Theory: Why The PlayStation 5 Is So Large

Sweet, must have missed that. Won;t need one for a while anyway, but I'll prefer not having to replace the original

It was really quick on the render. Next week when the YouTubers show it off, we may get a better look.

Third-party NVME SSDs won't have the same number of channels and priority levels as the PS5's internal SSD and therefore won't have to have a capacity that's proportional to 825GB. They simply need to be faster than the PS5's internal SSD in order to compensate for their lower number of channels and priority levels.
I think that remains to be seen.

LOL

You don't need coolers on NVMe drives and the GPU frequency has nothing to do with the HD. Nice post, -10 Slytherin.

It's large for the same reason the Series X is large, keep it cool and quiet.

Ask me about my Stream Deck
I dont know what you're smoking thinking the PS5 and XSX are the same volume.

If by volume you're talking about the amount of space they occupy theres a pic floating around here that shows the SeX is 6.something liters and the PS5 is something like 11 liters.

If by volume you're talking about noise history shows the PS5 will probably be loud as fuck and XSX should be whisper quiet.
PS5 is 390mm × 104mm × 260mm*** 10,545.6cm

XSX is 301mm x 151mm x 151mm 6,863.1cm

Only way to know for sure is to use the Archimedes method on the retail release consoles.

Everyone should get in the bath and fill it all way with water. Plug in and turn on your XSX or PS5 and then drop it in your bath. Leave a note for first responders to measure the water displaced and tell them to report back here.

No, they know what size expandable storage they’ll allow. They set the spec, they’ve already said you’ll have to buy one that fits in there and has the right speed.

It is big because it is a PC with a Alienware like computer case.

They also made it heavy so that people can't throw it around.

The PS5 is so heavy that it will be sold in furniture stores, because they have the capabilities of delivering them.

Interesting to see some of u don't even realize that this is a thing. These things need to be kid proof no matter if you like it or not. They will have be build more robust because of it.

You're really still trying to push that, huh?

Oh right, I remember Cerny talking about it during the tech talk.

Cerny: One of the major complaints about our previous hardware was that it was too easy to throw. We developed a cutting edge technique to remedy the issue. By making the console as big as a horse we've reduced throwabilty by 87%.

So the ops theory is that the PS5 is so large to accommodate any NVME drive? Picture is a 1TB PCIE4 NVME drive from Seagate without a heatsink on it. The heatsink on my 570 board is't much wider and maybe 1/4" thick. These drives are tiny. The reason the PS5 is a behemoth is for either cooling or asthetics. My guess is cooling... Or they are smuggling Chinese immigrants in each one.

Thanks to you I've imagined that German Mediamarkt crowd from PS4 launch but now with forklifts drifting across isles to snatch their consoles. Oh wait, there's even a video of that!

I'd just like to point out the obvious that XSX is also based on the same RDNA2 so everything you're saying applies to it also.

And with that being the case people are right to be concerned because the MS solution is so much better here so what else is wrong with PS5s hardware design? Why is it seemingly so inferior comparison? At the end of the day why is it nearly twice as big and still 25% less powerful?

It's not 25% less powerful. Do you know include the dedicated hardware in the PS5 for decompression?

I wonder if there could ever be a reason for the PS5 to have a higher power supply rating than the XSX.

Nope, can't come up with a single reason.

This isn't so direct a translation to typical use power. Nintendo for example almost always doubles their power supply rated wattage over its operating wattage for a bevy of reasons (accounting for capacitor aging over a long time span, hitting peak efficiency points, just design paranoia about virus type loads etc). So it still depends on what percent actual max of each system hits out of the theoretical PSU peak.

The PS4 Pro was rated at 310W but used 145

Not saying I think the PS5 will have a lower wattage. Up in the air to me.

Since this thread is speculative.......I have a theory.

I remember many, many Sony fanboys predicting in the console speculation thread and reported "insiders" saying the GitHub leak was false and the PS5 had a DUAL GPU. Nevermind the efficiency, thermals and cost issues about this setup. Running at freakish clockspeeds of course.

Many fanboys were saying this so maybe it's still true and that's why it's so freaking big? The needed space for the secret 2nd GPU? The size complaints will stop once Sony releases this secret info.

The PS5 is actually, secretly, a 20 TF monster, that is, at least during those moments when the variable GPU clockspeeds are at full throttle, 😉

To summarize, all PS5s are also PS5 Pros that can, up to Sony when to release it, be updated, for a small fee of course, to the PS5 Pro with a minor software update. Kind of like Tesla does for their cars.

Why havent sony done a console break down yet ?

What they hiding in that burg al playstation !!!
I highly doubt they'll do one. I also highly doubt they're even going to send out review/preview units before release. They know they've been beaten on hardware in both terms of power and design. They know that third party games are going to look and run better on the competition in every way other than loading times. They have a massive fanbase that is going to buy the console already, so why bother giving the media ammo to use to give a negative impression? It just makes no sense.

Sony don't need to let people do breakdowns or analysis of their games to sell the console. The only thing that can do is harm them. Much like how demos for games died because all the research showed that it does more harm than good for game sales. Sony will sell every PS5 they can make without a breakdown etc, so why would they do one?

One can go on and on about the size of the console. The Series X is just as large. It's not the same height as PS5 and it makes up for that in terms of overall volume.

Both are much more powerful than their predecessors and that means better cooling is needed so the overall dimensions will get bigger.

Anyone expecting these consoles to be PS4 size is kidding themselves. Expect future revisions of both to be the same size and next next gen consoles to be even larger. They may even be mini PC boxes.
No lol...

The PlayStation 5 is 644 in3, the Series X is 418 in3. The PS5 is 54% larger than the Series X, you have no idea what you're talking about.

There no theory it just a bad design look at the Series S which is more powerful than both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and look how small and compact it is and the the Series X is more powerful yet is smaller in volume than PS5 you guys just really need to call it how you see it instead of coming up with ludacris theory.
