It is harder to level up everyone at the same time then I thought. I've beaten Brock but I have three characters at level 11 and three at level 9 after five hours. If I keep going at this pace it will take me forever to beat the game. But I don't want to be that eight year old kid again who's level 78 Charizard ripped through the end of the game with a bunch of 20/30 level Pokemon.

Yep, takes forver levelling them all at same pace. Hence my completion time. I also beat almost every trainer save for a fem in victory road. The person with the Alakazam/Hypno destroyed my team

Loved playing through the game again after many years away from it. But a tip if you play Lapras against the Pokemon Champion with Ninetails. He will "Fire Spin you to death" and that will pissed me off. Lapras was abit too slow to charge in with Surf so I had to use Gengar to put him to sleep and bring out Lapras to get the job done.

How did my Six Star Pokemon go in Pokemon Yellow?

1. Pikachu Lv 42 - Pikachu was very useful against a number of Gym leaders and exploring the waters of Kanto. Of course he starred against the Water Gym and helped leveled up other Pokemon along the way. His role was mainly used to build up the other Pokemon that would pose a threat to the Elite Four and that he's too cute to remove from the team because he follows you around and shows you love hearts.

2. Charizard Lv 43 - Charizard wasn't leveled high enough to get "Flamethrower" which to be honest might have helped but overall not against Lance the Dragon Trainer or Silver my evil rival who became a Pokemon Champion for like a hour or so. He was very handy during the Grass Gym and his ability to Fly and be a strong backup Pokemon with "Slash" when shit would hit the fan.

3. Lapras Lv 51 - Lapras was slow to train at first and slowly turned into the giant killer of the Elite Four. Destroying Lance and his Dragon Pokemon, knocking off Bruno's Rock Pokemon in turn with Alakazam and played a strong role against the Pokemon Champion. With knowing "Ice beam" "Surf" and "Thunderbolt" Lapras was the go to Pokemon to deal the big damage and win the big matches. She was the play maker. Lapras's biggest moment was freezing the Pokemon Champion's Exeggutor during a time when the team was nearly lost, giving time to regroup with Revives and change of battle plan.

4. Gengar Lv 42 - Gengar was a challenge because of the lack of moves it can learn. However was easier to level up due to it's "Ghost" type and learning "Psychic" that helped knock off other Poison types in the game with ease. Gengar's biggest moment in the game was right at the end of the Pokemon Champion battle when he was able to put to sleep Ninetails after heavy damaging Lapras over time with it's "Fire Spin" - Long enough for Lapras to take it out.

5. Alakazam Lv 50 - Alakazam was really the first Psychic I trained during this Gen 1 era (Not even during 1999 the last time I played it this much). He was the other play maker in the team however unlike Lapras couldn't take a number of hits and had to strike first in order to win his matches. He helped through the second half of the game and while knocking off. He dealt the final blow after a string of "Psychic" moves to take down a powerful Jolteon

6. Primeape Lv 43 - Primeape's role wasn't that strong against the Elite Four. He was able to team up with Pikachu in taking down the first of the four. However he and Pikachu's roles was building up the other Pokemon. Primeape was huge against the first Gym leader and was the play maker through much of the game due to it's speed and strength. He was slowly taken over by Alakazam and Lapras late in the game. It's ability to cut through Normal Pokemon with ease helped with training and getting through the game.

Definitely agreed.

Yellow reminded me that how his Eevee evolves is entirely dependent on how your encounters with him throughout most of the game play out. Always thought that was pretty neat.

It'd be neat if in future entries, your rival's team in general got more well put together the better you do against them over the course of the game.

To be more specific, in case anyone else is wondering, it's determine by the first 2 battles with your rival.

Lose first battle in Oak's lab -> Vaporeon
Win Oak's lab but lose or skip the first battle on Route 22 -> Flareon
Win both Oak's lab and Route 22 battles -> Jolteon

Which Pokemon Eevee evolves into then determines the rest of his team.

Oh, should have worded this better. I don't want to save the actual Yellow-Charmander for the Red playthrough - I just don't want to use Charmander in my team now and then again in a few months time.

Oh! Well no worries then.

Just reached Victory Road in Yellow with my entire team in the low 40's. Going to try to grind them all to the mid 40's and a couple to the 50's before I fight the elite 4. Going to also restock on X items before I fight them. Trying to think of a gameplan before then and already have most of it laid out:

Lorelei:

Use only Pikachu. Use one X Speed for safety and use 4 X Special's. Going to attack Dewgong before using any of them to try to bait a rest. None of them are much of physical attackers so if I don't one shot a few of them (I'm sure I won't the Jynx and probably the Lapras) I should be fine unless one of them crits.

Bruno:

Just going to play it straight. Venusaur for the Onix's and Mr. Mime for the rest. Don't plan on using any X items.

Agatha:

Going to sweep with Mr. Mime. Going to play it really safe as I don't have to worry about Gengar instantly killing him. Plan on using 3 X Speed's and 4 X Special's. Should be able to sweep her with those.

Lance:

Going to sweep with Blastoise. He'll probably be my highest level as he's the easiest to grind in Victory Road. He should be able to tank Gyarados Hyper Beam's unless they crit. Going to use the same amount of X items on this fight as I did on Agatha as I shouldn't need to many X Specials to kill Dragonite with Ice Beam.

