Sad if he is homeless, though, I can't say I'd be trying to do console gaming if I ever end up there. Would probably be at a library if I didn't hold on to my 3DS or Vita.

how hasn't he been robbed?.

A lot of it is going to depend on what line and leg of the line he's traveling and what time.

If it's ,let's say, the d or the q train going past Newkirk ave towards Sheepshead bay in the middle of the day , it isn't a bad ride at all . But if you end up in East NY or up in the (Da) Bronx at midnight that is not a good idea with that stuff..

How far can you go on the NCY subway? Is there a journey long enough to warrant mobilising your home console and playing it on the train?

When I was in college I always found it easier to study while moving weirdly enough. I would hop on the 2 train at Flabush ave (1st stop for me) and take it all the way up to 241 st in the (Da) Bronx and it was 2 hr 15-30 min ride about give or take. That was a long time ago so they are undoubtedly more efficient now .

Reminds me of the guy who plays Wii U on plane rides.

I played MGSV around launch flying from New York to LA.

Computer version though, simpler.

Yup. Twas fun.

I think on the way back I played House of the Dead 2 and Typing of the Dead and some other stuff. I got in trouble for having the volume on at like 4/100 which made me sad lol.

Yeah the above ground train going to Coney Island in the summer is not bad.

Nah subway speed stay the same, forever. It'll be designated National Historic Landmark soon.

Who is going to to rob a dude that looks like that on a subway for a 10 year old console that you can't pawn for more than 40bucks? I'm not from NY but that dude clearly looks destitute to me. He might not be homeless in the classic sense of the word but he looks needy. Maybe he's making the best of his long travel.

Just noticed his shirt is different in the video than in the photo. Couple that with the 3 large bags while playing 360 on a full sized screen on a subway and I feel we can safely eliminate long commute.

Don't know how many beds NYC has for destitute men. If its anything like Philly (less than 300) he's just biding his time or something.

I wonder if he's just riding on the subway all day long playing games as if he has nowhere to go. I kinda feel bad for the guy. Maybe he has a terrible home life or something and uses the subway to get away.

Someone needs to seek this dude out and interview him.

Nah not at all. I see it all the time. I volunteer and feed the needy in the subways of Philly all the time. I hope he's just chillin' but in my experience, that amount of baggage means nowhere to go.

I remember 13 years ago I saw some guy on London Tube with a laptop playing a FPS, probably Unreal. Just using the touchpad for mouse.

Some passengers were sighing

There are outlets on the trains here in philly. People charge there phones and laptops on the EL train all the time. I'd assume the NYC Metro is pretty much the same.
Nope. No outlets in trains.BUT there's outlets at train platforms. Which he can use to charge whatever portable battery he's using

He's poor, like almost 14% of US general population. So no proper health care, education and a lot of junk food. Maybe he is also homeless like the ~2 million street children in the USA. I bet his story is not that original.

If he really is homeless and carrying a set up like that around he's definitely living an original story.

Bronx to Brooklyn or Queens can take almost 2 hours. Staten island can be longer because you have to get on a boat or bus but no way is this guy going through the hassles of making that transition.

We don't have that. Manhattan has been getting pretty good wifi though. A rare amount of people Im noticing can still maintain phone calls underground in midtown section.

Hes fine just a big guy, im sure there are plenty of guys his size on GAF if we are talking weight. If we are talking mental stability we have no idea what his mindset is.

I saw this post last night before I went to bed and I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I don't know if you are joking but in case you aren't I felt like I needed to say a couple things. And please, don't take this as me trying to shame anyone.

There are a lot of people who are big guys, and it's getting to be a normal thing, but normal doesn't necessarily mean safe or healthy. Being overweight really does significantly increase the risk of many health conditions. This info from the CDC shows that obesity increases:

  • All-causes of death (mortality)
  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)
  • High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
  • Sleep apnea and breathing problems
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast, colon, kidney, gallbladder, and liver)
  • Low quality of life
  • Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders4,5
  • Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning

Obesity creates new health factors and complicates existing ones. There is such a thing as a healthy weight for a reason.

I wouldn't say that he is fine at all in terms of his size. He may be "ok" with it... But after having a very close friend who nearly died from obesity I would have a terrifically hard time believing it.

Anyway, I just wanted to speak my mind about that. Sorry if that's not what you where implying.

I really do hope the guy gets help health wise at the very least.

My take away from this is that it looks like NYC subway is safer than DC/MD subway... How is that possible?
Look up the per capita crime rates of both cities. It's not surprisng in the least.

Old, gritty NYC is a thing of the past.

NYC also has very transit heavy police force.

Maybe in Manhattan there are transit police in every station, but if he's riding in the other boroughs then he's eligible to be jacked at any time unfortunately. NYC is just a cesspool.
And the police are so incompetent that they'd probably never catch the culprit anyway.
What NYC do you know?

Man if he's struggling I would give him my old gameboy advance or psp. I had some pokemon games and other stuff. He shouldn't have to bring all that just to play some games on the go.

Is there some back story I'm missing? Why are so many people in this thread assuming he has mental health issues or is homeless.

I was shaking my head at that comment myself. There are less safe areas but the city is drastically better than the 80s and 90s. You can do so many things without getting messed with in more neighborhoods now.
Even the "bad" areas are pretty damn safe today.
