Pachter Predicts: Xbox One outsold PS4 in September (dance, you puppets)

Solaire of Astora

Death by black JPN
I know your not talking to me but last gen there were points when it was looking pretty dire for the PS3 that I remember thinking if they just priced themselves out of the console space forever that MS would be a great 1 console.

And then you posted that on Gaf, where a MS employee saw the name for their next console.

Speaking of the whole ‘we don’t want a monopoly, arrogant Sony will go unchecked’ argument that gets been thrown around, the one that always annoys me is ‘we will end up with a $599 console again if Microsoft isn’t around’.

The reason the PS3 was $599/£425 wasn’t because Sony got so big headed after dominating with the PS2, it’s because the console actually cost something like $800 to make and so they wanted to cut their losses as much as possible.

Regardless of what some people ‘think’ about the price of the PS3, it’s a fact that it was a fantastic deal for what it was at the time. Yes it was expensive but it wasn’t a toy, it was an advance games console/media device that Sony was losing money on just to get it into peoples homes.

Yup. I even prefer them to make a state of the art console & make us pay a bit more for it.

The big question is will the actual NPD thread get more or less posts than this carnival of stupid? Can't believe we're almost at 3000 posts because of some throwaway prediction from Pachter, he's probably loving this. Looking forward to the next one he comes up with.

Remember when Pachter made the claim about VR not having any future like a week before facebook bought Oculus Rift for 2 billion? Good times.

Just because somebody put money behind doesn´t mean that it will take of.

After trying it for the first time this year I´m also cautious.

Having a games console + Bluray player at that price was a steal, it was the cheapest and one of the best Bluray players available for months. The worse part about the PS3 launch was the games catalogue, it was pretty dead for months, hence the it haz no games memes

Facebook buying Oculus doesn't mean there is a future in VR, just that Facebook thinks there is. Companies have bet on the wrong horse many times in the past. Until VR headsets start hitting on a consumer level and we see how the mass market responds, Patcher's prediction on that remain unproven.

I feel the same way conversely this gen.

So Bruce what's your take? Think Pachter is way off base then?

Today is the day boys and girls. If pachter is right, expect not being able to see Gaf for a while. If he's wrong, then expect the same.

Can the ps4 keep the God mode status?
Will the evil xbone win this battle?
Can we expect a meltdown?
Find out on the next episode of dragon ball z.

I'd actually go years not months.

The regular firmware patches kept it very relevant.

Many at the time not offering this

They changed plans not because Sony said "hey, let's do the exact opposite", but for the negative reception of those plans worldwide. This had nothing to do with direct competition, this was a move to cut rights and people reacted and the reaction went so far, that xbone suffers from this until today and will as long as this generation continues. This is what happens when in an age of social media the bad worth of mouth spread like a virus and is still in the minds of many people. They fucked it up all by themselves. And after that Sony reacted and this was the moment when the compeitor hit them the hardest. Not Sony made them ditch their original plans, it was the people. Those people were happy that Sony didn't follow Microsoft's steps and supported them. That's a different case here.

And no one is rooting for Microsoft to fail or anything. You guys are obviously bond personally to a company if it makes you that upset. I was with 360 for 8 years, but in the end I want the best value for my money and couldnt care less about what company is behind it.

You've got to be joking. There are plenty of people who are rooting for the XB1 to fail. All because they tried to sell people a product they found unacceptable.

It's like rooting for Coke to go out of business because you hated the New Coke they introduced in the 80's. Only New Coke never actually came out.

Great. So no Driveclub and GAF for me tonight. Terrific.

I still have hope for the majority of GAF users here, myself included. And LOL at that comparison, at least it's original.

So is Pachter under any legal or ethical responsibility to give his true opinion to anyone but his Wedbush Securities clients? Maybe his game is to bullshit the rest of the market so his clients can clean up. ;-)

Is Pachter generally wrong when he spews off the cuff on Gametrailers etc. ?

When the opinion comes via Wedbush is he more right than wrong ?

I can totally understand him saying rubbish on Gametrailers for chat or just being careless and clueless but through his job, I don't follow him enough to judge but do people have two wires crossed?

This makes perfect sense to me and is something I've suspected for a loonnng time.

He's wrong a lot.

I don't think this has anything to do with his job. Things might have changed but as far as i'm aware his role doesn't actually include advising on video games.

would you cry if Sony exited?

Sony has already proven they can handle being basically the only show in town with the PSX and PS2.

We have seen what Microsoft will attempt to do when they think they are the only show in town.

If Sony exited and left Microsoft to run rampant it would be grim times.

Yup, we got a $599 console precisely because there *was* competition, not because of the lack of it. Sony felt pressured to overspend and overachieve to meet their competition on as many fronts as possible. Not unlike what MS tried to do with the intro of the XBO this time around. Seems it's difficult in the console market to resist the allure of overextending the product as a means to face competition.

Eh it’s not really like that; New Coke was just a product that people didn’t like. They could buy a can/bottle, decide they hate it and move on without much fuss.

If Microsoft had their way with the XBO people would have been stuck with a device that took some of their rights away, restricted their gaming abilities through mandatory daily online checks, taken people’s ability away to sell/lend a physical game etc.

And remember the only reason this didn’t come out was because Microsoft saw their pre-order numbers and panicked because demand was nowhere near what they arrogantly assumed it would be.

I say arrogantly because we had rumours of their plans at least 6-9 months before announcement and 99% of people hated what they read. Some insisted that it wouldn’t happen or that MS would see the threads and realise people wouldn’t want it but what happened? They went along with their plans anyway and then wondered why no one wanted it, especially in comparison to the PS4.

I have owned an Xbox, 2 Xbox 360’s and I honestly wouldn’t feel a thing if MS left the console space. They did help usher along online gaming (After the Dreamcast and PS2 of course) and they have had some great games (Voodoo Vince was a favourite of mine) but they have probably done a lot more bad for the industry than good and I fear for the day they become dominant and shape the market how they want it because that is the day of no return.

My god...

I can't believe people actually think this way.

They're not perfect, I agree, but Xbox Live changed the way I play video games ever since it's conception (I'm not a PC gamer, or BIG into it at least).

The ps3 was expensive because they shoehorned in the blu-ray player expecting another ps2 whitewash, and the quick recuperation of the investment. It wasnt a gift from sony, and it was also there to help establish the format.... Which they have a big stake in.

We all saw what they wrote on their financials this year regarding blu-ray.

It shocks me reading some of the things that people write in regards to sony. Like they are an overgenerous uncle. Giving us 800 dollars worth of kit at a cutdown price...

I think that the ps3 is a prime example of a company that believes that it can do as it pleases. They found out the hardway, just like microsoft doing now with the xbone

So, you're okay with what ever they do because they created Xbox Live?

No, it's a lot more like hoping New Coke crashes and burns so they'll go back to making Coke Classic. Which is, thankfully, exactly what happened. I'm sure there are some who wish Microsoft ill but there are many more who yearn for a return to the days when there was J Allard-like vision for how to improve gaming.

Buying exclusivity from third parties doesn't improve gaming. Features that let me watch TV at the same time as my game don't improve gaming. Kinect, sadly, didn't improve gaming beyond enabling Dance Central. Your analogy fails on several levels.
