Hey you know why people always say "this helps Trump?"

Because the democrats don't have a great answer for foreign-born terrorism. Trump has a crazy, extreme answer (round them up, kick them out, stop immigration), but at least he has an answer.

Clinton's response was really weak. DiBlasio was weirdly avoiding calling it terrorism, instead calling it "intentional."

Yeah by tiptoeing around that kind of stuff, you let Trump create the narrative that he's the only one who really cares. Same thing happening in Europe, right-wing parties are gaining support because the left is perceived as being too "PC" to talk about real issues caused by the refugee crisis.

I also have a feeling that a Trump presidency is exactly what ISIS wants, where the continued profiling and disgusting treatment of Muslim people drives more of them to sympathise with their organisation abroad due to harassment by Trump.

I don't think they want a Trump presidency, but it would certainly bolster them just the same. It really just comes down to hatred fueling hatred. Nothing about it needs to be calculated. An act of violence drives hatred against muslims, and muslims in turn feel persecuted and are more easily radicalized to acts of violence. It's a tried and true cycle of hatred that's played itself out many times over the the centuries. Trump just happens to represent that hatred this time around and would provide a mechanism to artificially boost it.

I hate having to point this out but clinton called it terrorism this weekend

“I strongly condemn the apparent terrorist attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York. I pray for all of those who were wounded, and for their families. Once again, we saw the bravery of our first responders who run toward danger to help others. Their quick actions saved lives. Law enforcement officials are working to identify who was behind the attacks in New York and New Jersey and we should give them the support they need to finish the job and bring those responsible to justice - we will not rest until that happens. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack in Minnesota, and this should steel our resolve to protect our country and defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups. I have laid out a comprehensive plan to do that. This includes launching an intelligence surge to help identify and thwart attacks before they can be carried out, and to spot lone wolf attackers. We also need to work with Silicon Valley to counter propaganda and recruitment efforts online. Americans have faced threats before, and our resilience in the face of them only makes us stronger. I am confident we will once again choose resolve over fear.”

Is this tip toeing?

I have full confidence in the US police unlike the french police where they weren't allowed to raid the attackers house on the night of the attack because it was already too late at night, raids are only allowed beginning 9am in the morning :/

What? Is this for real?

If true, this fucker just made life difficult for a lot of innocent muslims in the US, and increased chances of a Trump presidency. Unbelievable.

Yep, which is exactly the intent of ISIS and anyone carrying out acts in their name, they want innocent Muslims to feel alienated and isolated in the west so they will leave to join the Caliphate (at least that's the PR line).

It's sad that we in the west play right into their hands.

That's exactly the point for islamists (if it's confirmed this is the cause of the bombing). They want a war of civilisation, they know exactly what they are doing.

Yep! I am not a Trump supporter but he does say some extreme shit that people want to hear. As I've stated, there will be a lot more bombings if he gets elected. Get ready. If you think he's going to stop them, take a look at Europe. They've gotten worse. You treat people like shit for too long, they will show you shit.

Yeah. It's almost unnerving how that's a weird area to attack. Though if he's from new Jersey there's a path station right near where the bomb went off.
That was my thought as well. That's the only thing that sticks out about that block to me.

I live in Jersey City and neither my gf or I got alerts on our phones. Cops must think he's in NYC.

Clinton doesn't have an answer for murder! Clinton doesn't have an answer for sexual violence! Clinton doesn't have an answer for financial crimes.

Crimes happen. She has a plan though people are still going to commit crimes.
I think he's saying that she's not been great at articulating that. Democrats in general have not, including Obama. DiBlasio is proving this too.

Obama just lectures people to stop being racist. Not very inspiring or effective and I like Obama generally.

I am speaking about domestic terrorism specifically.

It's true that perceived weakness gives rise to the other extreme, which we have seen with the rise of Trump, Duterte, right-wing parties in Europe.

With that said, what is a viable solution to terrorism? A certain percentage of young men within various groups can be influenced to become terrorists. It's relatively easy to make a bomb. What is the solution? Trump's lumping the 99.9 innocent Muslim community in with the few outliers certainly isn't a solution. There's no real way to stop selling the components needed to make a bomb. Mass surveillance, which is fairly commonplace is both unpopular and not all that effective as there are never enough people to sift through the data.

