Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

Damn, the updated visuals and disabling of flybys (yes!) Is tempting me to try this version.

I usually get somewhere on disc 2 and then stop playing. I need to make it through this game.

Omg that fight scene was so hard with Xbox buttons lmao ^^

Hope we get a swap for those in a mod.

And I got 10000 gil from that.... surely that was not in the original??

Surprised by this version... it's actually not complete shite... finally! :)

Think I don't quite mind the background filtering for the prerendered backgrounds, it can be better but honestly looks ok with the new models, and the game looks pretty nice now in battle. Overall my opinion is positive, but haven't even started playing, tried messing around with gedosato and sweetfx, etc, couldn't get any of them to work :lol.

Both of them couldn't work? I was looking forward to them. :(

Light the Durante signal~!

Made a nice icon to use, since the icon from Steam is a steaming pile of shite.

Every time I save after changing the control scheme, upon loading it goes back to the default controls (I can't stand B and A being swapped). Anyone else have this problem?

In the start menu it does not change, only when you load a save file it changes to what was set in that game file.

But if it's after the menus and after you've loaded into the game and still doesn't change back to what you set to then I'm not sure.

Try running the game as admin.

Downloaded! The fact that the analog is not really analog is irritating, but I can live with that.

How can I fast forward the battle? R2 is auto battle, but all the other buttons do nothing.

Found it, I had to pause. I understand that the Re is the fast forward option and the 9999 attack option, but what are the other two?

Sounds like I would be better off just waiting for a month or so while modders fix the small nagging issues and maybe even improve the base game in some odd way. It's not like I need to play this one on day 1 anyway. There's no rush.

So how do you get a controller to work with this on steam? I see no options on the start screen, and the only things that work are buttons. Dpad wont even let me select "new game"

Hmm, do I get the game on Steam with my 5 year old laptop or do I get it on iOS on my iPhone 6S+. Anyone have any preferences/differences? I'd probably prefer to play on my laptop but my laptop is getting old.

As far as I can tell there is nothing configurable yet.... unlike FF7 and FF8.

You'll have to use a Xinput wrapper most likely.

Maybe they'll patch in something later... maybe.

Working great on DS4Windows and Windows 7. Just need a controller prompts replacement and I'll be golden :)

I'm not sure what's wrong since you said your buttons work. I was going to recommend a video to how to get a controller working for your PC, but it sounds like you've already done that.

I think my specs are hurting a bit. It took a while for Baku's fight to come up for me and I was getting weird lines.

The game natively supports d-input controllers. It's a bit tricky for x-input ones. Yeah, it's kinda ridiculous.

Is anyone else having a problem with the framerate tanking during the FMVs?

FMVs are 15fps just like the original. Menu is 60fps and the rest are 30fps.

The framerate is really unstable for me with the FMV getting stuck on single frames for seconds at a time.

Unity Engine titles. Most of these games only utilise xinput to trigger vibration events while all input detection is performed via RawInput. Unfortunately this poses issues as
Controller calibration is ignored via RawInput.
Unity Engine needs to profile every gamepad hardware and its driver for RawInput to actually work with them.

Well, that explains why I couldn't setup deadzones.

Haha yea it was in the original. Impressing the Queen was so much harder back then with lag. I must've tried 100 times before I actually got it.

yeah the backgrounds don't look too bad in motion, I think they actually blend in ok with the models given that we're on 1080p+ resolution now, it's overall pretty good looking when you're playing.

The GMG deal posted on the front pages pushed me over the edge. This is my favorite of the FF games, so I guess I'll just have to give it another playthrough.

I don't remember the "fastest" option in battle being this slow... I'll have to try it on my work computer again tomorrow because I don't think it was that slow compared to my laptop.

Top three things that need to be fixed ASAP

1) Battle speed increase only (maybe something like 2x, nothing as fast as the fast forward mode, and ONLY for battle, nothing else)
2) Menu restyle, just make it look like the PSX release and not the iOS release
3) Replace the backgrounds with the high res ones that are available where applicable.

I'd really like to see them fix the interface but it will probably have to be modded, if possible. All the mobile ports have those awful interfaces and SE hasn't made any effort to fix them. As far as I know only FF3 has a mod to fix it though.

There are only like 40 of those that still exist as far as anyone knows, and those are just static paintings: they don't have the animation frames, or any of the depth mapping or foreground layering, to make them viable in the game.

I believe in the PC modding community.

There's modding, and then there's re-creating hundreds of pieces of animated artwork originally created by the premier 3D modeling studio of the 1990s. By hand.

I expect the modding community will take all the old PSX backgrounds and apply better filtering techniques to them than what SST did for this release. But I wouldn't hold my breath for anything more than that.

That's more or less the same thing modders did for FF7. I wouldn't expect anyone to put more effort into FF9 than folks have with FF7.

This won't really help with the latter part, but cheatengine has a speed hack that lets you run the game at anywhere from 1.1x speed to 100x or whatever your PC can handle. You could set up easy hotkeys to switch between, say, 1x and 2x and switch to 2x every time a battle is initiated.

I also really hated how they handled the fast forward. Either default speed or fast as fuck. Stupid.

e: well, I guess I hate the way they handled every single one of the boosters. Some customizability would have been nice (like max magic stones without level 99 etc)

Exactly.

Part of me wishes that Lost Art of FFIX thread had never surfaced. It's awesome to see all that production art, but it created unrealistic expectations of what a remaster should look like. Nobody bitches to this degree about the backgrounds in FFVII and VIII on Steam, which both have the exact same problem.

You believe people will recreate all the field map backgrounds in the entire game???

Some dude is recreating 3D backgrounds for FFVII...

Yes but that doesn't explain any of the animations.

Sure modders could replace all of the pre-rendered backdrops, but there is no guarantee the animations for them would remain intact.

That would create it's own separate problem of having the backgrounds look nicer but be completely lifeless due to lacking animations they are supposed to have.

They did it for FF7. They'll just run them through a better filter is all--not actually do much manual work. It's not ideal, but the backdrops that fans upscaled for FF7 are better.

That's fine. But the dude's request above was about plugging the higher quality backdrops discovered years ago into the game. And more. That's definitely more than just running the original through filters.

Recreating != running through filters.

Okay guys. So, FFIX is like the only FF I haven't really played.

Do I pick this up now and play instead of Dark Souls III?

With regards to the source art being reused in game, it's not exactly impossible... Just too ridiculous to be worth it.

The layering issue actually isn't that difficult. You can use the game assets(assuming someone's extracted them) as a mask in Photoshop and recreate the layers that way.

Animation could be recreated by using the portions of the image that change with upscaled versions of the original art. It's also not impossible to retouch the animation frames by hand to make the blend more seamless. Most of the animations had very few frames so it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Ultimately, with sufficient Photoshop skill and free time, it could be done in a seamless fashion. That said, that's a lot of effort for the relatively few backgrounds it would affect.

that puzzling face
"fanbase has a magic button that will get everything done!"

"but Ned, it's way too much work"

"it's okay just get more fans with more buttons"

Weird question. They're vastly, vastly different games. I'm playing both currently, first Dark Souls for a couple of hours and when I get frustrated, I move to FF IX.

I love the new quality to the models and the text. It's beautiful to look at and I love how reactive the game is to mouse input. I do wish the battle menus were a bit more streamlined though - it looks a little bit clunky and obscures the action. You can really tell just how much higher quality the FMVs are though and it is almost like seeing them for the very first time. Excited to play through this gem again.
