Is a 1070 GTX enough for next gen

Wait till a year or two after next gen drops. a 1070 won't get optimization like the console APU's.
Devs are saying the next gen GPU's are between a 2080 and 2080 ti and that's without all the optimization they will do over the generation.
I'd wait for the new 3000 series.

If you temper you're expectations it'll be fine, you won't be maxing out games anymore and some of the next-gen effects will be out of the question, but I'd wager you'll still be able to actually PLAY a good majority of the games for the next 3 years without issue. Again, it's about managing your expectations though. I have a 1080ti that I'm wanting to upgrade, but I'm confident that I don't NEED to until something worthwhile comes along. You'll be fine if money is tight, I wouldn't worry.

Honestly, I'd say wait until the prices drop, a 1070 is still fairly good.
Unless you're someone who can easily drop some thousand bucks I wouldn't recommend it.

I can't wrap my head around how next gen consoles can perform between 2080 and 2080 Ti, when these cards are extremely expensive. Even 5700 XT is the price of a single console and this card offers 9-10 tflops?

Is a GTX750Ti or AMD 7850 viable today? Because that's very roughly the equivalent of the PS4.

If you would be satisfied running current games on those GPUs, then the answer is yes. Otherwise I think it will be time to upgrade in a couple of years (I imagine 3 years into next gen) A 1070 will probably be a little less than what the new consoles offer. But in the similar ballpark relative to them.

Don’t think so, as most games minimum graphics requirement will be next gen console graphical power which is rumored to be close to rtx 2070..

It's not enought for this gen lmao. Unless you're playing on 720p or something.

the fuck are you talking about?

@topic: yes, yes it is. but don't expect to play games at high settings. expect meduim to low settings at 900p-1080p or maybe 1440p in less demanding games.

is anyone in here in any way knowedglable about PC games? it doesn't seem like it.

what you are saying isn't even true with this gen. you can play games like Destiny 2, Doom or Sea of Thieves on PC cards that are waaaaaay less powerful than an Xbox One for example. the lowest I personally tried these is an 820m coupled with 4GB of DDR3 and an i3 1.5ghz... and they ran... terrible but they were playable.

As a fellow 1070 owner I think we’ll be fine for a while.

1080p with no RTX with some mid/maxing graphic settings you should be able to manage most next gen titles with a steady 60fps.

Couple of things to take into account.

1, The install base for X1/PS4 is to big for game developers to miss out on so cross gen titles will be in the developers targets for a few years to come.

2, PC and consoles are not a 1:1 comparison when you read 12GB of hbm2 Uber ram in the xsx only 10gb is available for games. Whereas in a pc you’ll still have the all the ram on your gpu available for gaming.

3, RTX implementation, there’s still a lot of vague discussion around this point, Sony could go the HW route but Microsoft are probably going the RTDX route so probably a software solution.

4, The big jump in graphical fidelity won’t start for a few years while developers are still grappling with the new consoles and RTX implementation.

Anyway these are my thoughts on the upcoming consoles but I won’t be rushing out to buy one I still have all 3 consoles and a very capable gaming PC. But we’ll probably see in a few years those graphic setting sliders getting nudged down to high then medium to hold a steady 60fps.

Doesn't work that way.

PS4 focused on PC resolution of 1080p.

If PS5 focused on 1080p u are right, but they don't they focus on 4k. which stomps the gpu performance of that gpu in the PS5 hard mode.

Example. extremely biashed and favorable amd benchmark

Battlefield 5:
1080p:
1070 GTX = 86 fps
1060 GTX = 66 fps.

4 k:
5700 XT = 61 fps.

Current gen consoles have shit ARM CPUs, so the leap in CPUs will be much greater than in GPUs. That might lead to PC ports being CPU limited in early next gen games (as CPU heavy features will be explored more by devs).

Also, considering how the new consoles are targeting 4K, you can probably get away with an older GPU if you're sticking with a 1080p monitor, as many people already mentioned.

They have slowly raised the market perceived value of cards through several tactics, but a 2080ti chip costs to nvidia like $150.

Dx12 in combination with next gen will kill Pascal quickly.

I find it funny how console warriors are claiming that upcoming consoles will have specs comparable to RTX 2080 ti, when history shows that every console iteration, falls flat on its face in terms of resolution, frame rate, performance, etc. Every year we hear that consoles will be beating PC, and every year it's always the same thing, time after time. and I'm not heading on consoles, in fact I want them to be as powerful as possible, so that they don't hold back PC games again this generation. Look at Crysis 1 compared to each iteration after the original. It became a corridor shooter versus an open-world game. Just don't get your hopes up too much, console guys.

Back in topic a gtx 1070 will last several years. A rtx 2060 is a better buy if you can get them similar price.

I had a GTX750 at the start of this gen, which is more or less PS4 level, and i could run some current gen games at 60fps that were 30fps on XB1/PS4. The fabled 'console optimization' is overstated. Although PC optimization has been pretty crappy the last couple years, but we are at the point in this gen where most people have a good enough rig to brute force current gen games so devs dont put the same optimization into PC games at this point.
And yeah, if the consoles have more 'real world' power than a 1080ti, i'll be surprised, nevermind a 2080 or 2080ti lol.

Exactly. And the biggest reason of doubt will go to the power usage. Can you imagine running a desktop class processor and GPU, that will rival a RTX 2080, with a power envelope of around 200ish watts, in TOTAL?! The industry didn't suddenly give birth to the most efficient silicone chips over night, on an architecture so futuristically advance. But console warriors will fight about rumor after rumor. It's gonna be funny when digital foundry ends all the hype for next gen consoles, and starts dropping the frame and resolution analysis videos for next gen performance.

