Final tally: not so bad, almost bingo. Was thrown off by Little Mac though, I was totally expecting Dixie instead.

My only disappointment is no Bayo1 port and no mention of MH4 going WiiU...but hey, otherwise pretty kick ass ND. I'm more or less satisfied :)

Man, that reporter was right when he said last year that Nintendo had fired all its vaporware cannons. I feel like I am seeing preview videos of all the same big Wii U games I saw more than a year ago.

It's not a feeling. It's real. We just saw the same stuff we did last year and it's pretty sad that we're still seeing the same games. :( The Wii U is already running on fumes. If anybody denies it then they're kidding themselves. We're seeing the last year of significant titles in my opinion. I think there could be a reason we're not seeing a lot of new Nintendo games announced.

damn, i just want to see a new wii u retail game already. aside from hyrule warriors i don't think anything new has been announced since early 2013....jesus christ nintendo.

yes, the lack of new game announcements really makes it feel like we'll be seeing a new nintendo home console sooner than expected.

Pretty good Direct. Although not much 3rd party 3DS games were shown on the NA stream...

Japanese 3DS VC is just killing it... step up NoA! >_>

I just don't understand how it was supposed to be for Spring titles and all the Wii U games are late 2014 with no exact release date.

If we see some titles slip to 2015 that have been announced as 2014 for a while, I suspect Nintendo is indeed winding down Wii U development already, cutting its losses and moving on to its successor.

The fact that after a very barren 2013 which Nintendo apologized over and over again, we are seeing 2 retail titles in the first half of the year (one which was delayed from 2013) does not strike me as evidence that Nintendo is all hands on deck in terms of helping Wii U gain momentum.

On one hand, not a lot of games I want coming this year which sucks. Smash, DKC, and Kirby 3DS look like winners. Maybe grab a GBA VC title.

On the other hand, I have so many titles already to play from last year and prior. So this is probably a good thing in the long run.

Another hype train crashed ...

At least X, and Bayonneta 2 it is alive.

In the Japanese direct, Iwata said that Bayonneta 2 will be launched on Summer in Japan, If I am not mistaken summer in Japan is from June to September or something like that.

I just think that NIntendo lost a good chance to show more love for Wii U, one or two teaser would be nice.

Lets wait for the next Direct, and I am not considering the DK : TF direct that should be soon.

Bayonetta Wii U edtion, would be nice.

X and Bayonetta 2 look very good. Mario Kart was all cutscenes so I can't judge. I hope they show more live gameplay soon. The new DK trailer looks fantastic. Smash 4 looks good. I'm disappointed Hyrule Warriors was a no show. GBA games finally though!

Good direct overall.

They probably will show it in the next Direct. Given the attention the game got, I'm sure they want to show a fairly stable and nice looking build next

No train crashed here. If none of these games(including Mario Kart 8) were enough to hold your attention for a few moments, you're looking at the wrong system.

I'm playing it (Xenoblade) and I'm still disappointed.
This is going to be very hard to spin to others.

Not spinning anything. Xenoblade's combat isn't the best. It can be good at times, but it's mostly a means to an end. My point is that people are acting like they didn't know X's combat would look like this, even though it was obvious from the first trailer that it was going to expand on what Xenoblade did.

Nintendo should be considering launching ports of games like Mario Kart 8 and Smash with their next system, as though they were new. It's a shame that they're relegated to Wii U level sales like 3D World.

I'm fairly concerned that is as nice looking as it's going to get. The other games in that series aren't the best visually. I'd love to be proven wrong, very much so.

Depends on how much Nintendo is actually involved in development I guess...

So Nintendo realise the Wii U is in trouble and needs saving. And what do they give us to save the console..? NES Remix 2 and GBA games for the VC.

You really couldn't make it up.

You would have thought that with bugger all games being released the first half of this year that they would have some more HD remakes ready to fill in a few huge gaps. They did Wind Waker HD in a few months. Why don't they do the same with Paper Mario TYD..? F-Zero..? Eternal Darkness..? Or approach third parties to do the same with a few classics..?

Iwata has really lost the plot if he thinks NES Remix 2 and GBA games are going to save the console.

I suspect Nintendo is already shifting resources to Wii U's successor. Compare 3DS initial sales and Nintendo's response to Wii U sales and Nintendo's response. Nintendo is going to ride it out and try and not let Wii U wreck the company and try again as soon as they can IMO.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Then they need to calm the fuck down lol.

Video games, enthusiasts or not, it's just video games.

yea. agreed. it's not your livilhood. well, it's mine, but yea. that's just some personal frustration while choosing to ignore reality.

if I look at my game-fan-only side, I wouldn't be that frustrated from Nintendo. their own output has be great! I've had so much fun with pikmin 3 and lego city and super mario 3d world. mario kart looks amazing, donkey looks fun, smash will be 100 hours of fun for me. i completely understand frustration, but most of that is self induced in my opinion.

nintendo is fine. the wii u is fucked, but hey good games are still coming!

