If racist jokes are what you tend to crank out on a lark, then yeah, social media probably isn't for you.

No, I don't, but that's not my point. People saying dumb shit like "I'm going to blow up LA!" on twitter and getting arrested. Someone digging through past twitter comments about how they "hate pikes" which they said when they were 14 and using it against them.

It's gross. People say and do stupid shit all the time. I don't want all the stupid things I've said noted down forever next to my name and a photo of me.

Then you shouldn't say stupid things next to your name and picture of your face, and you'll probably be fine.

I agree that the social media witch hunters often go too far. Look at the Trevor Noah debacle that flared up and then quickly died down.

However, there are some cases where unequivocally the bad guy gets got and this is one of those cases.

...

I've been on the internet for what seems like forever and somehow have managed to not say stupid racist shit in all that time though.

If only the were as easy as just not doing it. Unfortunately most stupid things come out before you've thought about what you're saying.

I'm not debating whether this case is in the right or wrong. Just these are the reasons why I won't use social media. I'd rather not risk it.

I agree with this sentiment to an extent but its been long enough for us to know better when it comes to social media

At least I hope people have changed it. I know Ive been apart of a ton of stupid stuff online that I wish I could take back so I get it.

At this point if I was confronted about it I would try to be humble, honest and apologetic

Well yah, that I can understand and agree with. But the person I quoted said all employees. That's a pretty wide net to be casting for an employer to actually follow through on.

I mean I can't think of a work environment where your racist comments go viral where it wouldn't be an issue. Even if you work in a factory stirring a pot or something all it takes is one person looking at the "occupation" portion in Facebook and your company gets dragged threw the mud too.

So, we're talking about you right? Have you ever sat down and thought about this kind of stuff before hand? Why not pre-emptively strike your poor decisions by thinking through the stupid shit you've said in the past and thinking about why you wouldn't say it today?

Get introspective! Or not, I guess. But if you're worried about saying stupid things then maybe you need take a look at what would make you say the stupid things in the first place.

I don't mean to offend.

Except that's not what's being discussed here and it's not even true. The two biggest cases of people getting fired over social media (this and Justine Sacco) were adults. Do you have examples of adults getting fired over tweets/Facebook/xanga/live journal posts they made when they were teenagers? Absent that, this is the typical "slippery slope" nonsense that ignores context and reality.

It has nothing to do with impulsiveness, and everything to do with the horrible shit that's lurking in your mind.

This guy is just another in a long line of people that have been burned/exposed on social media

I think he should reevaluate the people he keeps in his social circle to solicit these types of horrible responses

I think that's unfair. A lot of people say stupid shit without even realizing how hurtful or shocking it could be, they just say it because they think it's funny.

Doesn't have to be any kind of horrible lurking, just a lack of introspection.

I could see "he was feral" as possibly not being racist, but if you're going to try to pass that off as a misunderstanding you probably shouldn't have the 1-2 punch of a bunch of clearly racist friends and other racist shit in your history. You don't get any benefit of the doubt at that point.

Pulling the piss out of mates - who are up for it and give as good as they get - is slightly different than posting racist shit about some random kid you took a picture of, public or private, that is reprehensible.

I do agree that if there is piss taking between mates about themselves you should probably keep it private. The problem is when that shit leaks out to people who don't get the "joke" and rightfully think you're a racist cunt - not you btw - we're talking hypotheticals here.

I'm all for mates taking the piss out of each other and it is generally no holds barred. The worse the funnier, usually.

The thing is, it wasn't even just some random kid. Putting the racist shit aside in what world is it OK to take a picture of your coworker's kid, post it to the internet, and insult him? This dude is just a fucking idiot.

Doesn't matter because he's ruined. When you Google his name this will always come up. He'll never get a decent job again. Even Baskin Robbin's would find out.

He agrees with those people, there's a reason he has them as friends.

