I have a preorder for the CE but I don't even know when will I start the game. I'm at the final chapters of Conquest and then Revelation awaits. Love the games, but even though I spaced them between other titles (Awakening in 2015, Birthright in 2016 and now the other two Fates campaigns) I put so much time in them that I feel a little burned. And then we have FE Warriors and FE Switch... This series will be the end of me.

Anyways, nice reviews!

Opinions and all, but I really don't think there are 3 to 4 games better than them.

Looking forward to Echoes. Reviews look good but don't really matter much. It's FE!
I would say Fire Emblem 7
Path of Radiance and
Radiant Dawn.
Even Sacred Stones, if it were longer. That one was a bit short

But true, personal opinion. I just enjoyed the characters and story more then these.

One of the (small) annoying things about Shadow Dragon was that it was easy to tell that it was an updated NES story. With all the praise about the writing and story, it seems like IS updated it much better this time around. Very much appreciated.

Yes but that is back when Fire Emblem was a niche series. Most people haven't played them, reviewers included. I do weep for those who think Fates and Awakening is the best the series has to offer though...
I don't think that Awakening is the best of the series, but I do think that it's an incredible second best behind Path of Radiance. No need to weep for anyone, it's just harmless opinions!

I absolutely love the Awakening and Fates style of Fire Emblem and I hope it's hear to stay for a long long time. The accessibility of Fire Emblem has skyrocketed and I love that it's a huge franchise now. I've played almost all of the Fire Emblem games and I absolutely think the 3DS era is the Golden Age of Fire Emblem. I look forward to that Golden Age continuing with Echoes!

I solidly disagree. The earlier games could do with the accessibility features like no death mode brought back in, and HDifying of assets for future remakes, but even just from the English releases I'd say

Blazing Blade
Path of Radiance
Radiant Dawn

Are significantly better than Awakening and Fates. Your mileage may vary on where you put Sacred Stones, but the only one I think is potentially worse than Fates is Shadow Dragon, as I was bored and dropped it long before finishing it (a problem that repeated with Fates).

Not to turn it in to a rating thread but mine probably looks like PoR>Blazing Blade > RD > Sacred Stones>= Awakening >>>>>>Fates & Shadow Dragon, in that I'd probably replay the first 5 at some point if they got rereleased on modern hardware somewhere down the line, whereas the last two can burn in a pit forever for all I care.

Most FE fans haven't even played Gaiden, much less hate it. It's just an old game with some interesting ideas that has aged pretty awfully.

I don't think the ideas have aged badly, but there are some bits (like the map design) that are poor compared to the rest of the series.

Aside from dungeons and magic having penalties, a lot of ideas eventually made it to newer games, many of which are now taken for granted.

For example, a world map you can explore, branched and multiple tier classes, monsters, parallel protagonists and stories, etc. These all first appeared in Gaiden.

So many good FE games. That's the bottom line. I can't argue with someone who thinks these are better than Fates et al.

Lol amazon prime. They still haven't shipped the game.

I haven't played them then, and i finished Shadow Dragon, Blazing Blade, Sacred Stones and the Ike games before the new ones.

What if, by accident, people actually do like those two games more than older entries?
Then good for them? If you play some of the older entries and still think Awakening or Fates is the best game in the series, good for you. I'm more talking about the people who haven't played the older entries and just the newer ones.

I like Awakening quite a bit and I think Fates has it's merits, mainly the Conquest route's map design and the fixes for broken mechanics in Awakening. Both of those entries are pretty flawed compared to FE7 or PoR though.

Seems like a good return of traditional Fire Emblem.

Now if Nintendo could keep up with the times and includes dual audio that would be great.

I mean the game itself has aged badly, not its ideas. The UI especially is pretty terrible.

Conquest is great in gameplay. I even really liked some characters.

If it's story was at least at Sacred Stones level. It would've been the best in the series for me.

Conquest maps felt too gimmicky at times, but in general were pretty good and I liked how they nerfed pair ups.

I guess Ill be fine with some open straightforward maps after conquest

So I'm assuming this is more in for people who loved Fire Emblem 7 and 8 and not for those who got into the series with Awakening or Fates? I don't know anything about the game prior to the reveal trailer and this review thread.

Personal ranking for those that I've played: Sacred Stones > Blazing Blade > Conquest > Birthright > Awakening > Revelations > Binding Blade > Shadow Dragon. I'd easily call everything Awakening up fantastic, Revelations is still pretty good even with awful balance, Binding Blade is frustrating, but still fun, and even Shadow Dragon is enjoyable even with its weak characters and awful art. Dunno where I'll put this, but I'm expecting in the middle of the 3DS games at the moment.

Well, unless you hated FE7 & 8 I would give it a try. Just because you liked Awakening or Fates doesn't mean you will hate this game, it just doesn't have some of the features of those games and has other features in their place.

Look I will be completely honest there are plenty of "waifus" in this Fire Emblem if that is your thing. You just wont be having kids with them this time.

Sorry.

I really hope this sells well because sometime down the line I would kill for a Genealogy remake along with Thracia 776.

Problem there is given the plot details of Genealogy... I wonder if they'll ever actually remake that.

