2014 Israel-Gaza Conflict [UN: 1,525+ Palestinian dead, mostly civilian; 66 Israeli]

Gaza City (CNN) -- Hundreds of Palestinians fled in panic into Gaza City on Sunday as Israeli troops focused their firepower on the nearby town of Shaja'ia. The shelling and bombing killed at least 40 people, a Gaza hospital spokesman said.

More bodies lay in the streets under gashes blasted into apartment buildings, said people who had escaped the violence, as the shelling continued.

Aljazeera claims the dead are up to around 100.

Saw a video of a cameraman walking around some houses surrounded by dead bodies of women and children. Really can't believe that people find this an acceptable way of dealing with Hamas.

It's like a spiral of death, every iteration a little more brutal and uncaring. Unless the world somehow intervenes, the brutality will eventually reach a tipping point and there will be ethnic cleansing.

I usually don't post in these topics to keep from getting to worked up with Isreali defenders but this is too much.

I won't post it but the images coming out of this massacre are heart wrenching. Ambulances bombed, women and children dead and scattered in the street like they were just trying to escape. There are reports that even journalists were killed. This is indefensible, a modern army indescriminant in killing civilians. These are clear war crimes in plain sight that the world will ignore.

We don't use the m-word when talking about Israel. Don't you understand that they are defending themselves and these things happen?

As an addendum to my last post, I think this has crossed the line to ethnic cleansing. Palestinians mass murdered for no other reason than being Palestinians.

while the leaders in turkey, Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi sit back and do nothing.

the military power is clearly there the but leadership are a bunch of cowards.

Israel commit these massacres as they know there will be no come back. Instead the Arab countries are Israel's first line of defense.

Aish Ijla, aged 38, whose leg was broken by shrapnel, said: "We live very close to the border. When the shells started we couldn't leave the house. It is two storeys. The shells were hitting the upper floor so we all moved downstairs. There were 30 of us in the house. Then the shrapnel started hitting the door.

"It was quiet for a moment and we decided to run. But as we were on the road a shell landed near me, breaking my leg. I told the family to go on with out me and carried on going for a little bit and stopping then going on. Eventually an ambulance reached me after two hours."

I've removed anyone from my life who thinks that this is remotely acceptable. There's no justification for murdering innocent people.

The leaders of the world just shrug their shoulders as evil unfolds.

While on the one hand I agree, and note that America/England/Russia are run by blithering idiots...

At any given time, we're two steps from another full blown World War. And given America/England's pathetic track record at trying to solve wars between other nations, the last thing I want is them getting involved. Because when they do either they get their asses kicked, or they 'save the day' and then leave things even worse than they were originally.

I mean... the problem is there's no deterrant except for war. And even then that just breeds resentment that builds until the cycle starts again.

It seems the sad truth is that the only way to stop things like this is for countries to stop having figurative dick-measuring contests and bullying each other. But they have to decide that. And currently no one wants to because then they won't be the toughest guy in the playground anymore.

I just don't understand this. Unless you assume that EVERYONE in Gaza (women and children included) are firing rockets, why punish them all for the actions of a few?

Israel is simply showing their true intentions, and it's absolutely disgusting.

How anyone can defend them is beyond me.

This is not a conflict of equals. Ball is firmly in Israel's court to end this. But they won't, they like things this way.

What can I say that hasn't been said.

Absolutely despicable. I really do hope that the international community responds to what's happening.

I can't imagine how horrible it must feel to see your people being murdered around you and it feeling like the world is on the side of the killers.

Sometimes my reaction to the Israel/Palestine conflict is pretty much that.

It's like we live in an alternate world with different rules and standards for Israel. If stuff like this would happen in some dirt poor, undemocratic, sub-saharan country without functioning government, I would still flinch, but (sorry if this sounds harsh) I would be able to place the events, I'd be able to put it in context. With Israel however, my mind is just always full of fuck. Rich, democratic country, close ties to the Western world, a government that could be held accountable for wrong doings, ... Yet here we are: no actions, sanctions or condemnation. "Just another day in the Israel/Palestine conflict..."

the amount of denial from my israeli relatives i see on facebook about this is truly astonishing. they say there is tremendous bias against israel in the media, especially from the bbc (who apparently didn't cover the pro-palestine rally right on their doorstep...), but all i hear when i put on the news are very stark death toll numbers and little else.

Please tell me there are at least some vocal opponents of the war amongst Israelis.

I met this old Israeli dude once, he'd become expat because he couldn't take it anymore. He felt really guilty and kept saying how sorry he was for the things done in his name. Poor dude.

I feel that this is very apt.

I think you're quoting one, lol.

Present company excluded of course.

Perhaps a better question: how vocal and how numerous is the opposition to these atrocities within the Israeli population? There are some despicable scum who cheer on the war, but I'd like to know that there are equally lots of people who are aghast at this weeks events.

Me and my friends were at a demo yesterday at Habima square. It is getting problematic though, as Haggai Matar wrote at +972 at the last big demo: http://972mag.com/the-night-it-became-dangerous-to-demonstrate-in-tel-aviv/93524/

Holy shit. Thanks for the response and I hope you guys can gain some more support.

Actually if the citizens in countries whose tax dollars help pay for all the weaponry being used to kill so many civilians made their voices heard, things would change.

I wish Obama would grow some balls and tell Netanyahu to stop this shit or lose all aid but you know why we won't? Folks would be running over themselves to attack him as anti-semetic and Democrats would be leading the charge.

Terrible. And I can also picture in my head Israelis cheering like they did for the missile launch that one time recently
