Mother (Darren Aronofsky) - early reviews from Venice

Rest assured, this is absolutely nothing like Rosemary's Baby.

I'm still not even sure how much or if I really liked it, but "Darren Aronofsky is extremely back on his bullshit" certainly sums it up.

Really excited to see this, seems right up my alley being both atmospheric & bat-shit insane. Divisive reviews are probably a good thing to be honest.

The best review on RT I can see is:

"A Horrible, Unpleasant, Infuriating Movie No One Should See"
Rating: 0/5 | Diana Saenger

So apparently this movie's an allegory about climate change according to interviews by the director and Lawrence.

Is this true?

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
I just got back from seeing it, and I really don't know what to think. For the first 90 minutes, it was intriguing, suspenseful, and well acted. Then the last half hour hits, and....... I don't really have the words for what I witnessed during that time. I just know that when the movie ended, I was angry. It wasn't a bad film, and I'm glad I knew nothing going into it, but I never want to see it again. Those last 30 minutes felt unneeded, excessive, and still left too many unanswered questions while moving at a pace that is almost too much to comprehend. It reminded me more of The Neon Demon rather than Rosemary's Baby which many are comparing it to.

5.5/10

You're being generous with the 5.5. Great premise, brooding first hour or so, and a
dumb ending that was so far up its own ass to be edgy and conclude the story it was almost laughable.

Yes that and overpopulation, religion, etc. Lots of bible references
Okay that's very interesting then.

Thought it would just be a Rosemary's Baby or House of the Devil retread; or alternatively, just a straight up remake of the former because of how secretive the marketing's been. I'll check this out sometime next week then.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that

That's basically what my friend texted me after they got out of the screening. I don't know if I'm up for rolling the dice unless I have a palette cleanser ready. I might wait a few weeks so I can pair it with something more mainstream in case I think it's steaming basura.

It probably is more Rosemary Baby, but I remember reading DA was a bit of an anime nerd. The bathtub scene in Requiem for a Dream is an acknowledged lift from Perfect Blue. Wouldn't surprise me.

Edit: or well, judging by other posts in here, definitely wouldn't surprise me then

Strange question.
But of those who have seen it:

who of you LIKED this also LIKED Baby Driver?
who of you LIKED this DID NOT LIKE Baby Driver?

I saw it tonight and... YUP. Does it ever.

I'm pretty sure I loved it, even though I'm not sure I could ever watch it again.

Mild Spoilers:
once you get the bigger "meaning" then all the metaphors and such are actually pretty on-the-nose... especially one of the final moments.

This film kept me tense throughout. That's pretty rare.

Some folks are gonna hate it, though. :)

Sounds like Aronofsky, all right.

I liked both, but... I liked this better, and I've felt Aronofsky to be hit or miss, despite absolutely loving his first two films (although I haven't watched either in years)

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.
I really want to like this. Couldn't stand Black Swan but I loved The Wrestler. I'm ready to get back on board.

Man I love movie reviews sometimes

That review is SUPER spoilerific and doesn't even dive into why.
Seriously... people need to avoid reading anything about this flick unless they have zero intention of ever seeing it.
Even reading reviews that don't have spoilers... they're still very spoilerific in the way they talk about it.

Go into it blind.

Bring it Aronofsky. I thought Noah was his only "bad" movie and even then it was an interesting visual package.

I really enjoyed Noah. Visually was amazing and I loved his cynical touch to a biblical story. Definitely heavily flawed. I haven't disliked one of this films yet.

just saw it, i really enjoyed this like Darren previous movies!

this shit was tense! Some things are a bit too much in your face, not as much subtle as i would like, but still pretty great!

I would love to check this out at the cinema, but I both times I went to see Horrormovies, I had no luck with the other movie goers...

I bit on this review out of curiosity and yeah...
I mean, regardless of the context or quality of the film, some people are going to be upset no matter what at the big spoiler in that article.

Not reading recent posts as I'm seeing the movie tomorrow morning, but after seeing the first trailer a month or two ago I' decided to not rewatch it or read anything else about the film beyond the Rotten Tomatoes score (I even turned away when a trailer came on before It last week).

I had a feeling this would be a film where people would "unintentionally" spoil stuff in their reviews so I decided to just do a blackout. It's quite liberating. Looking forward to experiencing it fresh tomorrow.

Yeah, I mean... (big spoiler hint)
THAT bit is pretty fucked up, and people are going to go into this expecting a run-of-the-mill psychological horror movie, for the most part, not... that.
That said...
It makes perfect sense within the story, and Aronofsky is known for being on the nose with his metaphors and such. There's no ambiguity about what the film's about by that point.

Good!! Glad to see some folks are still going into this without reading too much. I knew NOTHING other than what I saw in the first trailer, but heard rumblings from some people that made me decide to see it yesterday before truly getting spoiled, since I had a chance.

Going to see this tomorrow, all I know is what was in the trailer and that the movie is
a climate change allegory

Hope that doesn't diminish anything.

I'm sure it does
make sense within the story. But just saying, some people are going to be so upset by it no matter what that some 0/5 reviews will be inevitable.

Probably going to watch Rosemary's Baby tonight, never seen it before

You're in for a treat. It's really too bad Polanski is a shithead.
