Winter-Spring 2014 Anime |OT3| People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time

So basically what you're saying is that not having an OT will make people try out shows they wouldn't normally have tried in the first place?

We should do this more often!

The impressions in this thread do a good enough job of raising awareness of shows that might be worth watching without having to gamble blindly on some of the really bad shows out there.

Those impressions don't come out of nowhere. Let's pay our respects to the heroes who go where no anime fan has gone before.

I'm just curious because, you seemed to have watched the first episode of that series and, despite that, did you still have some hope that the second would be better somehow? I lasted about 6 minutes into the first episode before I had to turn it off.

You know what kept me going?

Hope.

Hope that Saber-clone could save the anime.

Hope that the bad boy lead wouldn't fall into harem tropes and just be likable.

Hope that the funny looking dragon races would continue with a How To Train Your Moe Dragon premise in the works.

Hope that whenever his dragon appeared as a loli that she would at least not be Zero No Tsukaima.

Hope that when she started to act tsundere that she would at least not call the lead a dog like in Zero no Tsukaima.

Hope that she wasn't an Ojou-sama.

Hope that Saber-clone would at least keep her hair when she didn't.

Hope that the anime wouldn't have pantsu.

Hope that the little girl didn't have to be naked and there'd be hilarious misunderstandings about why the girl is naked SO HILARIOUS-SAN.

Hope the president of the fucking school wouldn't be another anime trope.

Hope that the gun in my drawer was still there.

Hope that it was loaded.

Hope the pain would go away. FUCK. THE PAIN. AWAY.

H3YxSNW.gif

Hope that tears would cleanse my soul. But hope is relative to time. And hope is mechanical. Its gears are rusted. The warmth is gone.

RIP Hope.

Time to head to bed lol

Mekaku guy needs to get a life.

Does the Kana Asumi AI robot internet waifu thing not having feet symbolize a not-so-hidden urge from the fanbase to cripple and thus cut off any possibility of their waifu leaving them, as in, their fear of real human beings--and freedom exhibited by such people--manifested as this cutely voiced, all too crippled, explicitly not-real totemic fetish that calls them 'master' and dotes and caters to their needs.

There's no need for it to be symbolic when she's already chained to him as a program. Also, feet are either creepy, gross, or fetish material depending on who you ask, best to remove them entirely!

Its funny. Reading the manga I never picked up on that, but it was very on the nose wit this episode. Dunno if that's simply because of the colour art and the voice work or whether the characterisation is a bit different.

You can definitely find stuff that's even worse this season.

If we include non LN adaptation, yeah, Dragonar academy is not the worst anime for this season. i found that Dragonar academy seem lacking when compared to other LN adaptation for this season, but that just me. and it's only from 1st episode, unless Dragonar goes guillotine gorilla or Mami'd in later episode, i might change my mind :p

This show would be so much better if they would just kill off Tohka. Points to Origami for being DTF in the women's bathroom of all places.

but Tohka is a sweetheart :(
Leave her be cher.

Does anyone watch stuff like Elemental Gelade or Solty rei? I cant be the only one.

You know, every time I think I'm going to be able to predict if someone is or isn't going to like a show based on their past impressions/opinions of similar ones, I seem to get it wrong.

I'd be a terrible recommendation engine. Either that or I'm just overly forgetful of what people's prior tastes actually are.

I think it's just really difficult to pin down precisely what a specific person will or will not like.

For all the discussion we have, derisive or otherwise, compartmentalizing our entertainment and trying to slot everything into convenient and straightforward categories in practice it's never remotely that simple.

Mekaku City Actors - 01

The greatness that is SHAFT continues. I don't know what is going on but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Easily my favorite first episode of the spring season so far.

Also, just finished Madoka over the last two days. Great show and with that I have now officially seen every SHAFT TV series and animated movies. My favorite animation studio by a wide margin.

'Moe Latro' aside, this was a very sexy sentence. Gotta watch this...
The LATRO bit on the other hand reminds me I need to get around to reading through that, been awhile since I read Gene Wolfe.

Then maybe I'll check out this anime if it turns out good.

... And I think I might be enjoying JoJo Battle Tendency way more than Phantom Blood. Only three episodes in so far though.

I think Dragonar is even worse than Black Bullet and Mahouka and those are already bad. And Dragonar doesen't even look good.

But those aren't the worst shows of the season. You need to look at Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara, No Game No Life, and even Brynhildr, Blade and Soul, and Akuma no Riddle. Most of those are worse than Dragonar. There is so much dreadful stuff this season that a generic harem like Dragonar doesn't stand out.

