One step forward, two steps back. So many reused content :\

That's true, Xillia 1 was rushed as hell and then Xillia 2 reused the assets from the first game. That's by far the worst part about Xillia 2. The setting was a lot more interesting though, at least from what Zestiria's setting looks like from these trailers. Hopefully this game doesn't end up being rushed, it would be nice to play another Tales game that feels like a finished product.

it's like after Vesperia, they are aggressively trying to do everything they can stylistically to make me not like Tales anymore. Other than the more dynamic cinematography, this just screams generic.

At least it's only generic and not as offensively terrible looking as Xillia, but I also vastly prefer ,,Team Symphonia"-era...

Go Shiina is indeed in the credits, even in the 4th Story Trailer. So people can rejoice :p

I edited my post earlier to reflect I actually just preordered the LaLaBit Market Limited Edition, which includes:
- the game
- special box
- a novel
- the DLC
- one of the four 8-bit character straps
- 6 bookmarks
- the charm of Sorey's sword
- 4 little figurines of some of the characters

Bring on January 22nd!

Am I the only one who thought Xillia was the last straw? I can replay Symphonia all day, Abyss has some hit or miss stuff but it's still good, stuck with these series through thick and thin with Graces having absolute garbage story but the best progression system ever, but something about Xillia just felt disgusting to me, just soulless, and I don't know why.
Edit Sorry for being a downer lol
I really hope this game can get me back into tales.

I think going down the cel-shaded route would have been better in the long run versus the route they're going down now where there seems to be a distinct lack of shading on the characters and environments.

Just look at games like Guilty Gear Xrd and the Naruto Storm games that make heavy use of this. Stylized shading and stylized characters are just something that go together perfectly.

Looks a lot more visually appealing then games that skimp on it entirely like Xillia and now Zestiria.

I'll still buy the game but I'm hoping this is something they change their minds on in the future.

Your Graces f comments not withstanding, I'm pretty much with you. Outside of Alvin I didn't like any of the character in Xillia. Story was okay and dungeon design was tedious and boring. Thank God for that combat. Xillia 2 was like a joke. SO many re-used assets and artificially padding out the game with the debt pay back thing. Really didn't enjoy Xillia 2 very much.

I'm willing to give Zestiria a try though. Although it looks like a generic Knights & Dragons kind of tale
(pun intended)
I'm okay with this. Kind of a "back to basics" in a way. Character designs look really cool as well. I'm digging the more "open world" design and the tweaks to combat. We'll see how it turns out though.

Go Shiina? If I remember my last avatar was a Battle Toads guy I think.

ups, seems like you got something wrong:
I just quoted your avatar because the music is as monotonous as every tales game before and I was pretty shocked to hear that someone likes it. That's where your shocking avatar pic comes into play :)

Then I said that I absolutely love the soundtrack which Go Shiina did for ToL and I wish he would do another one...

Apparently Edna and Dezel's Hi-Ougis (Mystic Artes) are mentioned in this week's issue of Famitsu.

According to user ExeForce87 on Twitter, Edna's is "Venerate Mine", while Dezel's Hi-Ougi is "Brutality Whip".

Also a better look at Roze, the latest character that was just revealed a while ago

Can't show the Mystic Arte cut-ins as they are not up on Famitsu's main website but boy...cut-in image for Edna's Mystic Arte is looking really cute.

You guys should be able to expect updates from Abyssal Chronicles soon on their Twitter/Facebook page on some of the latest updates.

Seeing all the character together made me realize the character design in this really stands out as a bad thing.

I mean, the Rose character would easily be confused with an NPC in any other game of the series. Not that big of a deal, but still.

Even Mr. Walking Shirtless Scene himself?

I don't like that they use 3 different designers for the same game. It doesn't feel as consistent as in the older ones. I didn't like it in Xillia and I don't like it here.

Xillia 2 designs were a huge improvement over the original. Especially Milla's, but that was not a hard job.

One step forward, two steps back. So many reused content :

It's still an awesome game but god, those reused assets were bad and the dungeon design was terrible.

Battle system, characters and the story are where the game shines.

The original Xillia had some beautiful cities like Fenmont, Xian Du and Nia Khera. Really liked them.

I hope there's a full battle trailer too, that's how things went for other Tales games at TGS.

And if Roze isn't playable I'm going to be very upset.

I like the music. :)

Like Sorey and Alicia's design.

Like the black dragon.

Yeah, I'm game. Looking forward to this. Probably going to import this time.

In one of the Famitsu scans there's an anime pic of the party and Zaveid is there. He's totally playable.

Huh, no way. Have you taken a look at some of the older Tales designs?

Wow. That was a bad trailer. wut. This really really feels like a hella rushed game. Just saying.

How did you get that impression?

Honestly more hyped for this than Xillia. Wished they showed more gameplay though and the graphics are disappointing.

It doesn't look any worse than Xillia (character models look better) and I think that looks good. Playing Xillia 2 now and the IQ is rather good; both Zestiria and Xillia suffered from bad images. I think Zestiria will look fine when played for the most part.

