beat the game today.

So good, Ending was crazy. Intense ass hell man. Platinum games did again for me in this game. I enjoyed every game they released. This is hands down up there on my top 10 favorite game of forever.

Thank you platinum games.

I received the game today, and wow, it's really awesome and intense.
Reload cancelling blows my mind, it makes me think of that trick to reload really fast in MGS/MGS2 by rapidly de-equip/re-equip your gun. Are there any other undocumented tricks like this ?

I only discovered boost-rolling the other day.

I mean, I beat the game on hard and I'm still learning how to use the controls properly, feels like I'm still just starting out.

This is a good thing.

There's loads of stuff like this, in fact one of the most satisfying things in the game is finding some of these things for yourself. Off the top of my head, things like this that you might not know about:

- You can reload whilst rolling.
- You can throw a grenade and then activate AR and shoot it in mid-air. This literally makes you feel like a BAWSE.
- You can also shoot enemy grenades and rockets in the same way. With the Romanov's that fire Rocket's, this is a great tactic to use.
- Lighting a cigarette whilst in cover will distract the enemies and make them come towards you. Useful to manuever them to certain favourable positions.
- If you have the Machine Gun equipped, you can perform the melee attack (somersault, then activate AR in mid-air). HMG melee attack + AR Shotgun blasts whilst in mid-air feels amazing.
- The disk cutter's melee attack does ridiculous melee damage. Against the "Unknown" enemy type (the weird spider type thing), once you reveal the inner section, you can kill it in seconds with the disk cutter melee attack.
- You can boost whilst rolling.
- The Rocket Launcher will lock-on if you keep an enemy in your sights for long enough.
- You can shorten the time of a reload by changing weapon as you reloading, then reloading back.

There's lots more too.

Another question: In God Hard, the slow motion time is pretty short. Is there any way or point in which it gets a little bit longer (aside from the last boss fight)?

Received this game in the mail today in the morning, now its night and I just finished the game. Couldn't get myself to put the freaking controller down (well aside from lunch breaks), what an amazing adrenaline rush.

Shinji Mikami ruined beat em up style action games with God Hand for me (nothing else compares) and now he seems to have done the same with shooters, this man and his team are brilliant.

You mean rolling with X/A while boosting in order to save energy ?

I believe its called Boost Cancelling.

What it does is it takes the invincibility of the start up of the boost and combines it with the invincibility of a roll. So you get a fast dash with lots of invincibility frames and zero cost to the AR meter.

There isn't.

You said that this is only your second playthrough. I think you should put off God Hard until you've beaten the game a few more times.

I think he'll be fine if he could get through the first area, I only beat the game twice, hard and GH.

I arrived at the final boss, and damn it's hard. Also, I discovered the jumping trick only in the act 5, it's so much more effective to activate the bullet time than rolling then aiming.

Only 5 hours long game, but the replay value looks great.

Are there any tips for someone new to the game? I saw some listed on this page. How do you know what you can shoot out of the air? I tried shooting whatever the Romanov was shooting at me when I was in AR mode but nothing happened.

Found this goldmine on another forum while googling for the game.

"WTF AM THIS, I GET THIS SHIT ALONG CASTLEVANIA BECAUSE GAFERS HYPED ETC, AND I GOT FUCK OWNED WTF AM THIS PIERCE OF SHIT, THE GAMEPLAY IS A FUCK MESS, WTF CONTROLS MANY FUNCTIONS, ENEMIES ALL FUCK RED SOLDIERS WTF, WTF AM THIS DASH, GAME AM TOO FAST WTF I CANT PLAY MORE THAN 20 MINUTES..... WTF NO SENSE TOTAL THE WEAPONS DONT RELOAD HAHA WTF I AM WITH NO WEAPONS AHHAA CAM IS TOTAL LOST, WTF WORST GAME I PLAYED IN 360"

Some people needs to be educated, when you play it as your regular TPS shooter (cover -> shoot -> move to next cover -> shoot -> repeat) it can be a frustrating experience.

I think that's the thing why Vanquish is so awesome, externally it's like another cover TPS at it's core it's something way more advanced, is basically what all other TPS could only wish right now and won't be on a long time.

You can basically shoot every enemy missile, the trick was referring (I asume) to the big missile the romanov fire from his back, you can clearly see it how he prepares it before launching it (it also does a very characteristic sound when it flies towards you), hit it while the missile getting out (that sounds dirty) and while do heavy damage.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I just started playing this game on Sunday, about halfway through Act 2 now... I'm loving it, Mikami pretty much took a massive steaming dump on every other 3rd person cover based action... only complaints so far is that I would have preferred a life meter (I hate red shit getting in the way when you are dying), and the dialogue is really bland military dudebro "alpha bravo squad fall back, we got enemy tangoes on our left!"... especially after games like GOD HAND with their campy appeal and dialogue.

