I could be wrong, but if Uplay does unlock, it's the first digital system that separates retail keys and digital keys from the same SKU.

After reading through this thread, we are concerned considering that the street date for this game is in two days in the US, three days elsewhere (and tomorrow night for Origin). I'm not going to single anyone out at this point, but the sheer volume of people who claim to have purchased the physical version of the PC release early is suspicious enough that I am going to ask everyone who has posted their own screenshots and performance impressions to please post photographic evidence of ownership of the game.

Please do not continue to post impressions in this thread before doing so.

This was my initial thought, but I wanted to give people the benefit of the doubt since they claimed earlier in the thread that physical copies worked. It struck me as odd. I would really like confirmation on this.

It's fairly obvious from the results in this thread that some sort of update (program or driver) is necessary for this game to function properly. I don't think Ubisoft would be activating any keys at this time.

For both Far Cry 3 and AC4, I was able to play as soon as I got my retail copy (Thursday and Wednesday respectively). I'm not sure if that's because it had already unlocked else where though. As both of those came out on a Tuesday in the US but Friday in the UK.