Should I pre-order or wait for the PS4 announcement of the game?
I'm on the same boat as you. I really want to pre-order this but if there's going to be a PS4 port, I rather get it for the ps4. Plus, I don't really want to buy a new PS3 since mine ylod a few months ago.

Just come out on PS4 and I'm game. Don't really care about (IMO) minor things like character design and perceived generic-ness of the setting as long as it isn't terribad.

All I really want is a quick and dirty PS4 port to fix up the battle framerate.

The game looks great, but I can't stop seeing Link [Skyward Sword] in the main male character. Something about their faces seem so similar to me...

I'm really excited for this one, though. Here's hoping we get it over in NA at/near the Japanese release.

Can't agree more. Look at tales of vesperia, hold up much better than any tales series.
If they make it look something like Zelda WiiU, I'll be there day zero.

Hmmmm, I feel less willing to import this right now. Not sure why, probably all the info Bamco's been pumping out isn't really making me all that hyped for this game.

Also seeing that you only get one charm instead of all four means I'll probably get someone I don't want so meh ~_~

Will probably at least get the localized version next year though.

You have to preorder to get the Mystic Artes? How awful. DLC really hit Tales of hard. At first we got costumes that used to be free in the main game being offered as DLC and now even some skills are preorder content :(

That's another thing that worries me too. Like, how bad is it going to get in the future? I already hated seeing the costume system get ruined by overpriced DLC so you can imagine I'm not happy about the same happening to artes.

Looks great. However, they really need to bring the game to PS4 for the west. Xillia 2's sales pretty much proves that the PS3 userbase is dropping like flies.

Falk

that puzzling face
Just look at games like Guilty Gear Xrd

Guilty Gear Xrd is in a class on its own and did so much shit that's only possible with a fixed camera and a very controlled environment (different eye sizes for closeups vs normal shots, 'fake' optimized lighting direction per character model based on view angle, etc etc etc) but yes I agree, a more stylized look would probably have benefitted Xillia.

Tales for PS4 cant come soon enough. So tired of the last-gen graphics.

Still a must buy for PS3.

I really don't think it's the PS3's fault the games are so plain and I don't think the PS4 will make things better. I think another dev just needs to get their hand on the reins, working with the Tales teams. Tales of Fire Emblem or Tales of Uncharted.

Tales games always had been on a budget, especially assets wise. Seeing that this stays the same even now that development (and staff) was moved in-house tells me they'll never do a bigger budget Tales game since they consider it part of the series' success formula.

Yeah, the western userbase moves to next-gen much faster.
The Western Tales base is also much smaller than the Japanese so the latter decides where it moves.

Absolutely agreed. Costume hunting was one of the things that made side quests and second playthroughs so fun in the old Tales games.

Now actual skills are being cut out and sold separately? Come on. Stop killing my enthusiasm, Namco.

Problem is that by next year, I wouldn't be surprised if the Western release of Zestria would sell worse than Xillia 2 on its opening month and since Namco does want to push the series to the west, it would be their best interest to do the up port.

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony tried to make it happen like what they did for Persona 5, but it's probably too late for Zestria.

They're not though. These are additional fan service skills that we haven't seen added in a tales game this way before. The cast's regular hi ougi skills are still in the base game.

I hope they make a Zestiria 2 too just to see how low they can go with the production of these things. ToX2 was the laziest 'sequel' I've ever seen.

this was a new engine? please...

This looks good and like I'll enjoy it but I can't justify the purchase just yet as I am half way through Vesperia and Abyss and I still have Symphonia Chronicles, Graces f and Xillia 1 and 2 sealed. That backlog.

Too expensive. They'll keep doing localizations of what exists. Should one do really bad they'll likely become picky with future localizations again. Tales going PS4 anytime soon is far from a given looking at its sales in Japan, the handheld bridges are all burned and Wii U is equally unlikely at this point even though surpassing PS4 plenty, that leaves only PS3 for the time being.

Fair point. Still disappointing, since it's something past Tales would have had you quest for.

Tragic victim of fan death
I hope Fate/Stay Night is a split cour show because at this rate, I might have to skip out on ufotable next year. Sad day.

I definitely miss the days when tales games had more work and thought put into them in terms of making a quality, completed product and weren't annual/biennial releases.

Trailer was ok, seemed as Talesy as ever, for better or worse. The visuals are a little less bland than Xillia, but I'm hoping they use the PS4 as a big comeback for cel-shading...

Wish they'd stall less at showing more of the combat and sub systems. Compared to previous games it feels like a very large portion of their coverage and footage is of the world and characters and some of it is kinda interesting, but it's not really what sells me on a Tales game... I suppose TGS will mark the beginning of them showing more gameplay-oriented stuff though.

I think those who really want a PS4 version may want to wait and see what their holiday/winter 2015 release is. If it's anything like the past couple of years they're not going to jump from an all-new Tales game right to the next all-new Tales, there'll be a year or two of lower budget filler projects. So they might do a Zestiria 2 or PS4 port or whatever for late 2015/early 2016. Worst case scenario you just have to get the game on PS3 at a sale price. :p

Let's just hope they don't pull a Sega when Zestria sells worse than Xillia 2 on its opening month in US then.
