Old enough i guess. ^^
Hint: It´s not about the Mhz

Pls show me a common PC from 1994 which could run something like Grand Turismo
Pls show me a common PC from 1996 which could run something like OoT
Pls show me a common PC from 2001 which could run something like Rogue Leader
Pls show me a common PC from 2005 which could run GTAV
Pls show me a common PC from 2014 with equal processing power than the new consoles. Oh wait there is. Actually already in 2012/13

Point is: Consoles were dedicated chips with immense R&D behind it. They were ahead. High end (PC) machines were always close behind or about to be released soon after. You had to wait to get similar performance as a 360 out of a PC card. Not for long, sure, but the price was immense. The new situation is the out of the shelf hardware from modern consoles. There is far less "learning" and "coding to the metal" than before. There was already better stuff avaible for cheap even before launch. And thats new. Unprecedented. And no "lol how old are you, hurr durr" will change that. ^^

It´s called having a job. Not bailing. Google it.

Eh, I'm sure the same claim was made around 2005, but the real good looking games came way later, as you said GTA, which was released in 2013. If you're trying to make this arguement you should wait untill 2020 when the PS4 has run it's course.

Can anyone explain why the relative power difference between consoles and PCs matters?

Nobody gives a fuck. Is it around £300, and will it play the latest CoD / FIFA? That's what matters.

Again, your not understanding...that was all they stocked! They sold out! They could never feasibly hit that number your suggesting without SE stocking that much to begin with in the first week
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am going to use the excuse that I am at work rather than be truthful and state that my reading comprehension are sometimes that of a 6 year old.

DAMN!

Some serious hating going on in here now.

What happened? The thread was civil yesterday.

Certain breeds of PC gamers are insecure that the majority of people just don't give a shit about 240fps and 8k resolution gaming or steam sales or whatever the hell, and just want to sit down and play games (which there are none of apparently!) on an affordable, plug and play console (which is as powerful as a box of tissues from 2005, news to me)

I'm actually in the starting stages of building my first gaming PC, I've already gotten a great help from the build a PC thread. Just some behavior I see displayed by certain posters here shitting on consoles while smugly plugging master-race gaming is so cringe worthy, it really paints a great community in a negative light, and almost discourages me from becoming part of it..

46m - Number of dedicated home and portable consoles sold in 2014*
1530m - Number of Smartphones and Tablets sold in 2014**

*Includes total shipments from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft for 2014.
**Includes all vendor smartphone and tablet shipments for 2014.

Really puts these console sales figures into perspective. 33x bigger market in 2014.

The success of the PS4 compared to previous consoles really is something else. It outsold the Wii in it's first 12 months and continues to show strong sell through into its second year. It's doing much better compared to last gen.

Last Gen Vs Current Gen! (Aligned launches)

CURRENT GEN

PS4 CY2013- 4.50m
PS4 CY2014- 15.40m
Total: 19.90m

XOne CY 2013- 3.90m
XOne CY 2014- ~7.60m+
Total: 11.50m-12.50m (based on estimates)

WiiU CY2012- 3.06m
WiiU CY2013- 2.80m
Total: 5.86m

Cumulative total: 37.25m - 38.25m

LAST GEN

PS3 CY2006- 1.86m
PS3 CY2007- 8.85m
Total: 10.71m

X360 CY2005- 1.50m
X360 CY2006- 8.90m
Total: 10.40m

Wii CY2006- 3.19m
Wii CY2007- 16.95m
Total: 20.14m

Cumulative total: 41.25m

The above shows total sell in for first two calender years for both last gen and current gen consoles. Hence why Xbox 360 starts in 2005 and PS3 starts in 2006.

What does it put into perspective? It's two industries that overlap in some areas, but not in others. It's a bit reductive to just throw numbers next to each other.

What perspective?

Everyone knows phones are more of a necessity than gaming consoles

Gaming is the most popular application category on Mobile. It's estimated that mobile revenues for gaming will exceed traditional console software revenues in 2016 or 2017.

PC gaming revenues have already exceeded console gaming revenues.

It puts into perspective how much bigger the opportunity is for gaming on Mobile over Console.

Impressive numbers, made all the more impressive when you consider they haven't released a Gran Turismo, Uncharted or God of War game yet.

Er...but why would anyone compare smartphone and tablet sales? They are far more general purpose than a gaming machine, especially phones. Its like asking how much one spends on food every month versus how much they spend on a new TV or something

The uses of a smartphone/tablet encompasses the Internet, phone calls, texting, email and photography. Your initial comparison is bizzare. Of course the market for smartphones is 33x larger. It's a multifaceted portable device versus a device dedicated to really one thing.

If you want to compre revenue of gaming, that might be interesting. But I don't find comparing hardware numbers to be particularly useful across sectors with massive differences.

Don't speak the truth like that.
There will be butthurt.
Imagine a world where Apple sells more mobile gaming consoles in 3 months than Nintendo sells over 3 years and I'd say, "Welcome to reality!"

Why not include PCs and laptops in your console/handheld tally while you're having fun. They tend to play the same types of games as the consoles.

Not really when you consider what types of games are most popular in mobile and PC gaming. Console gaming and numerous devs are attuned to a very different set of games.

Ok ok i get it haha.

My point is that total smartphone sales are growing each year, as is the gaming market on smartphones. (Note, the actual number of phones/tablets shipped exceeded 2.1 billion but I only put 1.5 billion as the other 0.6 billion was dumb/feature phones that don't really play games).

In terms of revenue, using data from 3 market research organisations, we can see that mobile revenue continues to grow at a very fast rate whilst console revenue growth has slowed and could potentially decline in 2016 onwards if projections come true. Mobile gaming revenue is set to exceed $35 billion in 2017 making it larger than the console gaming market.

I'm not saying console is dead. Console is still doing very well.

What I'm saying is that mobile is growing at such a fast rate that total revenues will exceed that of total console revenues soon.

But the console market is still doing well.

I don't remember having much trouble with the basic mechanics. I heard the AI gets harder later on, but that doesn't make the game as deep as something like Wipeout.

It's an absolute insult to compare the difficulty of DriveClub to Wipeout.

There is no way in hell you have seen somebody play Wipeout HD for the first time without assists and not have major problems. That's a lie.

I realise that this conversation is probably dead, but seriously?

I've been playing Wip#out since the first iteration on the PS1 and for my money that was the last genuinely hard to learn Wip3out - they substantially altered the mechanics for 2097 to make the handling a fuckton easier than the original, and that was the model they stuck with for all the subsequent games, with a couple of tweaks here and there (air braking being the main one).

As someone who has nearly 2 decades of playing Wip3out I completely agree that the comparison between the two games is valid.

I don't think it would really matter for how it's selling right now, but how much longer was the Wii on the Japanese market as compared to the PS4?

Yes and they still serve different needs. It's also worth noting where that growth actually is taking place vs more mature markets. The volume and scale of cellphone sales is what's driving growth vs the per user revenue.

Free Steam accounts don't compare well to consoles, nor do direct phone sales, even if gaming is the primary activity.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just direct comparisons don't really fly. Many would argue that the guy spending 3-400 bucks just to play games is a good bet vs the person that has a phone with 40 other different apps competing for money plus the bill.

Both are valid targets for different reasons and regions.
