Rare to announce new game at E3

As long as it isn't a create your own world game.

Gregg Mayles is boss. To me, he and Seavor are RARE.

Now we just need to know who is the composer.

What's with the Hololens nonsense? As if they're going to make a big E3 announcement about a game that requires you to shell out the best part of a grand to play.

I know some of it is obviously joking but there are a couple of posts that seem to think it's really going to be a Hololens game which just seems fucking bizarre.

Signs are pointing to a new Battletoads. And confirmation of no Kinect, at least. Still, after announcing a Phantom Dust remake and then basically murdering it in its crib, I'm a little leery of nostalgia-oriented game announcements from Microsoft.

Looks better than the game "Cascade" they cancelled. What was the point of rendering the vagina and other nudity for an MMO?

Didnt Rare have several titles in the works? In regards to Battletoads, this is a old retro game with small appeal
except here on gaf, HUGE appeal
, so I really hope its a new Banjo game.

Yeah, I don't care what will be announced, as nothing of note has been created for a good long while from RareWare.

And before people point out that I'm being unfairly dismissive, I know that I am. I don't understand why everyone is so excited about this bit of "news", especially with how there are not only so many things that are going against thie new, unproven team, but most of their output has been underwhelming at best.

Exciting, when was the last time Rare revealed something that wasn't Kinect crap? E3 2005?

Personally, I'd like for them to do a proper sequel to Perfect Dark and pretend PD 0 never existed.

What Rare have already said about their project so far makes me rule out Banjo-Threeie. And I don't think Playtonic, who seem to know what it is, would be quite as confident about Yooka-Laylee if Rare were developing a true sequel to Banjo-Tooie for them to compete with.

We'll see soon enough though.

So you acknowledge that you're being unfairly dismissive, but wonder why others aren't being unfairly dismissive too?

If they were working on Banjo, I feel like Steve Mayles wouldn't have left in September of 2014 to make a new IP based off Banjo...
Ugh, please be Banjo.

Precisely. I don't care who is attached to this project, as we are dealing with a video game studio that has been sorely mishandled & has released a butt-load of bad software.

Exactly. People still thinking this is Banjo 3 can't see it yet, but Rare has most definitely moved on from their past. They've been talking in that kind of tone for many years. Simon has JUST SAID it again, "Rare is about new things". They want to make a heavy hitter IP, something that blows up and becomes huge. They've been trying to do that since Viva Piñata until they kinda had it with KS, but now it's dead so they'll try something new. As a fan of their history I don't like any of this, but that's who they are now. I don't expect them to work on their classic IP anytime soon, if ever. We might see Banjo/Battletoads eventually, but it won't be from Rare.

Hasnt doing something new always been a part of Rare though? I mean they werent exactly putting out Wizards and Warriors games on the N64.

Whatever this game ends up being, Rare and Ms badly need this to be something "classic".

The trouble is, it's almost an impossible legacy to go up against - those old Rare games are absolutely full of nostalgic joy for so many people. It's going to be near impossible to live up to that legacy, whatever they come up with.

This sounds like a brand new IP, which is exactly what MS needs for X1. That and Banjo needs to happen too.

My guess would be Rare are working on both at the moment.

I'm both excited and worried. Excited because I know I will love it ! Worried because I want people to love it too, and it's the difficult part : The "It's not Rare anymore" thing is still here :-/

Just look at Viva Pinata, it was a great game but it wasn't what people expected from Rare (same for Nuts and Bolts). Difficult time for Rare. I hope they will rise again. They deserve it !

No. I expected Viva Pinata from Rare. In fact, it was the most Rare game of their entire 360 catalog.

Nuts and Bolt though? I loved the art and I was hyped as fuck till I played it. Not a bad game, far from it actually. But creation games are not my taste.

lobb listed a few rare IP that isn't being worked on right now. perfect dark was one of them and I think he said viva isn't in the works either. I think conker is possible but I hope Microsoft isn't stupid enough to fund it without seavor heading it.

I think blast corps would be awesome but it doesn't have the brand strength I think Microsoft is looking for right now.

my guess is that its banjo nuts and bolts racing. take the diddy kong story mode and some form of cart/boat/plane building aspect and mash them together. would be interesting online as well.

How many OG Rare guys are even still there? I am having a hard time figuring out how this is exciting.
I was waiting for this comment. Not real Rare thread without someone pointing out there aren't same people working as 20 years ago, so it can't be good game obviously. There can't be new talent...

I'm excited, want Banjo Threeie but a new IP is fine and probably makes sense for both Rare and Microsoft, as long as it is in the traditional Rare style it's good. Pity all the talent left years ago to make Haze but what can you do.

In his defence, look at Naughty Dog. How many original staff members are still there? Who's going to get excited about their next project? Huh? HUH?

As usual I mixed up Rare and Retro in my head when I read the thread title.

I just bought an Xbone so I'd be thrilled if this turned out to be something cool but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'm personally hoping for something completely new that can offer a nice contrast to some of the games we've seen so far this generation.

I'm not actually a fan of battletoads, banjo, viva piñata, conker or perfect dark.

Id would be nice for them to come out swinging instead of relying on nostalgia.

I have to admit I have no idea ND's situations, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have some changes too since early days. But still it's not proof game is bad if they have changed staff.

I don't think you quite picked up on the subtlety of the sarcasm there.

To be fair though, Donkey Kong Country isn't really that great and any game taking inspiration from it won't be particularly good either.

To be fair.

ít's ok to be happy with a Rare no Kinect game but what talented people left at Rare?

I think this is probably like to be excited by a new Konami game because they made Suikoden in the past.

No talented people there now, Rare is made up of interns. All the talented people that left were the only talent in all of England sadly. Poor RARE.

Rare made a couple of good Kinect games.
Good Kinect games! Is that not like an oxymoron?
They must be wizards or something.

Will I finally be able to phone my local retailer about my preorder?

More seriously: I have a hard time getting excited about a new Battletoads by the current Rare. Even for the N64-era Rare it would've been a hard challenge to make it exciting again. I can't picture a good AAA revival of such an oldschool beat'them'all. It would work better as a Double Dragon Neon style of download-only game. I might be proven wrong but I really don't see how.

A new IP would be better. Or Perfect Dark... tho I'm not sure if I want current-Rare to handle Perfect Dark ever again...
