Koji Igarashi's new game teased during MN9 panel at PAX?

You know, as a petty aside, the password in that images comes out to the same number of characters as the word 'Igarashi'. Of course, as it's all asterisks, this is purely nonsensical speculation.

Frankly, this would be a great opportunity to capitalize on the anti-Konami feelings right now. People may contribute to a Castlevania KS simply out of spite.

Couple of new tweets:

Look: The Q-Meister always protects her sources, but something's coming, and I hear it's much more gold than lead. Stay tuned!

Also, lol at this reply:

Going to scour Usenet and WWW forums for more info before we go to press. 'Net-savvy fans always know where the bodies are buried...

@Quarterwomann Try that new "Gaming Age" Forum. Good place to find sources.

CV had like 10 re-prints on NES. Almost impossible it wasn't a near million seller in the US alone surely. Add at least a couple of Japanese and EU releases. It's really hard to get very old games sales data, but it was a huge name back then.

There's this old promotional Konami flayer from 1995 and it says the Castlevania series before that point had sold "over 4 million units".

Does anyone know any reliable sales data for SotN?

Found this, NPD, USA only and only as far back as 1997:

Circle of the Moon 475k
Symphony of the Night 475k
Castlevania 64 - 350k
Lament of Innocence 350k
Dawn of Sorrow 275k
Portrait of Ruin 225k
Curse of Darkness 200k
Dracula X PSP 200k
Order of Ecclesia 175k
Aria or Sorrow 150k
Harmony of Dissonance 125k
Chronicles 75k
Legacy of Darkness - 50k
Judgment 25k (lol)

There's a figure floating around from 2005ish that says the series had sold 20 million copies at that point. And apparently Castlevania IV sold only half a million worldwide. Otherwise there's little data anywhere for earlier games.

They 'announced' that Lords of Shadow was the best selling game in the series, so likely its sales at the point of announcement had just passed another game in the past? It sold like 2 million?

I think it's likely the original game was it and sold at least a million. Heaps of NES reprints, multiple PC ports, a Famicom cart re-release, not even counting oddities like GBA NES classics and Virtual console (which kind of count given Steam and downloads count these days). CV2 might also have done well (it got a book and was hyped by Nintendo Power, and Simon was in Captain N), likely 3 was too late on the NES to have as much impact.

Look, I'll always like Classic-styled Castlevania better than any of the IGA stuff, but I like IGA's stuff better than not having Castlevania. I'm super hyped to see if we get the spiritual sequel that we all want.

Castlevania name was big back in the day but let's not pull figures out if you cannot back them with reliable sources.

I know that it's way too early to say this and it really means nothing, be Symphony of the Night was one of the first games I played on my then-new Vita. I had never played the game before and I couldn't put it down. I brought my Vita everywhere trying to squeeze in ten minutes here, fifteen minutes there, and when I got home I would sit head straight to the couch without taking my shoes off or putting my stuff down and dive back in for hours.

Castlevania on the Vita is really something incredible and I hope, if he is making something like that, it hits the handheld. Like other people who grew up playing Metroidvanias hanging over the side of their bed on the GBA, I can't imagine playing it any other way. For me, that's where it belongs, and for me, that's what I hope this game is and what I want to experience.

I wonder if it will be a Kickstarter.

I have no idea if the following also has a role to this, but this was posted on the Castlevania Dungeon.

The first sign rises with the full moon.

Soon, I will return.

As you can see with the pentagram, it exactly matches the one from the teaser image, so either this is a fan mock-up, or really some viral campaign for IGA's project, which has resurrected like a demon vampire king.

Just something to note. Took a look at that forum post. The user name is IGAVANIA and whoever they have has never posted before that one thread. Favorite game is listed as SOTN.

Can't wait if this is real. Who needs Konami. Take all my money IGA.

IGAVANIA is also the same amount of characters in the image with the password. Funny that.

We don't need a 1999 game

Iga is 1999

The same post showed up on Chapel of Resonance.

Same thing (a single post) and the same user who also registered his account today. *Edit* Originally linked it but it doesn't seem to be working.

Also, there's a thing that says WHIP.png but I can't actually see what the image looks like . Going to do a little more fansite digging and see if anything has popped up.

I would hope so. I mean, it could also be riding the wave of Konami essentially killing its IPs, so this would be quite a...ressurection.

I hope the hype behind Yooka-Laylee doesn't interfere with this, if this project is still planned for KickStarter. Then there's the question of how and why now, seven months later, this is unfolding the way it was. Maybe IGA was looking for private funding?

IGA could totally benefit from the Konami fallout. People are being so vitriolic towards that situation that he could get some insane good will by announcing a kickstarter.

That said, with Yooka-Laylee in motion right now, some of the limelight may be taken away. Eager to see what happens next

Another interesting thing regarding the tweet from Quarterwomann

It was favourited by Shane Bettenhausen from Sony.

Don't know if this means anything (possibly Sony are going to be funding him?) But I guess we'll have to wait and see

Not sure how much that means but I'd say its definitely possible. From what I understand Ori and Axiom Verge have both done decently well and met sales expectations. So I could see someone definitely giving money for this style of digital games going forward because they definitely have their market.

Getting a publisher to fund it would certainly explain Iga suddenly bouncing back from mobile development

They did not literally give him straw and sticks. You're just being too silly!

Okay. Paper mache and $3,000.

I don't know if that could be looking too much into it. I know Shane is a big Castlevania fan, as was a lot of the 1Up crew.

This fits the supposed alchemy theme of the game.

Well it is a takeoff of the old Quaterman gossup column from the old EGM and Shane has ties to EGM.

Isn't It more likely that he just enjoys that the Quarterman name has been revived to tease a game from a dev he respects? Like it says right there in his bio, Shane is ex-EGM and probably wrote under the Quarterman name himself a few times. He's also friends with the 8-4 guys who are probably running this twitter account, two of whom are also ex-EGM/1up. And Shane had mentioned before on podcasts how much he enjoyed Igavanias.

Don't read too much into the favorite-ing.

The rabbit hole goes deep with this one. I just hope that they'll say something about it before/after E3 (since I don't want it to be overshadowed by anything).

Koji Igarashi + Michiru Yamane + Ayame Kojima pls.

Yes, this is all I need.

If they can't get Ayame Kojima, then Masaki Hirooka (Order of Ecclesia's artist) is an acceptable substitute.