I actually enjoyed those shows :(
Especialy Akuma no Riddle and Brynhildr. I think that those two can become great.

Well I'd disagree on those cases mostly. And overall I'd say its more mediocre than dreadful. But then dreadful amongst what I even try is rare. Ghost rapist from last season being one.

All of reason that you want from watching sport anime, Shounen as fuck.. Hell yeah.

That substitution scene have all kind of feels, this series did really good job making you want to root all the player and the team.. Its feel pretty damn satisfying when the team getting the momentum even if this only a fiction.

But why the hell we getting an recap episode next week in the heat of match, fuck.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders 02

It's amazing how much better this is compared to the OVAs. Kakyoin vs. Jotaro fight felt far more satisfying. I actually liked the OP for part 3 too. Sure it isn't as good as the previous two, but I feel like it's perfect for the type of story Stardust Crusaders is aiming for. Also glad to see that Kakyoin stand looks more humanoid this time around.

It really is a bad time for a recap episode. Mid-game, right after a pitching change cliffhanger, really?

no worries. A lot of times people like my recommendations but sometimes I whiff and they loathe it. Theres no guarantee someone likes what you suggest.

She's pretty much my reason for watching. Now voting Kurumi off the island, I'd be all for that.

Whoaaaaaah. Hang on now...
Kurumi is a goddess, sir.

You're saying this like the other light novel adaptations are any good. I don't know what is or isn't an adaptation, but there's at least a handful of shows that are worse than Dragonar. Fuuun Ishin Dai☆Shogun is a massive turd that carved out its own special gutter to sit in apart from everything else this season.

I don't understand why they didn't just do it before/after tournament opening ceremony if want making recap episode, why in the middle of frigging game.. Zeus.

This is not unusual.
Yeah, before the first anime thread got re-railed I noticed that a lot of people put it near the bottom when doing rankings. It's still enjoyable, but I can definitely see what Battle Tendency got ranked higher frequently just because of Joseph.

And the Gintama comment related to him makes me wonder if it's even worth trying to get into that anime at this point, and how it compares to the manga. More often than not I see it ends up going that long and would rather stick with the manga, but if the anime's actually one of the better adaptions maybe I'll pick at it afterall.

EDIT: I also wonder if Chaika will be worth going through in the end. Those are not good early impressions, but knowing it's from the same creator AND animation staff as Scrapped Princess has my interest.

I just can't.

It's a shame, because it seems like Madhouse is actually doing a decent job of things. The first part may be slow-paced or inefficient, but I like the feeling of the school's airy blues and whites, and the fight in the dojo is undeniably excellent. There's very little cheating in terms of showing what's happening, and even the little way they keep it going in the background during Miyuki's conversation with the teacher is clever. If the material were decent I'd at least stick around for a while.

The problem is that the story is standard light novel dreck, down to the overpowered "stoic" protagonist, the absurd discrimination that goes almost without comment in the school, and particularly Miyuki, who I absolutely can't stand. Even if they weren't siblings, she'd still represent all the things I hate about this kind of story.

Personally, unless a tale sweeps me off my feet with a grand display of sincerity, absurdity, and hot-blooded machismo (see: Jojo, Ben-to, Giant Robo), I like it when stories are about people. They can be in any kind of world, and we can learn a lot from the setting, but the characters are what take us from a story's beginning to its end, and I feel I can draw more from tales about characters that act like humans than not. Humans are complicated, sometimes contradictory, subtle, imperfect, and interesting. When I watch how characters in a good story act in situations I've never experienced, I learn a little more about the world. They don't waste my time.

In stories like Mahouka, I don't feel like I'm dealing with people. The characters are flat types, and they exist so someone can draw them and sell merchandise with their face on it. The stories have complicated and unusual settings so Cool Things can happen to the Awesome Protagonist that men want to be and girls want to be with. But those cool things don't matter because nothing in the entire world of the story has anything to do with how humans act.

Like, what the hell is with Miyuki? Even though her brother is the picture of stoic apathy, she's like a whimpering child whenever he's around, hanging off his every word for scraps of affection, immediately deferring to anything he says. That's not love; it's subservience. Are we expected to believe her prologue justifies it? It's creepy, and it's just the worst example of how every single one-note character in this episode behaves.

Not for me. I'm done.

Edit: How do I make an image smaller? :(

If you're a better person than I am, you resize them in the image editor of your choice before uploading, but I just stick them inside quote tags.

It hurts to exclude any of those cuties. Tsunako is such a genius.

I love all the character designs in the show, and is probably why I'm watching it, but I just wish some of the characters could get a better role then turning into a sidekick character.

Looks like I win this time, thanks for the help though. :)
