I don't care as much about the plot as I do for the character interaction. That's what they can't get wrong, to me.

What I'm looking forward to the most, when it comes to this game's narrative, is the relationship between the chocobros, how it evolves and gets tested through the game, and Noctis' growing up into the role he must fulfill. I'm also interested in the general lore of Eos, especially when it comes to the Plague of the Stars.

I feel like the plot itself getting stupid is easily forgivable as long as it makes for awesome and memorable setpieces/boss fights. If Luna is actually Bahamut in disguise and wanted to destroy the world all along, or whatever crazy stupid bullshit, it won't impact my enjoyment of the game's narrative nearly as much as the traveling/camping interaction between the bros not being interesting past what we've seen already.

I remember when the 4chan leaks started to get confirmed, and a lot of people were freaking out because if that was true, the game would be garbage, and I just couldn't see it. I'm not gonna lie, the way they put some things did sound very dumb, but "dumb plot points" is far from being enough to make me dislike a game. They didn't mention any specific interesting thing, including stuff we've seen in official media later. Like, how can people jump to the conclusion that a game is garbage before playing through the summon setpieces, the boss battles and shit like that? What if Versatile's boss fight is the best shit in the world, would that not count for anything? What if Cor has an amazing emotional moment with the bros in the 10~15 hours of gameplay that the leaker put into a single sentence, would that not count for anything?

The Last of Us, as far as plot is concerned, relies on a bunch of cliches from Zombie Apocalypse stories, but so what? Did anyone really give a shit about the plot while playing through the game? Wasn't it all about the character interactions and the development of that relationship? They had everything,
the cure, the immune child, cannibals
, you name it, but that didn't stop it from being one of the most enjoyable stories I've experienced. Of course, I don't expect FFXV's writing to be nearly as good as The Last of Us, but canceling your purchase because of a spoiler, unless you didn't really have that much interest in the game, sounds completely crazy to me.

If you play only for stories, you should've stopped putting so much faith in Final Fantasy a long time ago. Hell, you shouldn't even be excited for Versus. It was a Nomura game. I love the stories in Kingdom Hearts (at least before DDD), but they're crazy bullshit as well. I love the games because they're great, not just because of the stories. The story serves as a great framework to give context and meaning to what's going on, as well as demanding unique gameplay scenarios such as boss fights, but if you try to just tell anyone not interested in video games the story in Kingdom Hearts, you'll get embarrassed half-way through, and probably say something like "but playing it it's a lot better, I swear".

Not having interesting end-game optional content would without a doubt be a much bigger disappointment to me than the story. Strangely enough, my favorite story this generation is Bloodborne, and I can't see any story-driven game being more interesting to me than that any time soon. Maybe Persona 5, but eh, not so sure, even though P4 is my favorite game ever. Bloodborne was a masterpiece.

Help me I'm thinking of trying to find a copy from the middle East and send it back here.

Or cancel my digital preorder for the official game release on Monday midnight. So many potentially bad decisions.

...

Any good games I should play on the Pro while waiting so I don't do anything stupid?

Wait didn't MGS5 get a Metacritic in the 90's despite apparently having a terrible story with bad writing (just basing off what I've heard) and poor pacing, in a series that is heavily focused on plot?

*trying to find hope in a 90+ average*

Gameplay was the best in the series, and Kojima does have Kojima factor (where people lose their shit over anything he touches).

But yes, MGS5 story was an absolute disaster, and that's even by MGS standards. Heck, I like the make believe and whacky in MGS1~4, but 5 was just utter bollocks. It's my least favourite MGS game, but I do have to admit its gameplay blows all the others away.

The real question is which of the 10 year old games will get better metacritic scores, FFXV or TLG?

Probably FF15. TLG is going to get crucified by the elite gaming reviewers/journalists for not having COD twitch controls. We already know the complaining has started from previews that it controls like a Team ICO game.

I'm sure the story will be decent, from the trailers/demos and Brotherhood alone I've connected with its characters far more than XIII's cast.. or even XII for that matter (I like XII a lot though and Fran is <3).

I believe in the high 80s low 90s meta!

Holy shit judging the story based on a guy in Peru leaking stuff to 4chan and he hasn't even finished the game yet.

How about we experience the whole thing for ourselves and then we can judge? You're better than that, gaf.
i hope

Also it's interesting to notice that in my country many are trying to get the Pro in time for FFXV.

Unfortunately stocks are very low in Malaysia (only 200 units have been shipped) so the natives are getting restless. What a time for FF.

Well that is advice for every game :p

I just personally think it's not bad preparation to go in with fairly low standards on story given Squares recent output on mainline FF games (besides the MMO work).

FFXII got a 92 and FFXIII got an 83.

And even that high I put down to the mad desire to wish the first HD FF game be good. Not to mention it was made into such a big thing it was coming to the Xbox 360 that some couldn't handle it turning out to be mediocre in the height of the console wars.

Some of those FF13 E3 Xbox 360 topics on GAF were absolutely insane :p

I am too broke to afford a Pro right now, so I will be playing it on a regular PS4. I don't mind though, the game looks great enough on it.

Since we're doing crystal ball predictions...