This is exactly why I don't use social media. One stupid joke you made in the spare of the moment without thinking can cost you your job.

If someone is making "jokes" like this then they deserve to get fired. Very few companies want to be associated with racist idiots. Zero sympathy.

Don't worry you don't offend. I just have awful habits of saying whatever comes into my head immediately. I've told me boss he's an idiot multiple times (luckily he understands that I don't mean disrespect, I just speak then think) in meetings. I've earnestly tried to filter what I say, but it doesn't work 100% of the time.

Yes. A year or two a go a woman who was working for the police got fired because when she was 14 she said he hated pikes on twitter.
I'm not saying anything about a slippery slope. Just that I don't use social media, because I don't want something stupid I've said to be stored forever and to be held accountable for stuff I've said while angry, young or drunk.

Yup, instead I make a thread on dark humor on gaf and have no repercussions. I don't trust social media to take dark humor well ever.

As long as it's clearly in the context of a joke I don't think social media will give a shit. Then again, they got on Trevor Noah for his lame ass jokes... but nothing came of it, just a few upset fluffies.

Not that I cheer people losing their jobs, but that Tim Zheng guy was talking crazy shit before he got fired by his company.

He went from that to this

Comes across as very insincere. Also looks like he lost a very good job over this. What an idiot.

And now when employers google his name this shit will pop up.

lmao!

Like with the Ahmed Mohamed thing, I'm left feeling pretty positive that this kind of shit really doesn't fly online anymore. In the government and in general racism will be a problem for a long time, but seeing people lose their jobs almost immediately for racist shit is comforting.

That's the thing right? People say "oh I'm glad I'm not on social media" but are you talking about this story or just in general? Cause this guy was having a racist facebook party with a 3 y/o kid. He wasn't talking shit with his buddies.

If you got on social media and started doing ANYTHING like this then you are a racist or an edgelord and the line between those two things is increasingly thin. Full Stop. No context, no excuse, do not pass go.

But if you and your mates are on twitter what exactly would be the interaction that gets you fired? I'm so confused by this pre-persecution complex that some people have like we're coming after your jokes between friends.

Not sure if this reply was for me. Possibly the person I replied to?

The thing is, it wasn't even just some random kid. Putting the racist shit aside in what world is it OK to take a picture of your coworker's kid, post it to the internet, and insult him? This dude is just a fucking idiot.

I know. Boggles the mind. I honestly can't get the thinking behind it. Maybe non-thinking. Gut racism.

His reaction with the apology and hastag is just sociopathic as well. There is zero sincerity in it.

Who the fuck is Tim zheng. And yeah, read the article last night about these fuck ups, glad they got fired and exposed.

Ya I just used you as a diving board into a mini-rant.

lol funny thing is I don't use social media for anything. It just doesn't do anything for me, not because i'm a closet racist, just a bit of an IT luddite. I remember messaging randomers on VAX goddamit...

Love reading their "oh shit I got caught" apologies. I'm sure this experience has changed them to make them no longer racists. They've seen the light!

Treat typing something online on a message board or on a social media site the same as speaking in front of a room full of people you don't know well. You'd know better not to randomly spout idiotic shit in that situation either I'd hope.

What a bunch of fucking idiots. Not just to openly post racist shit, but to post racist shit about a kid. A co-worker's kid, no less. You never, ever, say shit about a co-worker's kid beyond, "Oh, kids, alright. They can be little rascals sometimes, am I right?"

Not sympathetic to those that lost their jobs one bit. Sometimes if you hold certain views you may do well to just stay the fuck off social media.

Utter assholes. Glad they lost their jobs. Maybe that will make them realize that there is actual consequences for being a racist.

Wow, how terrible. And of course some people are like "one comment and the internet ruined his life" but like the dude's making racist jokes with his friend about a 3-year-old. That's low. Really low. Like, how pathetic must your life be to do that sort of thing? It must be quite the sad existence.
