Discoveries possibly not being saved in No Man's Sky

Scrooged

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.
So, uh, are the discoveries actually being deleted or is this just a bug with the interface? Because I find it hard to believe that discoveries are being deleted on their servers.

I had a bug which removed every discovery I ever made, lol. They came back the next day though.

In a way, I'm happy to see the History unfolds. This train wreck known as Sean Murray and No Man's Sky will go down in history as one of the most infamous releases of all times. It's the stuff of legends.

I really hope that this stain follows him wherever he goes.

Wasn't there controversy about this around the time the game launched, and we found out it was because the players weren't actually connected to the servers at the time, so it turned out another player had actually been there first and named it first, or is this entirely different?

Read the OP. A Gaf member tested this minutes ago and watched discoveries disappear before his very eyes.

*EDIT: Whoops. Double post.

Check out one of them in the back (bearded guy in purple) shrugging with nervous smile. He knew what was going to happen. ;)

HAha, this is the perfect cherry on top.

flkraven there are actually two different things being observed here.

- Reddit OP and a couple other users both revisited earlier planets. Their discoveries log shows that they saw and recorded many things on those planets, but in person, it seems like upon warping back to the system the server couldn't find any name data. They're looking at Penishorse in their log and staring right at one on the planet that has its default name again. And they can't reupload to correct this either, because they "already discovered it."

- Top post of the reddit thread and Raist are looking at their discoveries log and noticing that entries are disappearing from it over time, or perhaps as they discover new things. Old things are falling off as they go around finding more. They have not visited previous planets; this is just a cursory glance at the log.

- As far as I know, no one who is seeing stuff fall off their discoveries list has started physically visiting previous systems to see if their stuff is still named server side, despite not being named in their log anymore.

It's just a matter of time when we will find that nothing is sent and saved on NMS servers. The names people sees on already discovered systems are fake too.

I... don't think that explains what is happening here... Does it?

Nevermind, Its not. I originally edited my post and wrote another explanation but I lost it lol.

Seems like a memory related issue. Gotta keep track of them 18446744073709551616 planets and animals.

Just keeping track of Planet names is 18446744.1 terabytes on average (18446744073709551616 * 8 bits into terabytes). That's a recipe for data disaster.

In that case, the whole thing about people arranging to meet up at the same spot and not seeing each other was fake too.

If your discoveries delete after a while, were they really discovered?

Suddenly Infinite Undiscovery as a video game title makes sense. Edit: beaten

I looked back at some of my discoveries on 100% planets and it said I completed it but no names of my discoveries or anything was there. I don't really care that much. It sounds like it's just a bug.

I know you edited it but it's been so damn funny seeing this as the explanation for literally everything that has come up with the game:

"The person probably wasn't connected to the server"

Well lets just say I wouldn't have been surprised if this were the case. Some people just like to fan the flames or are actually unaware of obvious factors that caused the situation.

I'm fortunate enough that paying $60 for this game doesn't really affect me that much. But I feel really bad for the people that can only afford to buy a few games per year and thought this would be the last game they'd ever need. It just doesn't end...

I was happy to recieve $30 trade in for the limited edition I bought. The steelbook is the best one I've seen in years.

Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
I think people were moreso attracted to their own imagination. "Anything can be out there! Outer space is endless!" I don't think they expected cut and paste assets or glorified menu travel.
Or they could have believed any of the developers lies that he was spewing on Tv.

I've been defending NMS on GAF quite a bit. But I have to admit, this is really really shitty, if it's not just a bug. This was one of the biggest features for me, being able to make a permanent impact on the game. Guess it's not so permanent.

Checked my PS4 save and the discoveries are all still there. Gone on my PC save. So this is a PC specific problem, and almost certainly not a design choice.
You double dipped is the real shocking news here.

J/k glad you enjoy it

This would personally make NMS GOTY for me

You don't need to. I didn't. You can just see it happen in the list as you scan new stuff, like I did in the example in the OP.

Ah ok. I'll go back and look at mine. I thought it was related to returning to your starter planet and scanning things.

Edit - so it's a PC specific problem?

lol, no. I'm guessing that poster was in a rush to defend the game and just glanced at the thread... because I responded to him immediately and he didn't answer.

No, I'm on PS4.

Please. I've poured a metric shitton of hours into the game and still seeing new stuff every day. And not just small variations either.

I know those feels bro. I hate the witch hunt and over reactions, but HG making some of us eat shit here. For me it was the whole sky box thing. I have to imagine Sony has these dude's hands tied w legal shiz or something for them not to be speaking about some of these things.

There really is a BENGHAZI feel to the way people are putting on being this upset about this game and focusing on this one guy as some kind of evildoer. It's like, alright, so the game is missing features you had to pay attention to all these little promo appearances to even hear about, but who cares? Get a grip.

I don't see how they would even get around that. Any infinite procedurally generated universe will eventually require a massive save file. I think Minecraft has a size limit for this reason.

I used to think that this type of massive lies can only be achieved by AAA big ass publishers/developers but it's sad that now this has starting to reach indie developers as well : /

They are all human, and humans can and do say massive lies. Hopefully this is instructive to some on how to not market your game and how when you see something in a under served and not complete genre and market you don't get excited until something complete is made.

Or on Colbert, or on VGX, or on E3, or on the freaking steam page itself. But do go on and defend them

You misunderstand what NMS is actually saving.

Changes you make to planets are saved for a short time and/or number of jumps, because if it saved everything you ever destroyed or carved out, that would take up a ton of space. But it will save some of what you do locally, for as long as you are on the planet at minimum. That gets discarded after a while but it's never supposed to be uploaded to the servers anyway, just local persistence for a reasonable amount of time.

Discoveries, though? Naming planets and species, which do get uploaded? That takes up a completely negligible amount of space.

If you think of a page of text as being 80 characters per line, 24 lines, and you assume that the average player will fill one page worth of text with their discoveries...560,000 players is one single gigabyte of text. That's absolutely nothing these days. I mean you could even quadruple both of them, assume the average player fills 4 pages of text, and there are 2.24 million players. That's still only 16 gigabytes.

Minecraft has (had?) world size limits on consoles because consoles have more limited hard drive space than PCs. AFAIK on PC there is no size limit other than the fact that some world generation gets weird when you travel ridiculously far out through hacking. Most world saves are going to be 100 megabytes or less, but they can be multiple gigabytes. I don't think there's a limit, it just keeps saving whatever chunks you pass through as you explore.

And Minecraft has 18 quintillion "planets," same as No Man's Sky. And every world seed can be its own massive save file.