You will need at least a 20xx series board for this new generation coming. The 10xx series is just too underpowered.
Underpowered? But still more powerful than Xbox series X and PS5... I don't get how that makes sense? Especially pairing a moderate cpu, and it'll walk all over next gen consoles. How much performance can you squeeze out of a small form factor with only ~200watts of power? Console enthusiasts are gonna be so let down this generation with expectations like this.
I wouldn’t say that about the entire pascal series... 1080 Ti has more power and vram
My thoughts exactly.

Wait for an year. You will probably need a card with ray tracing. For now it is fine for 1440p 60fps gaming.

Graphically games have stopped doing much, invest in high end processor and Ssd storage for now.

No. It's only just ahead of the Xbox one X. That is 6tf and 1070 is 6.5.

If you play at 1080 then you might get some use out it. For next gen minimum of a 2070 is needed.

Also LOL at those saying that next gen consoles will be as powerful as a 2080 ti

Er you realize a 1070 is more powerful than all the consoles right?, including the OneX.
You can't play Shadow of the Tomb Raider or RDR2 or Metro Exodus (I think) on ultra at 1080p with 1070 even without RTX shenanigans. (I have to justify myself updating from 1070 to 2070S)

You can't play RDR2 on Ultra with 1080p/60 stable on any GPU on the market right now.

Of course it will, with some compromises on visuals.

There are many GPUs sold today that are MUCH slower than 1070.

"High Quality"
What quality settings are consoles at, while dipping to 22fps? Please tell me that. They definitely aren't at high or medium for the most part. And can't even pull 30fps consistently. Do you think the upcoming consoles will be more powerful than a 2080 ti? More or less a 2080, 2070, or even more or less trading blows with a 2060, if even?! Serious question.

Game runs fine on most mid-high end GPUs on these settings (some X1X settings are lower than low so you can't have that on PC). But on ultra settings RDR2 just murders GPUs right now, that's why I said no GPU on the market is running it 1080/fully stable 60 fps (maybe oced 2080ti?).

Based on the rumors XSX GPU will be around 2070S-2080 level of power.

Most benchmarks use high quality as focus because that's where most people play there games on because ultra is there to murder performance. For example a 5700xt doesn't even hit a stable 30 fps at 1080p ultra and sits at 11 fps at 4k ultra. Ultra is mostly added in games to basically up the visual quality for future purposes when tech moves forwards so the game stays relevant. There are tons of games where even a 2080ti will have issue's with.

The performance of consoles is all about the pixels they are going to push.

If they focus on 1080p, its probably a 2070/2070 super/2080/1080ti at best
If they focus on 1440p, its probably a 1080/2060 at best
If they focus on 4k, its probably a 1060/1650 super at best
If they focus on 8k, it pretty much equals PS4 base gpu 270 radeon or 950 gtx at best
Now if you add raytracing towards the mix performance of consoles will drop even lower.

And that's without CPU bottleneck.

Honestly they should have just focus on 1080p resolution and blow current gen games out of the water with massive visual quality jump. This 4k chase is stupid as hell.

It depends on your standards. If all you want is to game at 30fps and medium/console settings it will last. If you want to get the best experience at higher frame rates and better graphics you will need to wait for the new cards to arrive and get the next 70 series GPU.

I think you are thinking about 4k, everything maxed out. I have the game dude, i run everything at Ultra and some settings at high, at 3440x1440 resolution at 100+ fps with a 2080 ti. Wherever you are getting this weird idea that pc can't play it at 1080p 60fps is ludicrously outright wrong, especially as i showed you the benchmarks previously for 1080p, so please verify why you are getting resolutions wrong.

And by the way, those settings are low and medium and the Xbox 1x can't even keep a 30fps. What makes you think this Target framerate won't be 60 fps, and 2k resolution Target. Remember how current gen was supposed to handle 4k at 60fps :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:? It struggled to do 1080p 30fps in some games, so don't expect it to suddenly leapfrog pc or even keep up with it in comparisons.

Gamegpu.ru tested game with everything crancked up to the max (I'm not sure about MSAA), that's the true "ultra" settings.

4K Ultra

About NG: I think plenty of cross gen games will be 60fps on PS5/XSX just because those titles will be designed with Jaguar in mind and developers will have ton of spare cpu cycles (or at least variable 40 fps+ with VRR), unless they slam some heavy RT in them. But for true next gen games 30 fps will be the target for sure, as always. Minimum requierements for CPUs will skyrocket.

For some reason only dx12 benchmarks are posted, and everyone runs vulkan api, not dx12. And this was taken in November before patches and driver updates. But "there's no gpu on the market that can play it maxed out, even with settings that consoles can't even replicate, at 60fps 1080p" is complete utter b.s.

You said 1080p 60fps, now you are saying 4k. Keep moving the fucking goal posts lol. You do realize with everything on high settings, it still looks better than anything console can do, at quadruple the framerate. Many settings that the console cannot replicate. There is no comparison.

Every site tests in different places. Place where GG tested runs worse than place B3D used.

You said that I mixed 1080p and 4K benchmarks so I posted how game runs in 4K for comparison. I never compred console version to PC version, just pointed out that with everything maxed game runs barely around 60 fps even on best GPUs on the market.

According to your site, Xbox one x can only run 13fps to 17fps. @1080p!!! And that would be with one of the best processors possible, so subtract that framerate by a huge margin because of the crappy Jaguar cpu the xbx and ps4pro have. Think about that for a second

Have a Vega 56 and it is already not enough for 1440p/60 at max details in newer games. As soon as the new gen arrives, I really must go back to 1080p for max details or lower my expectations. So I really think, after all those years the GTX1070 is on the market it will finally be outdated at the end of the year. But it all depends on how far you can go down with the details.
