First of all, if you're a public figure, if you want to have a Twitter account, then don't post dumb shit. And if you have a Twitter account before you become popular, and then become a public figure, then go and delete your dumb tweets before you do. It should be known there are nutjobs who will comb through your history looking for dumb stuff you said to try to destroy you because they have no life. How the hell hasn't anyone caught onto this yet? Especially if you're rich. Just hire someone to do it for you.
I don't think any of these people should lose their jobs for things they said many years ago, but if their companies think it'll be bad for business, then I guess they feel they need to do it. Me personally, I think most of these situations would be forgotten about in a week when the outrage police move on to the next thing they are pissed off about. The best way to handle these things IMO is to not address it at all. Don't do anything. The longer you keep it in the news, the longer it's a story. Just bunker down and wait it out. People will forget about it. They always do.
But I think it's funny how we judge people today. I think nuance is lost on how we judge other humans. We hold them up to a ridiculous standard. Everyone has skeletons in the closet. Everyone has said things in their past others may find rude or offensive or mean. Everyone has beliefs or opinions that some people would find inappropriate or offensive or wrong. And if you say you don't, you're full of shit. I love how when people try to defend a person, the mob always goes "But this person said this one time and another time they said that, and another time they said this!" That doesn't make one a "bad person." I feel as long as you do more good than bad and contribute more good to society and to your fellow man than you do otherwise makes you a good person. Now that doesn't mean you deserve some nobility award or are the ultimate role model, but you can still be a good person.
If you know a person who donates regularly to charity, and is always there for anyone who needs his help, is kind to people, a genuine caring person, say they yearly help out the homeless and deliver them food as a good gesture.... BUT they believe being transgender is wrong and unnatural. They do a ton of great stuff, contribute to society in a positive way, but have this one belief... does that make them a bad person? I don't think so. It makes them an imperfect person. It makes them a flawed person. But I think the overall "package" you get with that person makes them generally good and positive influence on society. However, in 2018, the mob will try to paint that person as some awful man regardless of the other positive things he's done. They expect you to have no skeletons, be totally perfect, and your biggest flaw to be a parking ticket. You can't have any biases(now or in the past) you can't have any questions about controversial topics or you're some "EVIL" man. I hear the word evil thrown around a lot today over people who are the farthest thing from "evil." John Wayne Gacy was evil. Get some perspective.
I think if we start holding people to realistic standards, stop expecting people to have no biases, and understand all people are flawed, we wouldn't paint people into these weird categories of being "good" and "bad" and the people wouldn't be vilified at the rate they are now.