I predict an 80-85, with some controversy resulting from the fact that it's scoring similarly to XIII. The actual text of the reviews will read far more favorably though, with "return to form" tossed around quite a bit.

The real question is which of the 10 year old games will get better metacritic scores, FFXV or TLG?

I'm guessing TLG will be very divisive. Mid-70's, maybe.

So the Peru guy is only talking about the spoilers? What about the game itself? I'm surprised we still haven't got impressions from the people playing it.

I think that it'll depend on The Last Guardian. I can't see it being a "it's ok" game. It'll either blow people's minds and be one of the best reviewed games of the year, or be a huge disappointment. I can't see it having similar scores to FFXV either way.

It's insane that we STILL don't know how linear the linear parts are.

I'm predicting an 80-85 meta.

I know people may like the battle system more than I do, but even in Judgment Disc, I just felt that it was way too loose and pretty much absolute chaos in multiple-mob battles. I feel the battle system could have been way, way, way better if enemies actually reacted to your attacks better (and despite a lot of enemies having super armor, I felt that all of the Kingdom Hearts games did this action focused-combat a hell of a lot better).

I don't have a clue what was going on with MGSV

The critics just completely ignored or brushed aside the things that it obviously did poorly. Maybe partly a result of the 'review event' with them presumably rushing through the game.

I got rekt when my Playasia preorder changed from 'waiting' to 'cancelled' so I got back in line too. Mid-December now.

Meanwhile no PS4 on me at home.

Definitely. From what we have seen FF already looks great for the PS4. Pretty mind blowing though because at a local forum I go to some have already bought a 4k TV in anticipation for the game.

So that's like... 2000 dollars just for this game. And here I am just hoping the game quality would just be decent.

I think a JRPG-esque story might be a hard sell for those not accustomed to its style and character tropes.

You have game likes Watch Dogs, MGSV and Fallout 4 scoring in he 80's and 90's range despite have a wide array of flaws in narrative, game design and performance aspects (imo).

Then you have NieR which got hammered by critics, despite many people who played it being grabbed by the story, world and music etc....

So I personally won't be putting much stock in to the critics assessment of the story. I have a feeling it will already be an uphill battle due to the shoddy localization on that front. Since I'm accustomed to writing, character archetypes and will be playing in Japanese, I won't panic if they are critical. I'm far more interested in what they say about the game design.

Garbage story doesn't necessarily mean low mc. It can be saved by other aspects of the game like gameplay and characters. Plenty of examples of this even with games scoring in the high 80s and above.

People tend to forget but the highly glowing reviews all came from a review event held by Konami.

The scores once the game was out were lower in average than the beginning reviews.

Fully agree. The characters, the world, and just the general experience of playing the game is why I love FF. The story is important too of course but for me, the characters development and how they interact with one another is the driving force for me. It's why I could never get into XIII; it was filled with unjoyable characters and weak character interactions on top of an even weaker plot in my opinion. If I looked at VIII story objectively, the time compression storyline is probably a bunch of bullshit but I love the characters, the world, music, etc. enough that it didn't matter in the end.

That would be awesome as fuck imo :p

Fallout 4 recently. The story is so bad that when I got to a certain part I quit out of the game and uninstalled it.

hopefully the frame pacing issue can be fixed by when the games comes out, i literally couldn't finish bloodborne because of it

Kojima effect/review event/Mass support for it to be good due to Konami's treatment of Kojima and just "mild fanboyism" that means reviews shat out at speed for day 1 don't necessarily reflect as well as completing a game and allowing yourself to think about it for weeks.

Yeah FO4 is absolute trash compared to New Vegas, however gameplay is pretty decent. Again though I think some reviewers just get caught up in the hype of wanting something to be amazing and going through a stage of slight disbelief when calculating thoughts just after completing.

It's just the hype machine in full effect. Happens to normal gamers, see any GAF review thread for a big game when it just comes out. Usually a month or so later people are less vicious to defend something after they've played it and let their real thoughts stew for a while.

How the hell did it get cancelled. Anyway for Malaysia the best bet is to preorder from a local Sony store. The authorised PlayStation retailers here (Gamers Hideout, Heavy Arms, Impulse) are fully booked with preorders coming late November/mid December.

I dunno, maybe related to how a huge-ass shipment through official channels suddenly dropped to 200 units with a massive backlog now, heh.

Regardless I'm set on my December unit. It's good to be king.

In defense of that game...the gameplay was sublime.

Didn't find jumping between characters or the flashbacks an issue. The "anime acting," aka the dialogue, yes I found an issue with it. It was weird. There were some scenes where the dialogue actually flowed really well IMO and then there'll be a scene where almost every line is cringeworthy. Then there'll be another scene with believable-sounding dialogue. Then cringe. Rinse and repeat. It was strange.

That cutscene involving Sazh and Vanille with Vanille more or less saying:"hey, this is my spot to sleep, you stay there, don't try to touch me when i sleep,ok?". So awkward and embarrassing.

Rage barely has any story and it scores 79. Telltale's The Walking Dead barely has any gameplay in it and it scores 89.

Video games doesn't have to excel in everything to be scored high.
