PS4 Slim Unboxing Video

Should get rid of the Ethernet port seeing as that's 80's tech, and the 3.5mm audio port on the DS4 seeing as that's 60's tech.
I kid

Still looks ugly to me, hopefully Neo looks better. And ugly or not I'll still need optical out for my MixAmp. 90s tech or not, that setup sounds a fuckton better than plugging my headset into my 2010s PS4 controller.

It doesn't matter if you have an OG PS4 or not, if you're using optical audio in your peripherals and your media set up (which many people do), then this is going to be a kick in the nuts - no matter whether some random on the internet tells you it's 90s tech or not.

The point of the matter is,a majority of users don't use the optical out, so sony took it out for their their basic slim model. optical has largely been superseded by HDMI.

AV was taken out of super slim, and 360 E model, i would not expect anyone to complain about it in this day and age.

If you need optical that much for your PS4, you would get an optical splitter and use that.

I can understand of people being upset by no optical out, but I assume you already have a PS4.

Also, optical out is probably something that a lot of people are not using, so it made sense for Sony to cut this to reduce the costs.

i hope neo looks as nice as this. it's clean, compact, simple, not a finger print magnet. slim models always look nice then their first for me. although vanilla PS4 is definitely their nicest looking launch unit.

How funny, the video is removed by user.

Sony called the YouTuber and said:

I think some of the good headphone setups for the system use it so I can understand why people would miss it.

I don't think it looks too bad. It does look cheaper though overall, I wonder how much they are cutting the price down on this. $299? $279?

That's what I said. It looks cheaply made, because it is cheaper to make. I think they will try to sell it at $249 and the NEO at $399. That's assuming they don't try to bump NEO's specs in light if the Project Scorpio announcement. Sony has to realize that even if they bump the NEO specs, MS still has a year to finalize specs for Project Scorpio and make it even more powerful if need be.

If they care about their Optical stuff they'll buy the old PS4 easy and simple.
No one is point a gun in the head of the buyers so they can choose whatever they want.

I keep reading comments about the optical port being dead and that 'nobody uses it'.

Does anyone have any data to back up this claim?

It's right there with evidence that 3.5mm jacks are holding audio innovation back.

Personally, I think optical is far less used than people on forums make out but even if it's used by 5% of your userbase, it's a dick move to remove it and not provide a workaround.

However, that being said. Compared to the losses on the PS3 fat to slim (that clearly people don't even remember here) it's relatively minor.

There are alot more people who had use for 4 USB slots and an a card reader card slot than people who use optical cable.

Agreed it's a backwards step removing it BUT consider who's likely to be buying this console and consider the Neo will undoubtedly still keep the optical port. People buying this cheaper PS4 this Xmas will unlikely have big sound set ups. It'll be plugged straight into their tv using the tv audio. People likely to have those setups will either have the OG PS4 already or be more interested in getting a Neo.

Sort of the same with Apple and their headphone jack thing, a huge amount of iPhone owners just use the headphones that come with the phone and apple will supply lightning (or maybe even wireless) headphones and that's how they'll manage to still sell a shit load of the new iPhone without headphone jack and carry on as usual despite the hubbub around it.

They probably should have begun to phase it out with the original PS3, then these people with expensive headphones wouldn't be put out now.

Either way optical is 90's tech and it needs to go eventually. If the headphone manufacturers follow suit then everyone will be better off in the long run.

While we're at it, let's just get rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack on the controller. After all, it's 60's tech that needs to go eventually.

I like this design a bit more than the OG, can't lie. But the distance between the USB ports and lack of optical out is ridiculous.
Actually in a vertical position the USB being at the bottom is more ideal, shame the other one is still by the disc slot.

Just a thought but I wonder if one of the slots will be far enough away from the wifi module inside so as to not interfere with their headset dongles. I have my headset dongle on a wire because the console seems to interfere with the signal. Maybe this remedies this?

IF that's the purpose, then it'll be an agreeable change.

What a silly comparison, if the 3.5mm jack had largely been replaced by a far superior jack over the last decade then maybe you would have a point.

something needs to replace it first. HDMI has largely replaced optical, my surround system works entirely via HDMI connections. optical is sticking around just for legacy support essentially. like SCART and composite connections. but generally it's dated and it will eventually be phased out. and if something replaces a 3.5 jack...that will too. if sony's mission briefing was the cut costs while still appealing to the majority of users...this is a good way to do it.

Or keep the one they already have.

The Slim is not intended to be an upgrade, but a replacement of the old PS4. If you already own the PS4 then you are technically not the target of the Slim, the target is people who don't own a PS4 of any description.

Basically the omission of optical out fucking sucks for people who want to use a standalone DAC with the PS4. That is by far the best way to use high end headphones on consoles.

It's the reason why I've never used my headphones on Nintendo consoles.

Exactly, my hope is that Neo has 2x HDMI outputs, which will then become the standard. It's going that way with all the latest standalone players

So my sound bar connects via optical output. How exactly are you guys connecting your sound system with an HDMI cable if the PS4 only has one HDMI port?

No one is point a gun in the head of the buyers so they can choose whatever they want.

That is very dependent on whether they'll sell both together - which they probably won't. This looks very much like the replacement for the OG, not another option.

well said....

I usually just plug headphones up to the controller or use the TV, didn’t know anything about optical port for audio.