Agreed. 3DS/WiiU gen has peaked and is now in the winding down process, while they're ramping up the new era of Nintendo. The focus will be on QoL followed by a single successor to 3DS/WiiU.

The Wii Sports and Brain Age line of games will continue on QoL, and Nintendo will shift some of the traditional resources away so we'll end up with something like 75% of the 3DS/WiiU output, but on one platform which will make its library healthier and more diverse than any of the two current systems.

Really? IMO Nintendo's first party output compared to previous systems is incredibly lacking.

Looking at today's direct, I get the feeling this is the case. They'll do what they can for the Wii U, but they're not going to be wasting a lot of resources on it. They'll get their next system out as soon as they can, but the Wii U itself is screwed.

It was a good direct, as far as directs go, but obviously it did absolutely nothing to convince anyone of anything that they didn't already believe.

I knew people predicting big things for this were crazy. Yes, it should have been stuffed full of big things to try to get people excited about the Wii U. But it was never going to be.

If Mario Kart 8 isn't enough to save the Wii U... well, you know. nothing is. I mean, it miiiiight be. But I doubt it.

that seems like a very rational thing to take away from this direct.

Nintendo's WiiU output is the best its been for a Nintendo console in years, imo. I agree with that poster. I'm already going to own more WiiU games than I did for the Wii in a few short months. Nintendo has been on fire for me.

All the Wii U titles they had shown in this direct look great and super polished to me. The lack of any new game announcements (Nes Remix 2 not withstanding) has me concerned however. I wonder if they'll be dick enough to move the new Zelda over to the next console even.

Also, I wish they'd just announce Majora's Mask 3D already.

Great Direct IMO.

Highlights for me #1 MK8 and #2 DKC TF #3 Bayo2 #4 X

I am betting on E3, they need to save for that or we will be really disappointed then.

i need to get W101, Pikmin 3, DKC TF, Deus Ex, Batmans, AC 4 and the Lego Games, maybe NFSMWU.

Project Cars is still coming right?

True, but I'll take quality over quantity any day.

I bought every Nintendo console at release.... but the next cosole? Nope! This shit is too much. I've lost faith. I have no idea how Nintendo want to turn things around.

Wouldn't surprise me. I always viewed the Wii U as a 5-year console -- like I view all Nintendo consoles -- they last 6 if things go great (Wii) -- 4 if things go poor. The Wii U will be a poor showing so holiday 2016 is probably reasonable for their next non-QoL platform, that means E3 2015 will be the time to talk next-gen for Nintendo. And if that's that case, you definitely have to be gearing up for it as you don't want a slow start again.

What I think is interesting is the 3DS. We've heard Nintendo already talk about being like iOS next time and having their handheld and console be brothers. That lead to people talking about having games tied to an account and being able to play the same Nintendo games on your handheld and console. Well, 2016 will probably be near the time for a handheld successor as well -- which has given me the thought that they could actually show, and possibly even release their console and handheld at the same time if they play the same games.

Basically, you can buy a Nintendo Portable Edition or Nintendo Home Edition in 2016 depending on if you like gaming on the road or prefer a console that can make the games look a little better on a big screen. That way the shared library could mean a good launch lineup and consistent support, as well as pleasing handheld gamers (mostly Japan) and console gamers (mostly western fans). Like Today's ND was okay as far as Nintendo games were concerned the problem was the Wii U seemed neglected (at least as far as release dates were concerned). If the console and handheld were just based off your Nintendo ID like Iwata talked about and they came out together, there would never be any talk of one side getting neglected again. It really makes me wonder if they have some plan like that.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Are you serious???
Remove games NOT releasing by spring from the WiiU games showed today(ie. Bayonetta 2/ X). Donkey Kong & Mario Kart 8 were delayed from last year.

So we have a compilation rom hack and GBA games (Who ever decided to put GBA games on WiiU instead of 3DS need a head-check).

Everything here is true, but that "compilation rom hack" is the sequel to one of the best games released in the past 6 months.

Its close, but I'm overall having more fun with the Wii U in its first year than I did with the Wii. Regardless of where the software comes from, it really has built itself to be a great complimentary console.

Well, on the bright side, at least they're not scooping their E3 presentation with their first Direct of the year like they did last January. There's going to be way more new announcements at their press conference this year.

Right?

Right..?

Agreed, but they said Zelda was coming. It'd be pretty shitty if we have to wait for the next console cycle to get it. I know a new Metroid, Star Fox, and/or F-Zero are pretty much out of the question at this point, but they have to at least release the games that have already been confirmed.