Rival:

Here's where things get really interesting as I can't exactly remember what his team is. I know mine has Flareon though which means I'm thinking of trying to mostly sweep with Venusaur. He should lead with Sandslash. Depending on how hard Earthquake hits I might try to put an insane amount into set up. I'll likely restart this fight at least once to figure out what his order is. If Alakazam isn't second then I won't set up at all and lead with Blastoise instead. Then I'll swap in Charizard and try to have him sweep. Mine doesn't have Flame Thrower yet so I'll teach him Fire Blast. My set up for him will be something like 2 X Specials so I at least 2 shot the Eggexcutor, 3 X Speeds to make sure I outspeed the Alakazam, and 4 to 6 X Attacks depending on how easy it is for me to set up. With that many X Attacks Dig should do more damage to Alakazam that Slash with how gen 1 crits work. I have no idea what his water type will be but hopefully Dig will be enough to kill it by then.

If a genie granted me one wish, it would be for Gary's theme to play every time I entered a room. It's the coolest jam in the world.

Just beat Misty with a team at level 19. I trained an Oddish (Soluna) especially for that one.

Shat myself a few times because of Starmie.
Managed to paralyze it on the first turn but it countered with a crit!Water Gun which left my Pikachu with 3HP.
Switched to Oddish, and Absorb was rather effective, but I had to make another switch or it might get killed.
So I switched to Nidorino, and it got crit!Bubblebeam'd on arrival and was left with 7HP.
Finally switched to Rattata which was able to finish it off thanks to paralysis kicking in.

He does the same thing when he has Flareon. Flareon hits really hard too. I wonder which Eevee evolution is the biggest pain, I'm guessing it would be Jolteon. Still at mid level 60's, no matter which evolution he's using it's likely going to outspeed your entire team. I think his Flareon was faster than my Aerodactyl which is tied in speed with Jolteon

I forgot just how few Fire type moves there are in gen 1. My level 20 Growlithe knows Ember and won't learn another fire move until Flamethrower at level 50.

But Flareon's whole thing is that it's slow...

Did Gary changed a little between Pokemon Red/Blue and Yellow? I found him in Lavender Town, but I don't remember him being so "Hey Pal! Keep getting strong!" there

About to fight Koga, wanted to have Dragonite be my flyer but it doesn't learn fly in this one does it...lol Dux has really been pulling through for me as a Cut + Fly mon

Wartortle lv36
Raichu lv35
Kadabra lv33
Vulpix lv29
(Dux w. Fly, Cut)lv 15

Thinking Dragonite + Nidoking (w Surf and Strength) to finish it out, might trade out Ninetales for Arcanine and Alakazam for Gengar idk yet

Ah Fire Spin. That takes me back.

The way I defeated The Pokémon Champion all the way back with the original Red on Gameboy was by use my Charizard to Fire Spin his Blastoise to death. Though the battle was down to the wire and it was literally sliver after sliver of health. One of my most intense gaming experiences ever, honestly.

So i have 3 badges now in my nuzlocke run. until now none of my pokemon fainted. if you want to know more you can check my miiverse profile.
My team at the moment is
Wartortle Kröti
Beedrill Burnie
Pidgeotto Wings
Mr. Mime MARCEL (i bought a abra for coins and traded it)
Arcanine Bobo
Vileplume Rosy

i think my team is well balanced, but i have to do a special training for Bobo and MARCEL. they are at Lv 10 and 20 and the rest of my team has lv 30. i think the rocket hideout will help me to do this.

Man, I want someone to make one of those "Who's that pokemon" quiz websites, except only show the back sprites from Gen I.

Some of these are just terrible:

Can you name some of my team members here?

I remember there was that "project" on 4chan to turn all 700+ pokemon into their old Gen I sprite versions.

Too bad they never did that with the back sprites.

This is the first time I've ever used Mankey and when that sprite popped up for the first time, I thought my game glitched. It looks like a balding Tangela.

I would have thought so too, but it has a very similar tail to Ratata, so I figured it was intentional.

It's hard to find something that beats the Teratoma growing out of Charmeleon, though.

speaking of Tangela, has there ever been a more insignificant Pokemon?

it's been around since the beginning, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about it haha

There's actually a randomizer an individual created that inserts 251 Pokemon out of the 700+ into a Pokemon Red rom and the sprites are Gen 1-styled -- complete with back sprites. It's pretty hilarious to see stuff like Heatran or Durant Gen 1-style.

IIRC, it's the only pure Grass type in all of Gen I. Which is sort of important, since almost every other grass type was also poison, and those weak to the Gen I Psychic lords.

I used Tangela on my last playthrough, just because I like the design. A ball of vines with googly eyes wearing boots!! It's adorable.

Pinsir and Tauros, on the other hand... Totally pointless. I had to search "safari zone pokemon" to even remember their names.

Tangela was one of those pokemon that I loved the art in the guide and on the show, but in game, it looked ugly as fuck. So I never bothered.

Tauros is actually one of the better Pokemon in RBY due to its STAB on powerful normal type moves and only having one weakness.

The only reason I know what this is is because I used one on my last team. I have no clue what all those parts sticking up are supposed to be, though. :\

Except Exeggutor which is conveniently one of the better grass types. I didn't even know it could learn Explosion!

Crazy that Yellow is already #11 on the all-time US eShop chart. Wouldn't be surprised if we get GSC to coincide with SuMo.

I made a huge mistake picked Yellow for my Nuzlocke run. I forgot how much more powerful Surge is and he killed my Nidoqueen (Babydoll) and my Diglett (Quake). Later in Rock Tunnel my Kadabra (Phoenix) did 99% to a wild Geodude and got OHKO'd by Self-Destruct FML.
