EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060 BIOS Update

Well, you might be able to tell by just shining a light through the card and see if there's gaps that way, if you're already taking the card apart you could always take off the midplate and see if contact is being made that way. If you can tell it isn't you can first check to see if the plate just needs a little more tightening and see if that helps if not you can probably go to a local computer store and get some 2mm thermal padding, the current ones are supposedly only 1mm thick. If it's not pre-cut you can to cut them into 15mm x 12mm bits. That said, the VRAM pads not making contact isn't anywhere near as big of an issue as the VRM one.

Yeah, I was intending to do just that tomorrow. I couldn't do it today because I was at work, but now it seems I don't even need to. EVGA responded to this thread on their forums

Starting next week we will ship thermal grease, memory thermal pads, along with PWM thermal pads in the package. It is recommended to remove the existing grease on GPU and memory pads and apply the new ones. For any customers that did not receive memory thermal pads, please contact us so we can arrange it.

So I don't really need to bother. Another post confirmed that all RMA cards shipped will have the VRM pads, new thermal paste and new VRAM pads.

Dear ravenomega,

I am showing that your request for the Advanced RMA was received and is pending processing. I can confirm that yes, all of these optional thermal mod updates will be applied along with the recommended VBIOS update prior to shipment.

I'll probably give it a few days to see how things play out with the replacements people get. I'd like to keep my Samsung memory card, but I've never actually taken a card apart so I'm not sure how well I could get the pads and everything in the proper place.

I wonder if they'll be willing to refund the card. Bet resell value for the affected ones will be absolute arse compared to competing AIB cards because those picking one up in a year or two will exactly now about the shit that happened I assume and try to push price down.

Just now read about the VRAM stuff, all these oversights are incredible. Especially at that price point.

Updated, hardly hear any change, but temperatures are about 8C lower.

Still, i think, will be ordering thermal pads.

I hate noise, I ordered pads a few days ago. Just gonna take my chances and wait rather than hurt my low noise levels on the ACX cooler.

That's good to know! I wonder if they're still going to send me mine since I'm getting a replacement which I hope is at least on par with my current card.

Taking apart the card and doing this isn't really difficult to do and if you don't get the pads right in your first attempt at putting them on you can pull it off and try again. It'd be worth it to keep your VRAM.

You can see the process here.

Doesn't include the VRAM pads obviously but it's the same process, you'll just have to take off the midplate too.

for anyone that has the GTX 1080 SC and didn't install the thermal pads what are your temps running several multiplayer rounds of Battlefield 1? curious..

I have one with id 08G-P4-6183.

My temps in 10 minutes of 99% GPU utilization in Shadow Warrior 2 got up to 66C, but generally were slightly lower, like 1-2C in average.

i installed my own thermal pads and after playing a few games of BF1 at 1920x1080 + 200% resolution scale with Ultra settings are steady at 68C but im not sure if that's due to the pads or if it was the bios update.

First the 970 fiasco and now this crap, its starting to make me sour on pc gaming. I just dont get all these corners they keep cutting.

Stuff like this makes me want to just stick to console and their negatives.

Just went ahead and called EVGA to start my RMA. Was off the phone in less then 5 minutes with an update to my EVGA account and see the RMA pending approval. I have the space on my card so figured its worth it to just have them send me one that fully updated with all the new pads. Love EVGA customer service.

It's been like this for ages, it's nothing new. You could also say that about consoles too since they have their share of problems

Wait, I just got my stepped up 1080 a few weeks back. It's broken now? Do I have to just update the bios or do I really have to take the entire card apart? wtf :(

If I RMA, will EVGA send me the new card before I sent the old one in? Sending in the 980 took forever.

Yeah I've been PC and Console gaming since the 80's. I've gone through all of the ups and downs with both sides, just kind of getting annoying now with what EVGA did with the 970 heat pipes and now this to cut corners.

If you bought within 30 days, they'd send you a brand new replacement. They send you the card first, you then send back yours in the box with the included prepaid label - in the US at least. Do need a credit card to register with a $1 authorization in case you don't return it within 14 days.

Unless you're a silicon lottery winner I'd do the RMA. If you did get a really good one I'd do the pad application.

The authorization amount when you put in your credit card info is locked in and not an amount that can be changed. People have been concerned because normally they charge you full msrp for the card to do the cross ship, this is just showing that it's only a dollar like they said it would be.

I didn't say it would change, I said I'd get another authorization for the full amount later on. This has happened to me usually when I preorder something early at Best Buy or Gamestop. If EVGA isn't doing this though, then yeah that's a good thing. I must've missed where they said it would only be a dollar authorization. I was just repeating what I've heard elsewhere.

