The Witness PC performance thread

Does anyone know a solution to this (without turning off SLI)? It would be nice to utilize my full 690 GTX and avoid any slowdown.

I went through about half the DX1x compatibility bits earlier to see if anything fixed it and, sadly, the trend was everything that worked performance-wise caused flickering. Could be one that works further down the list, I doubt it though.

What are you using to change DX1x compatibility bits, nVidia Inspector?

Apparently the PS4 is running at 900p, which was news to me.

e: it is a statham thread so *shrug*.

900p? :s

It's 900p according to Statham. Ask him for a source of this, he didn't bother to provide one when he made a thread.
I've seen several people mention it in the OT as well.
Kinda surprised as well, the game looks good artistically, but the tech doesn't look too taxing.
Is there anything at all to back up those claims? I searched for it online and could only find statham's locked thread. All the old news said 1080p. Just BS to rile people up?
Use the search function for "900p" in the OT.
But people can't tell?

framerate fluctuates from 45-60 at 3440x1440 with a single 970, don't really care though as the game is awesome and it doesn't affect my enjoyment.

omg omg VR guys

add -vr to the command line

It starts up SteamVR for me. I don't see anything and/or the game crashes, but it kicks on my DK2 and I see the default SteamVR grid.

Rough around the edges, but only slightly. Basically the start menu isn't very usable, and the white vignette-ish effect when using panels is too strong in VR. I also don't quite get the needed performance, so I'm about to try some tweaks there.

The game controls well in VR though, with "comfort turning" in place.

I looked at some screenshots from the screenshot shot thread here and indeed the game is upscaled, blurry and looks to be 900p, 1600x900.

edit, 12/14x1080=900 from pixel counting

I'm surprised people are saying Witness is sharp. Just scrolling through the screenshot shot thread, you can see the native screens vs upscaled screens, they stand out very clear and before counting I could tell Witness was a upscaled blurry game. I guess the art style is making it look "clean" but it's very much a typical upscaled game look even at a glance.

For some reason I "started a new game" like 6 time before getting to the end of the opening tunnel. Now I have a bunch of save files I cant delete. Ive found the local save location for the game so I can delete the extra saves but steam cloud keeps replacing them when I start the game.

Any way to delete save games from within the game or from steam cloud?

My Pc configuration is:

I5 4590
GTX 960 4Gb
16 GB 1600mhz

I haven't buy a "new gen" game yet because I don't know how good is my PC compared with my PS4. This is my first PC in a looooong time.
During the holydays I had several doubts and finally bought all the games for PS4 (witcher, wolfenstein...) when they were on sale in both platforms.
Should I play this game (and others) in my PC?

Anyone not able to get Steam overlay in the game.I am unable to take any screenshots with F12 too.

No problems here, I took some screenshots to help solve a puzzle. Does the overlay work in other games? There's an option in steam settings -> in game to enable/disable the overlay.

If you're using RTSS try turning custom d3d support on.
Not using any external program.Nevermind got it working after restarting the game.Must have been a bug. Also disabled and reenabled the overlay in steam in-game settings and witness settings so that may have helped.

I had to turn down the MSAA from 4x to 1x to get a consistent 60 fps on high settings with my 760. MSAA + DX11 is unsurprisingly a performance killer.

So yeah, makes sense that the PS4 needs to run at 900p for a smooth framerate since the game engine seems to require some form of MSAA, even on low.

Considering GTX950 is faster than PS4.... Yes, clearly. Your 960 would have no trouble outperforming it by a good margin.

Yup, this works! I only turned V-Sync off so far to kill the crazy judder it had at first, but the performance looking in a couple directions still causes it at whatever the default settings are. The positional tracking is still pretty clearly WIP but it is fucking cool still. Hopefully I can figure out how to squash the rest of the judder, I don't want to play it on my monitor now.

Getting 4K60 locked with the high preset and 61 degree vertical fov. And it's not even using my second card. The visuals are absolutely ridiculous! Man, I'll be playing this for months with the amount of screenshots I've been taking. Can't wait to play this in VR come April.

Yup, some preliminary Oculus SDK and SteamVR support out of the box.

Just, get ready to crank it way low. On my 980 I had to make a custom Low config (thanks OP) to really minimize judder without lowering the resolution below 1080p, and it still isn't really judder-free.

Also, be warned, the game has a lot of movement acceleration.

I'm in pretty much the same boat. Disabling V-Sync seems to still leave it up to the Oculus SDK vsync, so that eliminates a lot of initial judder, but there are still many parts of the island that really kill performance.

