Let's talk about sexualized men in gaming and lack of diverse body types

Well the majority of people like fit bodies. So your big budget games aiming at doing big sales are going to aim for that platonic ideal in terms of body depictions, with whomever their target audience is. Sorry boutcha.

Hmm, I'm finding it hard to find stats about what young, straight American males think is ideal (because guess who's designing your video game characters).

I found what a random American graphic designer thinks is the ideal male body type:

And what a bunch of straight young British college males think the ideal body type is:

In this image, the men designed C and D.

(The asthetic in the UK has always been thinner that the asthetic in the US based on media created in those regions.)

But nothing that took a group of hypothetical dude bros and had them measure out the perfect body.

You do know that it's possible to have fit types AND other types in the same game right? There's no excuse. That's what this thread is getting at in the first place.

If it's about queer, where's the lesbians, the trans?
Did you skip over the "male" part of the thread?
While that does rightfully include a large number of Trans folks we're discussing the representation of male bodies here.
Female body type representation is a great and important conversation to have but that's not something I think should be the focus of a thread on men...

Butch les? Are we discounting bi/pan now?

Masculinity isn't simply male. Don't kink shame.

Okay. But the op, while not great, doesn't have the problem of being unclear in what it's about. If you think this topic should be circumscribed differently, maybe you should make your own thread/op where all of that can be made explicit from the beginning so the form of the discussion can follow from that, instead of simply taking umbrage with a relatively transparent discussion already taking place.

This was pretty good although again really baggy pants. (Pool Party Graves, League)

*high five

I'm mostly into it cause of the body hair, the muscles are meh. I just want more body hair in gaming or in media.
Been watching Buffy lately and got all giddy when I could see Warren's chest hair coming out ... good times.
Going to check out that Bastard Bonds game, seemed interesting >_>

Okay, so...

1). Vaan's abs and Fran's butt will be looking better in the FFXII remaster? How did I miss this?

2). And speaking of butt, I'm curious to see the man butt people were raving about. Please PM.

Man, what an utterly transparent shitstain of an OP. Thread is suspect as fuck.

Luckily, it's a subject that a good amount of people have a legitimate interest in. So whatever the OP's original intentions, the thread seems to have gone in a decent direction.

I'm one of the people that really likes Vaan's design, even though I'm more into "dad bods".

He is a young teen. Like many teens, he doesn't look over masculine. Also he lives in a desert city and is an easy-going guy, so that's quite normal that he only wears a west. Furthermore, he is poor (and therefore doesn't it too much) and I asume that he is quite active. This results that he has abs.
I personally don't see what's wrong with him.

I'm pretty sure OP was trolling but it's never bothered me. I don't play video games to be represented and feel important. I hope the devs make whatever they want to.

i never saw the photos in the OP but i'm gay and into fat dudes. I have zero interest in seeing fat dudes with body types i like in games. it's a game. i have never understood how people sexualise videogame characters.

He's a super obnoxious character, but I can't hate on that torso, mmh.

Also I like his face when he's not pulling a dumb expression.

The same way people sexualize images in movies, comics, and saucy fan art? Hot is hot.

We just need a game about Nightwing

's butt.
OMG this is my jam. Work it.

Wait, hold on, this is actually possible? How did I not know this?

Hwoarang's T7 design and poses are pretty thot
I like Hwoarang but sadly Tekken's male anatomy has been kinda whack since Tekken 5. Even 4's wasn't great. Soul Calibur 4 and 5 have way more appealing models.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I love that in video games, kemono characters kept the bara stuff before human males got a ride with it for quite a while~

Aokage

Pretty nice guy (apart from the blue shadows thing...)
My god this thread is all kinds of spectacular. Too bad a topic worthy of discussion had to be broached in such an... unorthodox way.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bill from The Last of Us yet.

Fantastically written and performed, definitely a nonstandard body type, and oh yeah -- he just happens to be gay. Bill is the shining beacon of thick dudes in video games, not conforming to any hackneyed stereotypes. Sadly, he's unlikely to be surpassed any time soon.

I think he wasn't mentioned because this thread is mostly about sexualized men. The game had references to his
dead partner and collection of skin mags,
but that's about it.

I agree he's a great character. His banter with Ellie is gold in the game. Any other studio would've put in gay panic moments or somehow painted him as abnormal.

This is the way to do token representation but do it right. His story is small but it's moving; it utilizes his sexuality (in that his relationship is directly addressed) but it doesn't make a big deal out of it. They even get in a few yuks about his gay porn without ever having it read as homophobic, which is quite a feat.

And nice to see Naughty Dog move from this to even more central LGBT representation since - unlike certain other developers who have stuck a toe in the water and then regressed.
