Famitsu: Wii U region-lock confirmed

Makes me remember when smash bros was delayed and just couldn't wait and went all freeloader and jp version. If time hasn't done its work, no possibilities to get next smash early if another delay happens will force patience on me.

Hilarious and embarrassing reactions in this topic. This isn't even news, it's like me telling you a 3D Mario game will come out for the Wii U. Nintendo would never have a region free home console.

Trolls are just using this as an excuse to have a go at Nintendo. Most of these people having their nerd rages won't even have planned on buying a Wii U anyway. As if someone would hold out on buying a console on the basis of it being region free or not.

How is it so difficult to understand why people get upset by region locking?
You're only making yourself look ridiculous from on top of that high horse of yours.

Sony can be commended for giving us complete region freedom since forever, but Nintendo can't be criticized for locking their systems down? Get out of here.

He's not saying they can't. He's saying the meltdowns are hilarious.

Two very different things!

Irrelevant. PS3 did more for region free in one gen than Nintendo did in 28 years, not mentioning you can unlock PS1 and PS2 because there were no online updates cockblocking your freeloaders.

what are trying to say? ps/ ps2 regionlocked acceptable because there are ways now to go around? regionlocked blurays okay because of whatever? probably no used games, no backward compability , no regionfree on ps4 acceptable because of whatever? sorry, but you sound like a hyppocrite.

psone region locked happened in the late nintys. ps2 regionlocked happened 200x. regionlocked blurays are happening right now... how old are you?

ps: thank you plufim

This is 2012. We aren't in the boondocks of print media and video game rentals anymore. For all of my personal marvels for Nintendo they love to hold back and drag that shovel through the mud.

You're really going off the deep end here. You're basing your arguments on consoles that haven't even been formally announced yet.
And AFAIK region locking of Blu-Rays is decided by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, of which Sony is only a part of, one of many.

Regionlocked Blu-Ray movies has nothing to do with Sony. It was necessary to actually get support. Nintendo doesn't have that problem due to not having a standard disc-format.

This wasn't a problem for the Wii, I imagine in a years time people will be able to make their Wii U region free. But I don't get the reaction, the original Wii was locked. And the writing was on the wall with the 3DS.

EvilMario

Will QA for food.
Company that region locks previous console (Wii), and previous 2 handhelds (DSi and 3DS) region locks new console. As others have said, disappointing but unsurprising news.

Crack one, you crack them all!
Fuck region locking.

Disappointing but expected.

Hopefully a workaround is found within the next few years, for both WiiU and 3DS :/

Maturity, bitches.
rip them a new one. they deserve it.

nintendo already showed us their hitler side with the 3DS, so this was to be expected. very sad for gamers with broad taste.

Okay, I might have been mistaken with the "forever" part, apologies. I didn't know the PS2 was region locked.
Doesn't really matter in this case though seeing as the PSV and the PS3 have been region free and I simply have come to expect this kind of approach from my future console purchases.
I don't have any doubts on the PS4 being region free as well, but i'm not going to state like that's in any way confirmed, it would be equally upsetting if Sony messed that up.

We could just keep arguing semantics back and forth though, that's always fun.

Can someone tell me what's Nintendo reasoning for region lock?

Usually it's nothing more than a licensing situation. Most of it comes down to trying to gain as much money as possible in a certain market without getting burnt.

But eh, modchips are legal in Australia so Nintendo can't do a single thing if they ever come out for the Wii U. I wouldn't need to go about in a ridiculous manner if they didn't place the restrictions in the first place.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
1. almost every console is rushed. xbox360 hddvd support, ps3 sixaxis and having shitty chip infrastructure.

2. almost every console didnt have a clear direction. ps from rumble pak is something from the past to move. or did you see kinect coming?

you mean not allowing sd cards, hdds or having region-locked blurays?
sorry.

"when everything is internal" is for many not enough. with more and more upcoming download-games and ps probably finally going completly hd
seven years after they promised it
a internal hdd will be just useless and expensive.

and region free is already dying on home-consoles. region locked blurays and psn account are smiling at you.

you know the rumors regarding ps4? no used games, no backward compability and so on? or they memory solution on ps vita? let us go for don´t expect too much.

and now, lets go back to the topic. was anyone surprised by these news?

because of region lock? so i´m also not buying blurays or dlcs on ps3 and x360?

dude, i have the feeling you are not buying that much next gen

umds wont to have a word with you ;)

so you boycot all nintendo consoles except snes, ps/ps2 and bluray on ps3, many x360 games? have fun then

neogaf meltdowns. always delivering. wonder what will happen if ps4 won´t support regionfree(ps/ps2 and bluray on ps3 already doing this) and wont run used games and ps/2/3 games.

what are trying to say? ps/ ps2 regionlocked acceptable because there are ways now to go around? regionlocked blurays okay because of whatever? probably no used games, no backward compability , no regionfree on ps4 acceptable because of whatever? sorry, but you sound like a hyppocrite.

sounds like a future excuse for ps4 games ;P

Well they do say the best defence is a good offence.

But we're not in those eras anymore are we? Regionlocked bluray movies have nothing to do with this at all, they're movies. But since you always bring this in the discussion: here's a list of region free bluray movies.

we are not in these eras anymore? its like many x360 games never existed.its like many blurays will never exist. so how short is this era?

Well they do say the best defence is a good offence.

i have a stalker. vowzers.now how did he contribute towards this thread?

You were talking about late 90s and ps2 generation, we're not in those eras anymore. The guy you replied to said we can commend Sony on making efforts for region free gaming. Why do you bring up 360?

It sux but no surprise. Didnt Nintendo threaten CEX and others into making them stop selling imported games?

I miss being able to go to a store to pick up imports!!

Straw man much?
It seems incredible to me that you'd be more pissed off by people's reactions to this than by the console being locked. Nice priorities.

As for the bolded part, I have and will continue to.

I'm actually starting to wonder if the people posting these "Hitler and Nintendo are cunts" comments and other such things would would even be interested in getting the system if it was region free at this point.
Seems like every any excuse these days is good enough to light up the torch and ready the pitchforks. :-/

What?! o_O

Region-lock isn't the problem, not releasing games in certain territories is.
Exactly.

Sony actually got Lik-Sang shut down if that's what you're thinking of.
Not to mention how they threatened lots of other shops into stopping selling specific region games to certain regions.

I can deal with a region lock. I just buy an import system.
But when they try to make it a crime to buy these systems and games, that's when I really get pissed off.

It is the natural order of things. Late in the console's life, new games that are worth playing will be few and far between. But homebrew, by that point, will have hopefully made bypass of region locking possible, so you can pick the best of the generation's J-exclusive games to bring over and fill the gap. Or something like that... unless the Wii U turns out to be as tough to hack as their recent portables.