I wonder if it's more GPU or CPU bound when rendering for VR. Does only changing resolution impact it?
If you're remotely interested in puzzle solving, I'd say just buy it. It's really pretty and figuring out the puzzles is super rewarding. Then you can easily answer your various questions about CPU, GPU, DX11, and so forth. :p

I was going to wait for VR support, since I can't see myself playing a puzzle game twice and it would be a shame to play without VR.

Now that I know it works to some extent I will get it anyway, what I'm scared and why I'm asking about GPU/CPU is whether I'll need to get a 980ti too :p

Your rig is pretty much the same as mine apart from I have a overclocked gtx 960 2g card.

I play games such as arma 2 and 3 as well as fallout, witcher 3 etc at beyond PS4 specs... You should be fine with this :-D

I don't plan to solve puzzles in VR. I can just walk around this place for hours and soak it all in. Pretty much what I did today as soon as I got out of the tutorial section. 2 hours and 0 puzzles done since I got out of that gate. lol

Ah, fair enough. My guess is that it will take a bit (a couple weeks?) before VR support gets solid, and I didn't want to wait that long to play.

It is still a very nice environment to walk around, for what that's worth.

Did you test the frame rate uncapped before you locked at 60 fps?

I am asking because I played in 5120x2160 (downsampled to 2560x1080), 4xMSAA and 120hz ULMB yesterday. I did not formally test fps for some reason, but the game seemed to be running fine. I did not notice any stuttering. This is with a 3570k@4.6, 16gb RAM and Titan X.

Yeah it was running around 150 fps with occasional drops to 110. My TV hates any fps that isn't 30 or 60, so was stuttering and tearing like crazy here. Vsync is pretty much my only option. With it on, it's smooth as butter.

Thanks for the response, and good to hear about the bolded. I guess I will continue with my 120hz ULMB. If I was in your shoes with that picky TV, I would try to increase MSAA past default values.

I'm playing it at 2560x1600 downsampled on a 950 (except the msaa turned down a bit) at stable 60fps. Your 960 is almost twice more powerful than a PS4 so you should have no problems getting better results on it with any game. Get a PS4 version only if you need to play with your friends on multiplayer games I guess.

My PC configuration is quite weak. So this is what I use to get the game somewhat good looking and fluid. I think vsync is mandatory, not for tearing problems, but for a constant framerate. I tweak the "high" config because I want 1080p and not 720p, and because the game crashes with a lower shadow_quality. I would use a lower shadow_quality if it were not making the game crash on start.

Code:
:/display
vsync true

:/render/high
shadow_quality 2
sun_shadow_resolution 256
point_shadow_resolution 256
skip_mipmaps 2
msaa_sample_count 1

I'll try.

Oh is it? I was judging via Fraps with the size of the FPS counter and taking screenshots that were still coming out in 1080p. Maybe it is working after all then. I'll have to compare 2 shots at different resolutions. Thanks.

update: yeah, the resolution changes were working, I just didn't know it was an internal change.

Glad you asked this because I was wondering why I couldn't get it to work last night, internal res change makes sense.

So if I want internal resolution to be 1440p and screen resolution to be 1080p (the downsampling of the newbie I guess), can I just change the text file for the config, and this is it?

The screen resolution will be 1080p, don't/can't change anything there. Just add:

Set a custom/>1080p resolution: Right-click the game -> Properties -> Set launch options -> input -width x -height y, where x and y are your desired figures (e.g. -width 2560 -height 1440 for 1440p). (Credit to Thekla itself.)

from the OP and that will change your internal resolution. I think?

Game worked completely fine with the High Setting right out of the box, looks gorgeous.

But the micro stutter while panning might be some of the worst I've seen. No idea how or if that is fixable.

I think Blow said on Twitter that they were going to look into stutter.

In the meantime, try these:

  • If you have vsync turned on ingame, turn it off (and vice versa)
  • While fullscreen, press alt-enter twice to toggle.
Then see if it is any smoother when you turn around.

The Witness uses borderless, I think. And if you disable in-game vsync the game becomes stuttery as fuck.
I believe The Witness may use both borderless and exclusive fullscreen, since I'm not running Aero and ingame vsync works properly after I press alt-enter twice (I'm theorizing this switches it back into exclusive mode).

I have almost the same configuration and The Witness runs flawlessly at high settings on mine.

BTW, I'm using a VGA monitor (via an adapter), would HDMI change the visual quality that much? I don't see how it could look better lol.
