The full translation of the column has been posted over on Source Gaming if you guys are interested.
We were conducting a “Smash Ballot” where people could vote for their favorite characters. Worldwide, 1.8 million votes were counted, and of the fighters that were negotiable, as well as realizable in Smash, Bayonetta had the highest amount of votes!* Bayonetta 2 was also a Nintendo exclusive, so negotiations were very easy.

*TL note: In case “negotiably possible” isn’t clear, Sakurai uses the word “negotiation” here, so I take that to mean negotiations in a business sense. As for realizable, Sakurai has written about that before, in column 430.

But because her original series is so distinctive, I was very troubled, trying to think of ways to properly represent her. In the end, I made her a combo-heavy fighter that can start combos from various places. Because you need to think about how much knockback to deal if you want to begin a combo, she’s a fighter with a lot of depth.

She has many moves that show off her distinctive character, like Wicked Weaves, which uses her hair as a conduit to summon forth limbs of Infernal Demons, or Witch Time, where she must predict her opponent’s offense to counterattack, creating an opportunity by slowing time.

To tell the truth…Going through the ratings board for each country/region was extremely difficult. In particular, Japan’s rating board was very strict on Bayonetta’s sexy antics, and there were many times where I thought “You’re not even going to let this through?”

This batch of DLC fighters took more work than the fighters in the base game, and they all have their own especially unique characteristics and playstyles. Knowing this is the final update, I put in as much effort as I could, so please enjoy!

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai revealed an interesting tidbit about the Fighter Ballot for the Wii U and 3DS games in his Famitsu column this week. In his piece, Sakurai states that about 1.8 million votes were cast worldwide.

Nintendo announced Bayonetta as the Super Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot winner last week. She was the top choice in Europe, within the top five in the United States, and first overall when it comes to negotiable and realizable characters.

We’ll have more from Sakurai’s Famitsu column shortly.
The other winners were probably shit like Goku, John Cena, and Snake.

I've always been confused by those Smash truthers who really think that K. Rool is something people wanted and that Sakurai rigged the vote to keep him out.

Better brace yourself now, potential whining over a potential winner other than Bayonetta is going to start in 3... 2...

I don't understand why GOKU is so ridiculous? Isn't it fact that the game was codeveloped by namco bandai the makers of the dragon ball games??

Wonder who were the top 5 for the U.S.

I voted for Issac from Golden Sun. Would've been cool to have him over another Fire Emblem character, but I see no problem with Bayonetta. I am shocked it took this long. I figured she would have been included early on or as part of the main game.

Developing his games doesn't mean they call the shots on his appearances in other games.

That and, you know, not a videogame character.

Sakurai shouldn't mention who won because everybody would just complain.

He did, and you were proved right.

I don't see anything that suggests we're going to get actual results beyond Bayonetta. The ballot is more than likely going to have an impact on the sequel, so I would think they'd keep that to themselves.

I wonder how high Takamaru got in the final results.

Probably not as high as Snake or Goku, but hopefully enough for Sakurai to plan him for Smash 5.

Replace FE character No. 7341 with Shovel Knight and I would've been so damn happy. Still awesome to have Bayonetta and Cloud though.

The way it is worded there makes it look like bayonetta was the 5th place CONSIDERING characters that could be done.

Like she could be like the 20th place =P

I honestly believe whoever voted Cena to be idiots.

They were born idiots.

Cena appeared in more nintendo games than Cloud ;D

First he is not a videogame character, but most importantly that rights to non videogame characters have expiration dates because they change developers once in a while. That is why Capcom can't see Marvel vs Capcom 3 anymore and the Deadpool game was out of steam for a while. Nintendo don't want that kind of headache

So did an unrealizable and not negotiable character actually win?

Oh well, at least I got Sceptile in Pokken.

Didn't seem that way to me.

He said she was 1st in Europe and in the N/A top 5 without any qualification. Only when he said that she was number 1 worldwide did he add the caveat that it was among "negotiable and realizable characters". Obviously since she was probably not 1st in popularity in N/A she might not have been first overall without qualification.

What if Sanke was never considered because Sakurai was pissed at Konami treatment of Kojima?

It's definitely possible, but given that Kojima himself asked Sakurai to include Snake via a live-stream, I'd think the problem lies with Konami.

"I’m not working on that game so I don’t know, but I don’t think that’s likely. I don’t know. Well if Mr. Sakurai is watching this, please use Snake."
