Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

Anybody with a 290 and Intel CPU run this yet?

I want to see if I could run this in 4K/30 fps (don't judge because Fox Engine looks fucking amazing in 4k) like I did with Ground Zeroes (with a mixture of high and extra high settings).

Running quite nicely on my quickly aging 660. Had to cut some of the obvious pretties, but like GZ, I've got quite clean IQ and a steady 60.

KBAM control however, seems just as much of an afterthought as it was in GZ. Half the button prompts are in Xbox 360 buttons, the controls section brings up a controller and not a keyboard (I don't have a controller, so it's not detecting one), freelook during cutscenes causes extremely jittery movement, aim sensitivity still seems off even after tweaking, and the bug I had in GZ where Snake would randomly get stuck running to the left or right is back in TPP. It appears to be happening with greater frequency, too.

I don't hold much hope of most of that getting fixed, so I'm hoping it won't cause too much frustration.

That's a bit much to ask, and calling it a "big problem with PC gaming" seems reaching. There's not even an officially supported way to use a DS4 on a PC. Games generally do support the standard dual-analog controller API, which is Xinput on Windows.

(Personally, I have the button mapping hardwired in my optical system at this point, so I have no problem with it)

The fact that I find that to be the biggest problem with PC gaming should be taken as a compliment to PC gaming as a whole. I'm new to this though so it's going to take some time for me to get used to the mild annoyance of the DS4 not being supported properly (and I know it is partly Sony's fault).

It's just feels a bit lazy that games like TW3 or MGS5 who have released these games on the PS4 couldn't be bothered to add a DS4 prompt texture and DS4 compatibility from the beginning.

I see why it could seem that way, but really, when a controller is not even officially supported by a platform you would need to jump through quite a lot of hoops to support it. Basically, you'd have to use the (antiquated and annoying) Direct Input API, and then figure out whether it's actually a DS4 or some other direct-input-compatible gamepad. And finally, especially in a larger company with lawyers, once you've done that, you need to determine if it's actually allowed to ship those button mappings with your PC game! (The PS button shapes are trademarked AFAIK)

I'm quick to call out developers (or rather, publishers) when they really are lazy in their PC efforts, but as long as the DS controllers are not officially supported on Windows I'm willing to cut them some slack in that regard.

Still struggling with the controls a bit, I can't figure out how to change my facing while crawling <.< my char tends to just start crawling backwards instyead of turning around.

Yep, sounds like a Metal Gear Solid game.

I found that you can use a "Naked" version of all your camo, so I decided to go hunting as Nature Snake.

I am loving this game.

I'd say they are okay. A few odd bindings, like V being the key to control the zoom as it's a bit awkward to push when you have to hold F for your binoculars. And for whatever reason the game doesn't support a 5 button mouse, so you'll have to use your mouse's 3rd party software to make a bind. I put the top mouse button as the V key for zoom and the second one as a "slow walk/sneak" button. Other than that though, aiming is great with the mouse and I'm way more accurate than when I try to use my controller(surprise surprise)

I get that they didn't provide support for 5 button mice (stupid), but can you rebind controls?

Ugh, they don't support 5 button mice? The little things... MGS always has you pressing many buttons at the same time. It would be nice to have access to the buttons easiest to press.

Oh fuck me. I updated my drivers and lost custom resolution's in W10. Can't seem to make it work anymore. No more downsampling...

Same here through HDMI. It's been like this for me since Nvidia driver 353.62. I didn't have this issue on 353.30 and under.

Why not use DSR instead?

Simple: the Gaussian filter DSR uses for scaling. It's more expensive than traditional bilinear or bicubic scaling methods, and a heck of a lot blurrier, even at 0% smoothness.

Anyone else notice deadzone/input lag playing with a controller? Using the x360 controller here. Compared to the PS4 version of the game, atleast when i use the x360 controller on pc, it is a lot harder to aim. Talking like easy headshots vs missing them. Damn shame too... Im going to buy BT dongle to try the ps4 controller on pc, but noticed some already mentioned there being a deadzone on those too. Really wanted to play this on PC first too. Oh well

Everything on max except for 3 things. One is shadows and the other is terrain textures. Can´t remember the other one. Had one little drop in the Prologue to 50 during an explosion otherwise it runs perfectly at 60fps.

Anyone running it with a GTX 960 2GB?

Recently came into possession of a 960, got it overclocked fairly modestly as well, and am hoping to run the game at or better visuals than the PS4 at 1080/60.

GeForce Experience set mostly everything to High-Extra High but I dunno how it'll run.

