Tales of Symphonia Unisonant Pack announced for PS3 [Screens/Videos in OP]

The PS2 version is 30 FPS compared to the GC version's 60 FPS.

It'll probably be noticeable if you've played ToS GC already, but if you haven't then maybe not too much.

Yeah I knew about that I played both versions. My surprise was more about how the PS3 version takes after the lackluster PS2 port from a technical standpoint. What in the flying fuck.

Wait, it runs at 720p with no AA and at 30 FPS? Did they have a team of trained monkeys working on this? Not particularly well-trained ones, mind you.

I'm really glad to not care about 30/60fps :D

I'm having a blast playing it so I don't really care about the framerate in battle if I don't see any slowdowns.
Only place with hiccups is the worldmap, when you're on foot. (note: only in Symphonia 1 of course)

And so, I'm only ONE title away from the platinum! Finish the Rodyle fight with party at max lv35.
Getting 1.000.000 chips at the casino is an ENORMOUS chore. Glad I don't have to to that ever again >_>
ToS2 was super easy to platinum (~118h). ToS1 is not hard but really time-consuming (138hours and still need one last playthrough)

I don't think they cared.

If this was really how they were going to treat one of their more profitable and popular games in the series for its 10th anniversary, along with not even bothering to revamp some sections of the game--battle system included--in an R sense, then why even bother?

I'm legitimately surprised it's only 30fps. The GCN version was 60!

This would have been ideal. Seems like they are just trying to cash in without putting in the effort to make it worth it.

Imagine if they released Tales of Destiny R as just a copy-paste of the PS1 version.

That's basically what's happening here it seems.

B-b-b-but cameo costumes!

Honestly I'm not surprised how lazy this was. When the only things they were even showing off in Famitsu and such were cameo costumes and new hi-ougi cut-ins it kinda means there was nothing else new, lol.

I'm glad I checked this topic before dropping $100 for the Collector's Edition. Wish they could've gone with the Gamecube version. Oh well. More money for me to spend on other games, I guess. :\

Wait, Symphonia's 30FPS? I'd heard this was a lazy remaster, but come on. I'd have expected the framerate to be bumped up for this at the very least.

I mean, I'll still get it because English ToS PS2 content, but still, ugh.

Was the original 60 FPS on GameCube.

60 FPS with some slowdown with certain spells (Prism Stars Unison Attack and Cyclone come to mind) and of course if there's tons of spells on screen.

In attempt to look up more info about this, read some dumbass GameFAQs comments on how 30FPS is better because now stuff like Cyclone no longer suffers from slowdown. What. Not surprised at it because GameFAQs but what.

I was already disappointed with port. But now it's based of PS2 assets and running worse than what I had on Gamecube? Why?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. They should have just gone with a whole Symphonia R instead of this

these guys need to have a who's-shittier-at-HD-remasters-off with konami
Well, this sounds like it's merely matching parity with the PS2 version, sans HD and widescreen updates, so that's innately ahead of Konami.

Too bad that we have GC performance that could've and should've been met for battles at a minimum. Capcom didn't just make RE4 a port of the PS2 version on Wii at least, and even From's PC port of Dark Souls wasn't worse than consoles in performance when left at vanilla, just didn't take advantage of PC. Combined with how 60 FPS battles ARE standard for the series and they really should've met that much.

Somehow I still get the feeling that we're jumping the gun. Do we have footage of a 60fps-capable site? On youtube the PS3 version looks smoother than PS2, but that may be my wishful thinking playing tricks on me.

YouTube is usually capped at 30FPS. It looking smoother is probably due to better capture cards/image quality than the GC/PS2 days.

I am now DONE with Tales of Symphonia Unisonant Pack! Got my Gung-Ho title for Lloyd (super easy, I was surprised) thus giving me the second platinum I needed.

The most tedious trophy (and I REALLY mean it) was the 1.000.000 chips gained at the casino in ToS1. What a load of ***** >_< Any other trophy can't possibly compare, be it in ToS1 or ToS2.

Now a bit of rest until I get LR:FFXIII sometime this week.

So is the game at least smoother than the PS2 version or are the battles and overworld just as janky?

You must have the patience of a saint to plat this game

Not really, only took 119h (3 playthroughs) for ToS2 and 151+h (5 playthroughs) for ToS1 to platinum them. Only real boring and too long trophy is the 1.000.000 chips in ToS1. Everything else was fun or at least, not sleep-inducing.

Haven't played on PS2 so I can't provide a comparison. However, as I said multiple times already, the framerate doesn't dip in battles, or in cutscenes, or in towns/dungeons. Even on the overworld it doesn't "dip" per se, but there are real frequent and very quick (a few frames) stops while you're walking on land, but not in your ship (I guess because it loads monsters while on foot?)