Thermal pads requested. Thought it over and decided I don't want to play the silicon lottery again with a 1070 (I already lost it once buying a Gigabyte 1070 Windforce). My card has Samsung memory, overclocks very well, and has no coil whine. I can't imagine the odds of me getting a similar (or better) card are very high.

Think I'm just going to rma mine. Super annoyed that the first time I upgrade my gpu I have to deal with all this.

Shoulda stuck with Zotac, my little 970 never had a problem but everyone kept harping on about EVGA's warranty so I went with them.

RMA'd mine, hopefully the wait isn't too long.

All right, I initiated the RMA process and I think it's going to go off without a hitch. Thanks for the advice.

I have a 1070 EVGA, it says superclocked on the box...how do I know if this affects me?

I don't know if they made any Pascal cards GTX 1060 and up that don't use the ACX 3.0 cooler besides the "Founder's Edition" cards and the hydro cooler (whatever they're called ) cards with a closed circuit liquid cooler on it. Unless you have one of the those, I think this is something you need to pay attention to.
MQrLecg.png

Your card uses the ACX3 cooler and is listed here, so you might want to look into your options
http://www.evga.com/thermalmod/
Check the part number of your card and look at this list and visit this page so you can see what options are presented to you.
You might be able to look at your part number in the Nvidia Control Panel, but I don't know if these are the same "part numbers." (Nvidia Control Panel"->System Information on bottom-left -> scroll all the way down.)

Okay, thanks for that. My number is the same as the highlighted one in the image actually... what part number is affected? Mine is G411 0020. Not great with hardware stuff, any help is appreciated!

every card on that list above including yours.. the thread title and the very first post cannot be more simple to understand.

Is that what it says in the Control Panel? Never mind then. I thought there was a way to check the part number they're referring to without having to like... dig out a box or something. Just make sure at the very least you do the VBIOS update. From what I understand it'll raise your fan levels if you're using a default fan curve so it might be slightly louder, but it supposedly will keep the card cool enough.

You can order the thermal pads kit too, or if you're not comfortable send it in to have another (possibly refurbished card with them installed) sent back to you. They say that this is "optional" though.

Your part number appears to be 08G-P4-6173, which is on the list. Click here for your firmware update.

He was given incorrect information from Justinh. Not his fault. I know it's the internet, but try to be nice? This stuff can be confusing for people.

What a shitshow. I was willing to give them a kind of pass on the VRMs but now this and they continue to insult everyone's intelligence by calling them "optional" thermal mods when it's clear that they're not.

It's weird... What exactly did the VBIOS patch change?

I thought it was just a more aggressive fan curve, but I've already been using an extremely aggressive custom fan curve for the month I've had this card - way more aggressive even than what seems to have been updated with this patch - and yet I'm idling a full 6-8 degrees cooler.

Still a noob :p what does this mean for the card itself and how do I tell which one I have?
If you use a couple of different programs (most just use GPU-Z) you can see a bunch of information about your card. Samsung memory has been shown to, on average, over clock higher and with less errors.

Samsung memory might overclock better. Use free program GPU-Z to see which brand of memory your card has.

I'm kinda glad now that evga cards were so limited in supply when the 1070 first came out. Probably would've gotten one of those ACX 3.0 cards if they were readily available. I bit the bullet on a Founder's Edition, but it has treated me well so I can't complain (paying $405 instead of $450 also helped).

I'm wondering do I need to do this for the 1060 SC I mean the bios update wouldn't hurt.

But I'd assume it wouldn't be effected because of the different design?

I have a 06G-P4-6264-KB, which isn't listed on the site, but the 06G-P4-6264 IS listed on the site. I bought my card and registered it 27 days ago- do I need to do anything?

What's your temperature while running a graphically intensive game?

Just ran the GOW4 benchmark with everything maxed out and it top out at 55C with fan at 55%

Cheap china room temp gauge says its 23.1C in the computer room.

Measured using MSI Afterburner

I don't really understand the issue? My 1070 SC is quiet and runs very cool even when gaming.
This is about VRM and RAM temps which there is no software temp readout for.

I hit up EVGA earlier today, asking for a refund. I don't think it will happen but considering their alleged superb customer support... perhaps there's a chance.

I see.

Just ordered the thermal pads since they are free.

Wouldnt it be better to just RMA the card if it breaks? bonus if its 2-3 years away and they upgrade me to a 1270 :)

I have no interest in getting a refurbished card and betting on the card breaking within warranty time for the chance to get a newer card is quite the bet ;)

I'll just apply the pads if they don't grant me the refund but I'll certainly stay away from their GPU line up in the future.