The answer is probably to work with law enforcement better, facilitate better information sharing between agencies, provide funding for anti-terror activity within law enforcement, etc..., which is all being done already. In other words, I think it's more about how people speak about the issue than what they propose.

Really? That's a crazy fucking policy. Is it only when there is strong uncertainty or just a blanket rule that would prevent them from entering a house with known terrorists until the time is convenient for everyone?

that's a crazy policy.

in the US they just bust it down anytime and then shoot up and kill innocent kids sleeping on the couch and elderly folk asleep in their beds, which is a much better solution.

The "left doesn't acknowledge the problems" is one of those most annoying tropes today in internet commentary.

It's wrong, and pretty much just saying "they don't propose racist solutions so they're gonna lose!"

It almost doesn't matter if they do or not at this point, the perception has been created and it'll be hard to shake off.

Yes, because those are the only two options out there. I agree that police in the US are too aggressive. They break into homes for less significant offenses. They are careless and break into the wrong homes. They are too prone to shoot when they are in the homes.

That does not make the Belgian policy of leaving a known terrorist alone all night to escape any more reasonable.

If you're more worried about how this information makes your side look bad, or reduces your chances of a political victory, and rationalizing your reactions to fit that context, then you may need to take a break from this election for a few days.

MORE: Ahmad Khan Rahimi was born in Afghanistan, is a naturalized US citizen. Possibly part of a larger cell in NY & NJ - @Joyce_Karam

This been posted?

I hope they catch that asshole before further damage is done. Preferably alive.

That's honestly the long and short of it. There's no evidence that all these strong man solutions would be practical in any way, while their financial and civic cost could be enormous.
These are problems with no easy, short term or very visible solutions. This is not to say they don't exist, they're just not as easy as "deport all the brownies".

If people really wanted to pin any of this on Democrats, they should complain about the disastrous Middle East efforts of the last fifteen years, but that would mean throwing the whole GOP establishment under the bus as well.

Nope. I heard speculation about the Elizabeth package possibility being a dump rather than something planned. Like he was trying to bail.

They've been looking at this guy since September and raided his or his parents house yesterday. My guess is they fear him running and want to have 8 million pairs of eyes

Right, there's that PATH station on 23rd and 6th, which would make a little more sense.

She's campaigning on the most left-wing platform in Democratic party history.

Is she Sanders level left no but she is left wing

Alt-right is social conservatives with a strong white supremacist tinge without the religion.

Yes, Hilary is considered Left.

The Alt-Right is a reactionary movement which you find represented with Breibart. Many feel betrayed by the traditional conservative movement.

"Alt right" is a fancy term the group of white racist nationalists gave themselves to define themselves from the traditional right, which used to have a philosophy to government but because they blew themselves up they don't really stand for anything anymore.

Thanks for the info!

I havent read the term "alt-right" until a month or so ago, so i guess it's something "new".

Is it wise to name this guy?

Shouldn't they you know, track him down in secret first.
I think a good question is:
Is it wise to turn idiotic America into emergency deputies?

RIP Ahmads in 51 states. RIP any dude who looks 'out of place'. Dudes getting thrown off of planes because your local 'support' can't tell the Koran vs light reading or, when better, an Italian professor from Bin Laden.

I'm all for catching this dude but the 4th Amendment gets shat on during this process, I'm guessing.

It's always a calculated risk by law enforcement that depends on the situation and evidence they have. Alerting the public might give the perpetrator a heads up, but it also gives them public eyes and ears. Also, the guy is already on the edge, and knows he's being chased. He's not going to sit back and think the police aren't onto him.

The police can't be everywhere at once and see everything. Isn't it better to have 30M people looking out for him? In these situations, people are usually caught after tips come in. Once you've identified a person and you've searched their last known address you put our a notice for all citizens to call in if they see them. Despite all the bad tips that end up coming in, its still the most effective way to find someone.