It did this in the PS2 version as well. I'm sure there's not many frame drops since there wasn't any in the PS2 version, but is the framerate 30 or 60FPS?

I'm one of those guys that can't tell the difference. And I'm glad I can't, saves me from useless gripes. I only care about either slideshows or slooooooow mooooooooviiiiiiiing scenes ^^ It's fluid enough, it's good for me.

Very old news, but it appears it went unnoticed by most.
tri-Crescendo is updating their site more regularly now and lists this port as their work. I guess moving close to the NBGI HQ was worth it for them.

The visuals haven't aged well. The port seems a bit lazy thus far from the screens and video we have received. Still the first tos is a game I hold near and dear to me. Its good that people who didn't play it way back when it released, now have a chance, but they don't seem to have to made it double dip worthy imo

I pre-ordered both the Japanese and American version of this game.

To be honest, this, like many other HD remakes, makes me wish that a PC version of the game existed. I've already played this game in HD years beforehand via emulators. Buying this and other games is more of a novelty of collecting and supporting Tales products.

It's nice to own. Though it's not a particularly new experience.

I own the Japanese ps2 version and I'll be getting this version as well. I'll compare when I get mine.

I don't really care about the 30fps battles, they were fine on ps2, but I the world map on ps2 was absolute garbage and I'm hoping that's improved significantly on this version. Imagine a worse version of the tales of the abyss world map if you want an idea of what that was like. It felt super jarring coming off of Destiny 2 and Rebirth with their super smooth world maps.

Would have been nice for some AA. But having a low sharpness and sitting far from the TV will help with that. I'm just glad its in 720p and widescreen. I can finally play the game again with the image finally fitting the entire screen. I guess I'm one of the few still getting the CE in here it sounds like.

From what I hear the world map still has the stuttering when you rotate it from the PS2 version, no idea on the actual framerate.

I'd suggest not going back to the GC version if you've played that before then, it'll ruin it for you, there's no way you can't notice it after going back.

It kinda sucks more knowing this probably wasn't eating up much of the Tales staff's time and they still didn't (or couldn't) really work on any convenient refinements or improvements, particularly for people who've already played this...

Must have been given a really tight budget/deadline. It seems like the most they were able to do was make a functioning port of the PS2 version rather than an actually cleaned up and refined remaster of it.

I'm probably still getting it, but the combo system in the battles is a huge thing and is simillar to fighting games, going from 60 to 30 sucks. :p

I doubt there's anything that requires the link timing required for SFIV links or just frames. Of course 60fps makes for a smoother experience, but it's perfectly playable.

I will never understand shit like this. More power to you.
For some types of games this is a bigger deal, and Tales battle systems CAN be this kind of situation.

Plus it's a case where it just looks lazy and sloppy as hell when we have multiple current gen Tales games with 60 FPS battles and at much higher graphical quality, and I doubt Tales of Symphonia was doing something so esoteric on GC that it couldn't be done again here like Zone of the Enders did on PS2, and even that got addressed ultimately. If you have the original game, well, what IS the point in getting this?

The PS2 version did add a little bit more extra content and made a few improvements, technical issues aside.

It didn't add/change anything worth double-dipping over if you ask me, but I'm not a big Symphonia fan.

The few extras aren't worth it imo, even back in the PS2 days. :p A few mystic artes you'll never see outside of the end of the game and a few silly costumes isn't much to care about if you have the original GC version. I say the most interesting addition are the Unison Attacks since they're pretty badly distributed, and the PS2 exclusive ones give a few more to Sheena, Regal, and Presea at least.

It's playable, but it's just badly incompetent for Namco to release it in this state. I wouldn't suggest this HD port to anybody but a hardcore Tales of Symphonia fan (which means I'll get it since I'm used to the PS2 version despite my complaints) since the GC version is superior in performance.

Yeah, I knew about that and kind of figured that if people really wanted the best performance it wasn't going to be worth it, especially as they arguably could've just used the GC base and added on to that as they did with the DLC anyway.

Well, maybe they can patch better performance in. They've got a few months if it doesn't require a ZoE2-esque rebuild.

I've never played the PS2 version. Is this remaster really using PS2 assets and are the PS2 assets really a downgrade from the GC version?

Let's be honest, the majority of the fanbase doesn't care anyway. It's just highly disappointing when for an anniversary game you'd expect at minimal a port that's the best version of the game, not one based off a shitty port that ended up giving Tales of the Abyss later problems when they used the same engine, haha.
