UK mulls over 18 age verification at porn sites, may check credit card, bank details

In a push for a more family-friendly Internet, the UK government is considering plans that could mean porn and adult websites will soon have to verify that visitors are over 18 years of age.

The legislation is being drawn up by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and would initially only affect UK-based websites. Similar to the verification tools already in use by gambling websites, the plans would also affect the owners of domains that sell guns or any other kind of adult content.

The process of checking users' ages would not necessarily just be an "Enter Your Date of Birth" box. The Sunday Times reports that other forms of verification could include checking credit card details, since these can only be issued to those over 18.

This already exists on sites like Betfred, whose terms and conditions state that the domain owners can ask users to provide a copy of an Ewallet statement, driver's license, passport or bank statement.

Given it only affects UK-based websites, I can't see this doing much. People will just go elsewhere. The only thing this will hurt is the UK porn industry (do we have one of those?).

The UK has had a boner over trying to control pornography consumption. It's an easy target because no one will be against it publicly and the amounts of evangelicals will be super happy about any type of restrictions.

It's like they -really- don't understand the internet. Are they going to force all porn sites that go through UK ISPs to conform? If not, it's a waste of time and money. If so, they are batshit insane, and it would still be impotent.

For a government that came in partially on a reversal of New Labours policy on civil liberties, the Tories are doing a bang up job of doing the opposite

I would think taking away peoples porn is going to be more of a vote-loser than making them carry around an ID card though.

It will eat up the debates in Governent about IT related bobbins, the papers cover it, it takes months to go through, the Government feel theyve been seen to be doing something, the evangelics feel theyre giving it to the sinners, it gets implemented and ultimately people who want to ignore it with a proxy click.

the single worst thing about all this is how every time I go to my local co op I see the daily mail with their front pages fully supporting all this shit in order to "protect the children". sod off, you cunts.

Anyhow. A simple google search leads anyone in the UK straight to the proxy bay. It's proof that this method does not ever work. But hey, the daily mail and co will ensure they put their full support behind it anyway.

That's how it works for German sites. At least I think so, I haven't been on a German site in ages.

I really hope they don't fuck it up and one day you cannot access international porn streaming sites from here. I'm kinda scared now thinking about that scenario...

Cameron's govt and their nanny state bullshit is pisding me off:

They force you to call your phone provider to remove the porn/extreme sites filter. Ironically I discovered this existed when I wasn't looking at porn or anything extreme.


They add new BBFC rules which have killed DVD special features and will fuck over small indie DVD labels.

These bullshit porn rules which will achieve nothing. Dave needs to keep his hands of my porn.
