Nintendo, acknowledge this game and think.
Looks great, not so keen on the path being blocked off though, that seems an odd addition.
Taxman basically said that's because the game wasn't finished.
One of These days ill master it for finhing metropolis with easeGuy's playing fine. Complaining about the guy getting hit a few times is just part of the "1337 G4m3r" attitude. Getting hit is a mechanic in the game afterall
One of These days i'll master it for finishing metropolis with ease
I've noticed this too. It kind of makes the series go in two seperate series:Yuck. I see they're still using that modified Sonic CD sprite.
Sonic's sprite got overhauled l in Sonic 3 for a very good reason:
Sonic's design had evolved, and the larger hands, eyes, and feet made for a more cartoon-like Sonic, which I think helped bring Sonic 3's cutscenes to life in a way that Sonic 2 and CD's hedgehog couldn't. For what was pitched as a "missing Sonic game from the Saturn era", they could have just stuck with the design that SEGA had switched to rather than reverting to an old one that didn't reflect the small changes Sonic's design underwent in the official art.
Wait.
What is this game? Why am I just hearing of it? Why does it look amazing?
This is a must buy for me already.
A nice extra if they had the time would be a choice of classic Sonic skins. Maybe with the disclaimer that'll you'll miss out on certain animations if you use them.
I've noticed this too. It kind of makes the series go in two seperate series:
Sonic 1 --> Sonic 2 --> Sonic 3 + S&K
Sonic 1 --> Sonic CD --> Sonic Mania
What's wrong with that idea?
If the concern is expressiveness, it's easy to say that Sonic Mania's sprite sheet has Sonic 3's beat into the ground. There's simply more going on.
Out of the classics, I liked 3's sprite the most, but I can't say I have a big problem with any of them. Very good design. I don't mind Mania's brightness either.
I'd say that the S1/CD/2 batch (I think 2 got slightly longer legs) looks more Japanese and neutral in terms of art style than 3's.
what's the fourth sprite?Sonic 3 is still the only Sonic whose mouth is shown in his default standing position:
I hear what you're saying about Mania being more expressive overall, but I do think the lack of a clear expression makes a difference.
Yeah, that's one way of looking at it. I mean, there's no denying what an enormous Sonic CD fanboy Taxman is, so thinking of it terms of that progression kinda makes sense.
what's the fourth sprite?
Is it a nostalgia thing or are there reasons to prefer a less expressive sprite with flatter shading? Genuine question. Not trying to be snarky, despite how it may come across.I always liked 1/2/CD sprite more than 3 so I'm ok with Mania.
Either one of the Game Gear games or Sonic Pocket Adventure. Not sure.what's the fourth sprite?

For reference:
S3's expression is killer here.
It's Sonic Spinball. Terrible sprite.

The S1-style sprite looks better in every way.
Seems to be a minority opinion though.
Oh please. Their DOOM video was trash but there was nothing wrong with what was shown here. They played classic sonic like you're supposed to play it. They knew the franchise as you could see them going down known alternate paths in green hill to see if anything had changed, etc. and exploring is part of the fun. It's not some "gotta go fast" gameCouldn't watch all of this...the guy playing is just absolutely terrible. Why on earth does a professional outlet send people who obviously don't have a fucking clue how to play games out to do previews?! Fucking hell, get your act together.
That said, the game looks amazing.
Using a Sonic 3 styled sprite comes with a bit of baggage, for one it'd look pretty out of place in Green Hill, and they're definitely going for a more wild aethetic of 1, 2 and CD. S3K tried going a bit more "realistic".
Sonic 3K is a fantastic game, but not a huge fan of that sprite. I'm keen to see what they do with Knuckles in this game. He does look out of place when connected to Sonic 2 -- i'd love to see what Knuckles looks like ina more Sonic 2 style.
Eh, not exactly a fair comparison when the Sonic 3 sprite is from an animation sequence that doesn't exist in Sonic 2/CD:

Yeah his Sonic CD love may be clouding his vision for Sonic Mania.
They seem to be going for a more abstract style with the new zones, but the game will still contain remixed zones from Sonic 3&K.and being as they seem to be going for a more abstract art style more akin to S1 & S2 the older sprite style makes sense.
I also think the S3 sprite never quite matched the character design
But they already said the game will feature zones from Sonic 3&K, so you gotta wonder how well a Sonic CD styled sprite will fit with that game's more realistic style.
Is it me or is the guy playing really bad at this? Makes it annoying to watch for me, though the game looks great regardless.
Sonic Mania has digital-only written all over it.I think Sega are capable of releasing games physically still. Not totally sure, but it seems most likely.
I can see them doing a simultaneous digital and physical release. The game looks big enough that it'd warrant a disc, just at no more than $20. Sonic is a brand that benefits from being seen in as many places as possible, much like Mario. I wouldn't be surprised if SEGA release a disc alongside the digital release. There's a market for it and plus it'd simply be more exposure for the character and brand. I'm sure that people who have fell off the franchise, seeing a new classic style game boxed right next to the more gritty looking 3D game would be excited to see that there's still stuff out there for them.Sonic Mania has digital-only written all over it.
