60fps or higher is why I mainly PC game. You should see Dragon Quest XI at 4K 70-90fps

Depends on the game.

Turn-based RPGs, action-adventure (zelda, souls games), survival horror, don't really require it. Solid 30fps is fine.

Racers, fighters, most first person games, greatly benefit from it.

As a general rule, if I had to pick one, yeah 60 is usually very nice.

As a rule, I always go with the higher frame rate. But you are right, it does depend on the game as not all games benefit from 60fps. I can't imagine 60fps doing anything for a game like Persona.

Given the choice 60FPS every time, I need game to feel good play over looking shiny. That being said I'm not all oversensitive to say 30FPS is "unplayable" even with frame pacing issue I enjoyed the crap out of Bloodborne and currently obsessively playing MHRise.

After playing so much on my new high end PC, i just feel bothered by 30fps, even when its playable it just feels wasted potential not to go for at least 60fps at this point. I would say 60fps should become the standard now.

If the only difference is resolution then I would go with 60FPS. But if the 30FPs mode adds a lot of graphical features like RT then I might consider it.

I mean I average about 30 faps per second when I look at porn. Anything higher than that Id damage my wiener.

Seriously though. It depends on the game.

One should keep in mind that it’s not just graphics but with 30 fps the developer can also do twice as much with AI or crowds or physics or what have you.

That said, I would almost always choose 60fps.

Necessity is the mother of all invention.

If you target 60 as a foundation, you will push for more clever solutions to reach fidelity. Go with 30, you will be less disciplined than you could be.

60 needs to be the target this gen. The cpu imbalance off last gen for draw calls is no longer a factor.

This echoes my thoughts exactly. 60 should be the bare minimum and the rest will follow. The extra details and resolution gained by 30 fps is obscured by sample and hold blur any ways when you move around.

So far the difference in resolution or detail has been negligible in the case of Demons Souls or Miles, so I went with 60 FPS

Ratchet will be an interesting test

60fps, or higher.

30fps might work if the game is super slow, like turn based.

Action games, racing games, anything that needs distinct action and have faster motions feels sluggish and look blurry at 30fps. Even BOTW, which I love, feels unresponsive and looks unpolished because of the low fps.

i don't like either of those options.
I prefer the dev locking their preferred settings and that's it.
If resolution or framerate are too low for the game, well shit, it's not my fault anymore, that's one it's on the dev.

Can we agree that options are good?

60FPS is ideal but also a game with locked 30FPS with amazing graphics is!

It does not matter to me. I think most games will have both gfx and fidelity option but I am not sure 4K is worth it and devs probably don't care as well. RE: Village was using CB4K and it looked just fine. Other games are using DSR and other techniques like temporal injection etc ..

60fps though definitely has advantages, so FPS, racing sims, fighting games etc ... I think everyone prefers 60fps. VR games as well.

The only reason we keep having this conversation is that the display industry was disperate to find a way to keep selling beyond the necessities of most people. So they just had to push resolution to unnecessary levels that, predictably, most people don’t even use, need, notice, nor asked for. Yet somehow, a very vocal minority will apparently have a stroke or something if every single pixel of their precious 1440p+ panel isn’t put to good use, so here we are. If not for the untimely push for resolution, we wouldn’t have to choose anymore.

And since OLED performs like an actual slideshow with anything below 60fps (and even 60fps manages to look somewhat choppy on OLED, just play an old 2D game on it and see for yourself), I can only vote for 60fps here. Fuck your pixels.

I don’t think people realise how much 60fps actually does to the perceptIon of graphics too. 60fps actually helps games look better in motion, or you could say 30fps hinders the overall look of the game when you are playing it. yes a single frame will look better but I’m not playing screenshots.

plus OLEDs literally look terrible at 30fps so with more people adopting that technology for gaming I hope developers avoid the slideshow.

Even chez moves are smoother at 60.

Did you mean chess by any chance?

No shit but who cares?

Does 60fps feel much smoother and responsive? Of course.
Do I prefer 60fps over 30fps all other things being equal? Of course.
Do I want to sacrifice half of the GPUs render time to process geometry, shading and effects at the expense of increased framerate in EVERY game? No.

This generation we seem to have options for both, which is great, so we don't have to have the endless, insufferable bitching when every game is released.