So, why wasn't this game more of a hit? Too complicated and too much going on for the average gamer? Not enough advertising?

No multiplayer, little marketing, limited appeal, came out during a crowded release window.

- Make sure to use the melee attack for the heavy machine for bullet time purposes, do it with no enemies closeby and Sam will do a flip, if you shoot during this time holdings L1 you will go into bullet time. Great for getting enemies on higher or lower ground. Also good for hiding behind a container or whatever (stand behind it, flip and shoot some enemies in slo mo and fall back behind cover).

- Learn boost cancelling, really helpful. Boost and then immediately cancel into a roll, you get fast movement with lots of invincibility. You can dance in enemy faces with this.

- The Disk Launcher is kind of a crap weapon but its great for melee because unlike other weapons it uses ammo for it, not the AR guage. In other words, you can melee all you want without your suit overheating (as long as you have ammo).

- You can use cigarettes to distract enemies.

I actually really liked not having to worry about HP.

I just bought Vanquish off 360 Games on Demand, its 19.99 on there now, dunno when they dropped the price, I remember it being 30 or 40 not too long ago. It's also available on Amazon for like 10 bucks for PS3 and 15 for 360. Easily worth it.

Awesome game, but I like almost everything Platinum puts out. Only thing I'm not a big fan of is the style of the story, I prefer the crazier things they tend to do like Bayonetta, or Clover games.

I like the story and i am glad it isnt "Suda 51" crazy....sometimes that type of "crazy' doesn't even make sense to the point that it isn't entertaining.

Also, welcome to the party.............although late!

Thanks! I've been wanting to play it for forever but never got around to it til now.

I do like the designs of the robot enemies and the suit itself. And I enjoy when it doesn't take itself too seriously, like a bit near the very beginning when you rescue some guys who are trapped and being electrocuted and they talk about how nice it felt. It's just the whole future-military thing feels so overdone and normal, especially when compared to past Platinum/Mikami/Clover games.

But either way, I'm still really digging the game. The gameplay is definitely king when it comes to Vanquish and it hasn't disappointed so far.

Not that it helps but your actual suit shows your health
Green(Good) -> Yellow -> Red(Danger)

What's the consensus on the weapon DLC pack? Is it worth it? Is it something that makes a big difference, worth getting early on, or maybe later after I'm used to the default weapons or doing a 2nd playthrough?

Edit: Also its 160 points but I'd have to buy 400 points to get it, unless there's some way to get less points?

I'd only use those weapons on a second (and harder) playthrough. They're sorta overpowered, IMO.

man, i really want a vanquish 2 in the next 3 years. somebody should make it happen.

Sadly with Mikami now gone from Platinum I don't think we will see a sequel for this game...to be honest I'd trust only Kamiya for this and from what I've seen from some of his tweets he's not very interested on such a project. :(

And I wouldn't want Kamiya to be interested, only Mikami could make something like this.

Just like God Hand though, I'd love a sequel but on the other hand the gameplay in both Vanquish and God hand is so refined you'd think it was a 2nd or 3rd installment in the series. As such I'm not too disappointed that there won't be a sequel, I can replay these for years to come.

Overpowered? Bought. I've been holding off on another playthrough for months, because of the scars. So I'll take whatever help I can get.

The DLC weapons are worth it for anti armor pistol alone

boost machine gun is pretty fun too

Sad to think there won't be a sequel to this game but I'll definitely follow any project Mikami does next with intrest.

Slightly OT but I picked up Bayonetta for £10 last weekend. Got some games to finsh before hand but I'm looking forward to playing it.

To be fair, this was my first reaction to playing the game aswell. You just cannot comprehend the awesome at first.

You can use them on the Tactical Challenges as well? TC 4 and 6 for me and platinum is at hand.

I played it awhile back. It was slightly more maddening then I hoped but, I powered through it. It so weird that you couldn't roll at an angle.

Very LTTP but I managed to get a copy of this game when there was a deal for it at Best Buy for super cheap. I just finished it last night on normal difficulty and I really liked it. Game is pretty damn awesome!

Super hectic gameplay, it's like Gears or other third person shooters on speed. So cool to slide around on the ground to cover and the use of slo-mo is great once I got the hang of it. Graphics were really nice, framerate was also pretty solid (PS3).

Even though it's 30fps the game felt very, very responsive. Controls were great too once I found my sweet spot (I raised all the sensitivities to 55 from the default 50).

The story was nothing to write home about but the important thing is that the gameplay is so good. Some good incentive for replays also to better my times. I think my final game time was 7 hours and change.

Overall I really, really enjoyed it. Definitely has enough to differentiate itself from other third person shooters on the market and I'd love to see a second game in this series.

Play through on Hard/God Hard/Challenges (or at the very least give an earnest go) before making big judgements. The mechanics really shine in the higher difficulties.