On my EVGA SSC 960 2GB and i5 2500k @ 4.1, 8gb I can get solid 60fps at 1080p with high across the board. I can turn up most stuff to extra high and had negligible performance hit. Play with it and see if you can find a happy medium.

Yup.

The game actually runs better than Ground Zeroes. I have most options up to Extra High and few on High, most importatnly Effects @ 1080p.

I have done only the prologue and first mission in the actual open world Afghanistan. I have not noticed a single drop below 60, it runs VERY smooth, I was really surprised.

I have not tested it, but I would expect 30/4K with mixing up some options totally achievable.

EDIT: I should clarify: I can go higher and still be at mostly 60, but I want to have no drops whatsoever. Also on 15.8 Beta drivers

Steam keeps pausing my download. Restarted steam, restarted PC, changed DL-region in steam and nothing helps...

Any of you guys encounter the same problem? In Belgium here...

Is there a slower sneak button, or are you expected to go prone when stealthily approaching a guy from the back (...)? They hear footsteps with the default crouch speed. Not too happy with the PC controls TBH, but I did get it free, so I can't bitch too much. There are some finger gymnastics going on with the default layout, though.

Is anyone else getting really weird stuttering during cutscenes and "loading"/across checkpoint lines? It seems to be a streaming issue or something since Ground Zeroes on the same rig works fine.

Hold Ctrl to walk, crouch walk and crawl slower.

Thanks, that's fairly similar to my owns setup so I'll definitely be messing around with different settings.

Im pretty sure i can get a solid 60fps with my set up but all im getting is 3-8ps in the prologue .

MSI GTX 970
4690k 3.5ghz
16gb ram

anyone know the reason? In GeForce Experience i optimized it and it all came up as Extra High yet the FPS is very low.

Game looks absolutely gorgeous. I run this at constant 60 fps during gameplay with 1080p and everything set to highest except DoF and Motion Blur being off. GPU is 670 and 3570K CPU.

Anyone else having issues with Steam overlay though? Can't take pictures (I've already missed too many scenic views) nor open the overlay.

They were able to fix 2 of 4 issues I had with the KB+M controls that were present in GZ, the finger gymnastics required to interrogate dudes and not changing mouse sensitivity to reflect zoom distance. No mouse cursor in menus is dumb, but bearable. The other unfixed issue (only 3 mouse buttons bindable) I worked around with mapping software anyway. I bound my side mouse buttons to sneak and binocs/scope, it heavily reduces the amount of awkward finger movement required for advanced maneuvers. Great PC port yet again! Sad that this is probably the last time we're going to see a FOX engine game...

I have a (4gb) 770. I have everything maxed except for lighting, shadows, and AA (which are all on high). It runs great. I imagine you can probably get pretty close to that.

I have similar settings with a 760 + i3 4330 and I'm getting locked 60fps at 1080p, Ive not had a single drop in frame rate at all.

Don't know why, but there's tearing EVERYWHERE.

I've tried to activate Vsync on both the game and force it through NVidia control panel, but it's useless. It's getting on ny nerves.

You say that but I can't do max settings on The Witcher 3 at 1090p on my 970.

Thanks for the info though. Massive shame it isn't compatible with DS4 natively. This is arguably the biggest problem with PC gaming when developers can't be bothered with controller compatibility, especially when the controller is fully supported on their console release.

Not bothered by it at all. Using ds4windows I can turn off the light bar, and there will be mods shortly for the ps4 icons in game.

Does anyone else get massive stilted jumps in the realtime shadows at Mother Base? They seem like really far second-to-second shifts compared with the main maps. It's quite distracting.

Someone earlier was wondering about performance on a laptop. Playing just past the prologue in the first open world section, I'm getting a solid 1080p60fps with everything maxed on a Lenovo Y50.

Specs:
i7 4720HQ CPU
4GB GTX 860M
16GB RAM
Windows 10

GTX 780 maxed out with hbao+

60fps 99% of the time.

Drops to 1fps in the emblem editor, for some reason lol.

That's actually dissapointing to here. I maxed GZ with a setup fairly similar to yours (slightly better cpu), so I had hoped to do the same here. Are you running at 1080p?

Like another member answered, a 960 with i5.2500 and 8gb ram (my same specs) will run it incredibly. For me, everything except "post" is set to extra high and I didn't go below 59 fps throughout the entire prologue. These graphics are blowing my mind. Haven't seen it on PS4 yet (heard it's incredible too) but there's no way it keeps up with this.
