NPD Sales Results for December 2015 [Up1: Super Mario Maker]

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Because EA's partnership was with Disney. I don't think they controlled the marketing for Battlefront. The timing of the release, the marketing deal with Sony, the timing of the marketing were probably dictated by Disney.

EA is making a killing with Battlefront though. So kudos for getting the Star Wars license from Disney.

Naw, that's EA.

What about the Uncharted Collection?

Sony Corp's "Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection" also did very well.

Bundle sales were below that of Star Wars: Battlefront, but not significantly.

Remember, console sales nowadays are pretty much all bundles. So the good majority of the 1582K PlayStation 4 consoles sold were in some form of bundles.

This month, the Star Wars Battlefront and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection bundles were incredibly cheap at $299 from December 6th through December 19th, so those two were very popular.

The head of marketing for the game was David "Awesome Button" Silverman (who does good work!): https://www.linkedin.com/in/mrsil

He moved to Amazon so they're replacing him now: http://www.dice.se/jobs/positions/star-wars-senior-marketing-director/

There are other people at EA on this too: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gstotzjr

Hahaha, really? Do they just not game over there?

I'm sure you meant this in a lighthearted way but these countries being thrown around as huge populations are buried in poverty as in the vast majority of those 100 million people can barely afford food. There is zero chance of selling game consoles to anyone but middle class people of which there are barely any in these countries. Upper class too of course but goes without saying upper class is < 1%

First of all, thank you for doing this.

Second, a small request for LTD number on some of the 3rd party jrpgs such as:

- Disgaea 5
- Tales of Zestiria
- Dragon Quest Hereos
- Omega Quintet

Pretty please?

According to NPD Group data, this year hardware bundle sales were up by 500,000 units, or around 2% of game sales year-over-year.

Bundles are becoming an increasingly attractive value proposition for the average American consumer interested in software.

It's also kinda replaced the first huge price cut consoles usually get. Instead of dropping $100, now MS and Sony can drop the price a bit less and pack in a game. It might help out with how these consoles are priced years from now, and be able to sell to more laggards than last gen.

Any info on Trails of Cold Steel?

Smaller price drop then put the system on sale Black Friday and a couple weeks in December might be the new norm.

A small majority it seems. Even if the Jan to Oct sales numbers are 45% of the yearly total, this isn't an insignificant number to save an extra 50 dollars of revenue per unit sold.

^This. A LTD on these recent (October?) releases, Mr. Mulcair.

Had a thought...

Can the first party exclusive franchises basically be considered niche this gen? Halo, Bloodborne, Forza?

Are exclusives now what the mid-tier games were last gen? Not amazing sellers, but nice middle of the road sellers appealing to a more niche crowd?

What about Pokemon? Or would that be considered the exception.

Most first party games were always mid\low tier but 3 or 4 of them .
And if we talking NPD only Sony have it the worst in the US.
Also don't think you can call halo niche it still going to sell 3 to 4 million in the US alone when all said and done .

The lead SKUs for Fallout 4 and Battlefront are the PS4 and Xbox One respectively. That can be attributed to hardware bundles, correct?

We would have to see how well Sony's big guns do this year first. Given the improved performance of titles like Infamous and Bloodborne compared to their predecessors, the same should apply to the bigger titles as well.

Definitely not. Huge seller on a consistent basis. But Nintendo is in a completely different position than MS or Sony. Niche on a Nintendo console would be everything not Nintendo made.

Just out of curiosity. Is there any logical reason why NPD don't include bundles in their charts? I mean we're talking here about almost 3M combined next-gen hardware that were sold in ONE month. Even if half of them are bundles this means that over 1.5M software are not included. That's pretty big even for the U.S. to A. imo

They're in the report for the people that want to know, but I'd imagine they don't include them in the top software chart because if they did, you'd end up with the same bundled games every month on the charts. Now, when they gave out a bunch more numbers in general, that wasn't a big deal. But now with us only getting a top 10 chart, do we really need to see Gears of War and the Uncharted collection (as a current example) taking up two of the spots with their bundles?

Well I guess no but thanks for the response

There are two unique datasets: the Packaged Software dataset where games retail at $59.99, and the Hardware dataset where systems retail at $349.

The charts released by NPD Group PR only focus on the software dataset because it's a direct, 1:1 comparison of how games fare as software sold in stores.

In that sense, NPD Group PR doesn't intend on showing the public the best-selling video games, but rather, the health of the Packaged Software retail market and the most successful titles in that area of business.

Remember that The NPD Group has retailers as its primary clients who realize their margin on the sell-through of packaged software, so the health of that market is paramount.

Yeah makes sense. Retailers already know their own data, what makes NPD so important is having a data point for their marketshare percentage in the larger picture. And whether their share is growing / shrinking / staying level

it is really sad to me that Call of duty is still the biggest selling game. :( Battlefront selling numbers. Great sales how is the player base for that game tho?

I hear some posative things about battlefront but a lot of negative. XBox is doing really well in the USA considering the absolute hurrendous launch, PS4 is just dominating but I am sure last gen the xbox was ther top of the hardware sales and consistantly ranked the top on software. even including bundles sku's like COD.

So xbox is still putting up a fight in the USA which makes it a viable platform and won't be ignored by publishers. All im syaing is that the PS4 is not running away with it this gen when it comes to SOFTWARE by the looks of it. I could be wrong. thats what matters to publishers I guess.

No PS4 November 2014 in the charts? That can't be right?

Shows the turnaround from last years Q4 though. XB1 way outsold PS4 in November/December, and this year almost a straight reversal of that with PS4 outselling. xb1 needed that in 2014 to regain the ground lost during preseason, so that is extra damaging for them in 2015. Is there a consensus to the main reasons for that? I'm guessing the more aggressive third party co-marketing and bundling with things like SW battlefront, along with MS not having a fire sale this year.