I imagine one way or the other, remakes of the Ike and Roy games are going to be higher up the list of importance given they won the Fire Emblem heroes character ballot despite Roys game not even being released in English.

That depends. Why did you like Awakening/Fates?

The accessibility features like no perma death mode are being included this time around, whereas pair up and baby making are gone. Characters still have support conversations and boosts from being near each other, they're just nowhere near as extreme as they made them in the latest two games.

This game seems pretty familiar to when I started playing Fire Emblem. I started with FE7 and it sticks pretty close to that, including having support conversations on the battlefield.

I appreciated Awakening and Fates had great map design but Fates story was so convoluted and 3 games didn't explain it well. The continent of Fates doesn't even have a name.

So I welcome getting to play this one Friday.

My personal rankings are:

Path of Radiance
Awakening
Binding Blade
Fates
Radiant Dawn
Gaiden
Blazing Blade
Sacred Stones
New Mystery of the Emblem
Shadow Dragon

I haven't played the Genealogy, which I really intend on eventually, but those are the ones I've played. Path of Radiance is such an incredible game and Ike is my favorite character in all of Nintendo!

I've wanted a Gaiden remake for such a long time, for the same reason I want a modern remake of Zelda II... and I'm glad we're getting one! I can't get the game right away because finals, but I'll get it later down the line (hopefully the amiibos won't be long gone by then)

Bringing back Sacred Stones style dual protagonists is a plus for me.
I just bought Disgaea 5 Complete so I'm going to be pretty broke this month.

You mean inventing the Sacred Stones duel protagonist theme, lol. Sacred Stones copied a lot from Gaiden/Echoes.

Fire Emblem is such a blindspot in my gaming catalog. Every time a new one comes out I tell myself I'll finally try the series, but I never do.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Really looking forward to playing this. After Awakening and the Fates campaigns it'll be refreshing to play one without pair-up etc again.

Same, really hated how min/maxing my paired and support combos conflicted so heavily with the core combat mechanics. I really started to loathe how often my mind kept screaming at me to forego tactical efficiency in favor of grinding supports.

Buying this the moment it hits eShop.

I dunno.... Heroes takes the incest feeling quite far for some of their characters.... I think Geneology would be able to get away with it if remade.

Lemme ask you this. Do you love, and I mean LOOOOVE, the Fire Emblem romance tumblr shipping crap? If your answer is yes, this game is not for you. If you're a normal person, you should play this game.

This is a pretty bullshit, non-answer. Here's the real scoop:

Do you want a well realized FE narrative with good characters, fun character building and decent strategy mechanics? Buy it.
Do you heavily dislike basic gameplay and horrible map design? Consider passing until the game's on sale. It's one of the weakest modern Fire Emblem games on that front.

I still remember every time a new Fire Emblem was released, the FAQ would always have a question asking if Roy or Marth are the game.

Roy is definitely gonna get a game. And his game isn't bad either, just that he's less of a character then Chrom in it.

I probably would have picked this up, but I just can't be bothered buying 3DS games anymore. It'll be out of stores by the time I would want to buy it. I wish they had done a dual release on the Switch or something. What I've heard sounds mostly promising though.

Playing it right now 7h. It's clearly not the best Fire Emblem by any means especially for its map design, but it does so much things way better than Awakening and Fates. Support for example are shorter but focus on the relationship of the characters and not some stupid things like "hey my cooking sucks".

Maybe. I was actually thinking (BIG FE4:Genealogy plot details spoiler here)
they would probably have more trouble with going through with killing half the cast in a Fire emblem released now rather than the potential for incest.

To be fair, games before Awakening had supports that were literally "hey, my cooking sucks".

Shadow Dragon alone is easily better than Fates.

I'm as big a Shadow Dragon apologist as they come and even I can't totally agree with this. It's better than Birthright, but not as good as Conquest. Haven't played Revelation yet but it's probably better than that one too. I guess 2 out of 3 ain't a bad result.

Anyway, I'll probably get around to Echoes after I finish my current playthrough of Shadow Dragon since they're vaguely related.

I hope this artist works on a FE game again, some of tthe best art i've ever seen for the franchise.

I hope so too, the art is a huge leap from fates. Excited for a classic FE, especially after just finishing Revelations not too long ago which left me disappointed. Story and the hamfisted children mechanic were awful. Excited to pick this up soon.

So supports are like Path of Radiance?

Also I think people forget But "hey my cooking sucks" type supports appear in FE 7 and 8.

Hell, Oscar had to teach someone to cook if I recall correctly

Roy is shitty, though... And he has shitty friends.

Shittier than Micaciah.

They've got some FE1/FE2 growths going on.

I'm pretty sure there's one in Path of Radiance too.

Edit: Just checked. lmao, Tanith/Oscar A Support rank is literally Tanith talking about how she can't crack an egg.

Anyway, none of this matters all that much.

Might be the last 3DS game I buy. We'll see. I just want a good story and tight gameplay. Sounds like the maps are good so that's a plus.

No I think the real problem would be the (HUGE Spoiller FF4)
I mentally control my half sister and do some child with her
part.

Yeah you're right, there are some things like that in older FEs, but it didn't feel like it was always the case or the supports are also revolved around both characters gimmicks*
