limit to what we can do.

At Viz Media, we've taken bold measures to bring the best manga titles direct from Japan as quickly as possible. We have laid out the foundation for the digital Viz Manga platform, which can be accessed through any web browser at VIZManga.com and through the Apple iOS app store. From these beginnings, we can already feel the worlds of fans and creators coming closer together.

One thing has not changed. By reading legal, quality translations, manga fans support the manga creators directly. It is this love and support of manga fans for manga creators that will allow manga-ka to continue crafting great stories for many years to come. And it is with this support that we, the publisher, can improve and deliver more of what fans love to read.

But why just them? There is many other popular websites doing the same thing, what's so special about mangastream? Were they that much more known?

There's nothing specific but that's a possibility. In the Unofficial OP podcast, which had a translator MangaStream used, and a (former?) freelance translator that translates for VIZ, it was mentioned that on the Jump Alpha site, comments were being posted to the effect of "why pay for this when you can get the latest on Manga Stream for free."

edit for above: Right. Their quality was better than most, if not all others. They were very speedy as well. It was mentioned in the same podcast that people were often tweeting about the results of this weeks manga which reached their creators - before the manga was even being sold in Japan.

*Applause*

You must share your secret to accomplishing this feat.

On an unrelated note, anybody read Sacred Blacksmith? It's getting pretty good.

Nothing much really, i just read through it.

Same. The MC annoyed me in the beginning but he was alright near the end

Yea when
the Dog Knight died and the MC realized what his wish was he slowly started on the road of getting better as a person and a warrior (Babylon is fucking awesome).

I also liked how they handled the deaths and the subsequent impact on the members of the group (plus them wearing all black for one of their fallen comrades while fighting an enemy was pretty fucking badass)

But why just them? There is many other popular websites doing the same thing, what's so special about mangastream? Were they that much more known?

Their quality was top notch to the point they would seem to have a monopoly over the big 3, plus i think being based in the US made them an easier target also.

I still don't get the restriction that allows such a powerful nen ability to exist. Simply having to sleep it off doesn't seem strict enough, unless people dying if the 3 wishes are denied counts?

It's likely Alluka's nen abilities have several restrictions piled on top of each other to make that powerful.

1. It has to be used by someone else is likely a proper restriction.
2. If one asks for several requests, Alluka/Nanika will ask for compensation
3. That compensation is connected to the magnitude of the requests.
4. If I recall correctly, the target of the compensations are either the person themselves or the ones that the requester loves the most.

Additionally, it seems that the above rules can be bypassed by someone that Alluka/Nanika really loves/adores, in this case Killua.

5. Because Alluka/Nanika loves Killua, he can use the powers without compensation as long as it's a command and not a request and those commands are absolute to Alluka/Nanika.

I'd suspect that's more than enough restrictions to give that kind of power to her Nen. Remember that Chrolo/Lucifer has 4-5 restrictions required for him to steal Nen abilities and Kurapica has several as well to power himself to the same level as the Spiders, who themselves were more powerful than most of the ants, aside from the Royal Guard.

This is a pretty good resolution though, this will prevent usage of Alluka/Nanika's powers to cause harm without Killua knowing it. It'll just be a matter of him not getting controlled again by Illumi.

I'll be interested in where the story goes from here. Kurapica still has the spiders to deal with and the Ants issue might not be totally solved. There is of course Hisoka too.

That's one of the main drawbacks of the large online reader sites IMO. Back when you didn't have these sites hosting thousands of mangas, you'd have multiple groups translating mangas like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece.

But as these manga reader sites have gotten larger they've begun to "dictate" which group's manga releases will be more popular based on their release speed. They snatch up/upload the quickest released chapters and completely ignore other group releases, which make the other "slower" groups feel like their efforts are pointless since most readers are only reading/linking to the fastest released chapters and they drop the series.

This Mangastream situation wouldn't have even caused anyone to blink if these "slower" groups were still around.

But wasn't Mangastream one of the "slower" groups though?.

Do a manga bet. I read one of your shitty shoujo manga and you read Biscuit Hammer

So basically he was faster all along.

I don't know, I'm cool with it. I still don't need he should overwhelm him THAT much (even if he's faster, he's still damaged, and his opponent is totally fresh still) though, that's a bit silly.

Magi

Sinbad needs to get his stuff back, seriously now. And Aladdin will probably make it for a last second "I understand everything" badassery.
Banker still being there means it's not really close to over yet.

Some of the complete imbeciles you see in the manga community make me want to cut ties with it forever.
.

There's literally two guys (PROzess and DatCat) posting the majority of the negative comments in that topic and both of them admit they are trolling:

some of us just like to add fuel to the fire and keep the discussion going.
I mean, what else are we going to do waiting for the next raw and/or scanlation to hit the net?
I know, I'll watch commie sub's release on youtube becuse it doesn't matter where I watch it. and youtube have all the animes i need. and you know what? commie sub will not bitch about it. because they don't care where i get my anime from.

Topics such as this are the only reason I'm still in the community.
Nothing more entertaining than trolling readers~

It was mentioned in the podcast that Viz new about mangastream's existence for a long time, and its implied they only took action because of Shueisha (Mangastream's popularity was at an all time high)

Comments like "why pay for SJ alpha when you can read it free on mangastream" didn't help either.

The One Outs anime was pretty great the manga wasn't that far along last I checked but it probably time to check again. Thanks for the recs. Will definitely read Hanakoto if you think that highly of it.

In case you are having a hard time finding it I spelled it completely wrong there. It's Hanaotoko not Hanakoto.

New story arc, but it's not fall yet? Ah whatever, this should be entertaining enough.

LOL at the dakimakura and pizza dough Destructo Disk.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Silver Spoon - Actually pretty meh this week. I don't like the whole concept of we don't know where they're going or for what reason. Seems like it's going to be something dumb. Also very random that Gluttony was there and threw a kienzan with pizza dough.

It's not my fault that I'm not popular

Y'know it's kinda scary how much Yoh and Hao are similar. Might as well just write "good" and "evil" on their foreheads and be done with it, they're the same thing in everything else.

fucking whatever. this chapter never happened.

Cage of Eden

Okay be real with me here, you saw this coming. You did, didn't you.

Toriko

And here we go, the biggest mind-blowing reveal in the history of the series so far. Toriko and Komatsu are both 25.

Fairy Tail

Bad guys getting an unfair advantage by fighting dirty, yadayada.

Evil guy with a design that annoys me pops up, not liking this one bit.

One of FT's weakest points to me has always been villain design, anyone who doesn't
end up on the team is just flat out ugly or unlikable. That new dude already looks like
some sort of lame throwaway character, awful.

Fairy Tail

Semi interesting fight... Is Zeref the motif of every single villain in this manga? Yawnz.

Fairy Tail loli master is what keeps me reading this. And maybe boobs.

So the whole casino business is to get the casino back to Soo. I await Ken´s inevitable revenge on white dragon. The whole casino arc was underwhelming.

Fairy tail

Lucy will lose. Yes. Hair magic is lame especially when Lucy has Caner to cut hair.

You aren't going to be happy with the next arc which is by far the worst in SKR. I wish it would die but it still remains in existence.

It was an ok power. Psycho red head has horrible powers but w/e. Lucy used her lamest summons too. I fucking hate Tauros, Scorpio and... Caner :|
